Harry Maguire | Signed

My post was intended as a joke.

As you mentioned, Blanc was past it when he joined United and pace is a much bigger part of the defensive game now than it was in the past.

The big thing with the Maguire deal (if it goes through) is the fee. If this was even 40m+20 add ons, the negativity was be substantially lower but with that fee and our current state, we will look more at his flaws than what he brings due to how poor our more recent big money signings have turned out.
I hear ya!

 I get it now. I feel slower than Maguire, but a little faster than Blanc.

Imagine, three years ago you told someone about this deal. People would think you were on drugs.

Well despite the click bait and ill informed straw clutching in the press this transfer rumour is purely that. Those saying Big H is not worth X or Y are so far off the mark it's untrue.

He has 4 years left on a 5 year contract,we dont want or have to sell and our Owner is a very clever and ruthless billionaire business man, when it comes to negotiating he will not be bullied.

Some pretty well informed ITKs have alluded to the fact that Harry, his agent Stretford a Man Utd fan apparently and both Manchester clubs are aware of the fee required -£85 mil and it comes with a strong pay up or no deal message.

As RedRonaldo stated it's market forces, we hold all the aces and will not budge and Harry will definitely not throw his toys out like Mahrez he's too much of a pro.

Apologies it was ClaytonBlackmoorLeftPeg who was talking sense re market forces.

Imagine being told you were going to pay £50m for Richarlison 3 years ago, you’d get sectioned.
Yeah, but the difference is one will prove to be worth every penny, the other is Harry Maguire. He's 26, he's not getting much better than this. This deal is nuts.

Maybe wait until he actually proves it before you speak too definitively, or you may be left with an egg on your face.

No, I mean thats what I would expect to pay a club that dont want to sell him. Like most players which clubs dont want to sell. I think he's worth £45 million or so but they'd want some extra

Its not about resale, we dont want to sell him we want him to be successful. But being successful at £80 million takes a lot of accomplishments and means you should have high expectations of the player. If we signed him he would have to transform the team

At £45-50 million he'd be a fairly expensive addition that improves us (though mainly going forward, and being more entertaining) a bit

Your argument obviously doesnt work out, because look at Mourinho.

He paid shit loads of money for players including some CBS, then when he asked for even more money for even more CBs he was declined. Because his players hadnt delivered.

If Ole goes and spends £80 million on Maguire, he's going to be expected to get around £80 million's worth out of the player. Else he'll be the next manager who doesnt get money to spend

This makes less than 0 sense. Do we have a God given right that other clubs will just give us their players at our valuations? Its obvious Leicester don't have to sell and they have ambitions that are not much lower than ours. So we should expect to pay whatever makes Leicester want the money more than the player. Which in this era of richer mid table clubs is a lot higher than it is for mid table clubs from other leagues.

Nathan Ake is so much better value and also covers for Shaw

Who cares about value? It's not our money for a start, and I would much rather we spend it on a player we need, rather than it go in the Glazer pockets. Second, value doesn't count for shit, when we are still lacking a commanding center-half that can play out from the back. Maguire is hardly Franco Baresi, but he is a million miles better than Smalling, Jones, Rojo and Bailly. And a much needed partner for Lindelof. The leadership he brings instantly improves us. Yes, he has his flaws, but he's the best defender available on the market for us. I couldn't give a shit how much we pay.

What's all these bollocks about Nathan 'better value for money' Ake? We've got enough £30m-£40m CBs as it is and look where it took us. If Maguire is at least one level above, which is what we need, then I don't care if he costs twice us much. Value for money doesn't improve our first team, quality does, so as long as we believe he's quality, let him play first.

Nathan Ake was mentioned here - He s 5ft11. His partner would be Lindelof whose weakest point is aerial ability - something does no add up here...

If Lindelof had pace, him and Maguire is as balanced as you could get. It's a good CB partnership, we will enjoy watching them.

Bournemouth concede a shtload as well, so i wonder if people have watched him much, or get caught up in hype.

That's because Bournemouth are pretty shit and play incredibly open. Ake is a good player, much better than Bournemouth.

Maybe not good enough for a top side but he could make the step up to a Europa League side like Man United.

I'm not even sorry.

For a good poster that's a disappointingly cheap wind-up.

The whole point is that Maguire isn't actually an 80m CB, but more a 40-60m one.

you say that now but if United did this and ended up finishing 7th due to defensive errors you'd be spitting feathers in May
I didn't do that when Utd finished 6th last season so I doubt 1 place will make that happen.
That's mental, Maguire has proven for club and country that he's a very good player. Tuanzebe wasn't even the best defender at Aston Villa last season. I like Tuanzebe but you're asking for trouble if you want to throw him in the deep end.
I'm not advocating making him the starter just he'd now 3rd or 4th choice.
If Tuanzebe was going to make it at United, he would have done so already.

He's been showing promise for a number of years now, but he hasn't been capable of making that final step-up.
The history of players making breakthroughs show that this is a ridiculous statement. He's not even 24 yet.
Some people prefered we didn’t buy Van Persie because it would stunt the progress of Danny Welbeck. How did that go?

If Tuanzebe is meant to make it here, he will have opportunities and take them.
I was fine with RVP over Welbeck so not the same thing for me. Also, this isn't me wanting not to block his path. I just really don't rate Maguire as that much of an improvement over taking a chance with Tuanzebe. Just a massive waste of money to get him. This is assuming he's the only CB left we want/can get then I'd say no to it.

Pace is my massive concern, especially if we intend to press high up the pitch as our first preseason game seemed to suggest. Koulibaly would have been my preferred choice.

The old "If he was from X he'd be rated" line never gets old.
Neither does underrating players because they dont look a certain way or fit a certain idea of what we should be after . Who's the flavour of the month this month ? To be honest I would really like him here but I would also like axel to get a chance this year so I hope him coming doesn't mean axel going on loan
