Every time he starts a game where we're expected to be on the front foot it's a struggle. He'll look decent when we're doing backs to the walls defending but on the flip side he's one of the reason we're doing so much defending in the first place.

He's just not good enough. One year extension maximum if we want to focus on other positions, but he should be gone this summer or next.

Well since we’re already (most likely) letting go of both Lindelof and Evans, it makes sense to trigger Maguires option for another year even if it’s just as a squad option. Buying 2-3 new CBs on top of our other needs is a close to impossible task, so it would be poor squad planning to release him (in my opinion).

Both I think are fair to say are quite debatable at this point. We might as well bring in another veteran or promote somebody from the youth team. All this would make sense if we really would compete in multiple comps but we aren't. Therefor, the little bit of financial sense goes mostly out of the window. That isn't undervalueing him, I know he can be of use, but we have to look into the future and that means a strong and competitive first eleven has to be first priority at all costs. So as soon as he wants to be paid more than we are ready to pay our 4/5/6th choice CB, he should be gone.

We have to accept where we are. We have to accept that some of the things that made sense with SAF and when we were fighting for CL and PL don't make sense anymore. At least not for the time being. We are admitting that playing thursday and sunday every week is surely a factor for Amorim not being able to really imprint his ideas to the players as everything is about regeneration. Yet some fans are clamouring to be in as many comps as possible. Maybe it is exactly what we need - a season where we can play like a Leicester or an Aston Villa, having a full week of regeneration and training to finally achieve something. What we are doing since years is fixing the bike while riding it in a race at the same time. And we end up achieving nothing, neither fixing it, nor winning the race.

So much complaining about the recruitment but as soon as somebody is supposed to leave, it only needs a few decent games or (as with McTominay) a few good scenes and fans are losing memory. We have to break that pattern.

Maguire is 32 on March. He's on 190k a week, his contract ends this year and we can trigger a one year extension. That leaves a 6 months (Jan till June) or 18 months ie around 15m in salary if we go to the max. A 2+1 will give him 5m till June then 5m per year for 2 years and an option for 5m taking it to the total of 20m. Considering that he'll be 35 then I doubt that we'll ever trigger that extension which puts him back to 15m. Some argue that Evans is better then Maguire and he's on 3.66m per year.

So ask yourself why on earth should Maguire would lose a potential huge signing on fee so he get approximately the same amount of money he'll get if United should trigger the contract extension? Why should United keep Maguire till age 34- 35 when he struggled with us even in his prime?

I'd really like to replace him with someone ten years younger. If the goal is to compete for the league in 2/3 years, which it should be, there's just no point in keeping Maguire around imo. That's not to discredit the point you make about cost effectiveness, but I don't think it actually is cost effective in the long run.

We need to rebuild our entire centre back options around players who aren't painfully slow.

We're really hampering ourselves having such poor athleticism in the team, but centre back is a particular problem area.
