Oh, for feck's sake! There was only one CB who was excellent in that game today, and his name, unfortunately, was VVD.

Maguire's positional awareness is usually horrible. Maguire is a low-IQ defender who is all physicality, zero brains. He compensates some of his shortcomings with desire, work ethic and effort, but calling him "excellent" is offensive to the defenders who are actually excellent.
And where was VVD for Amad goal?

Great game. He’s shown unbelievable resilience. Don’t blame him for the chance at the end, Zirkzee should have gone for goal or else passed it properly along the floor. Was possibly offside anyway.
He’s a real asset in the air defensively. Decent on the ball too.

And where was VVD for Amad goal?
Amad, who is a genius, nutmegged Robertson, VVD had no time to react or do much about it.

Are you seriously comparing current-form VVD, who is probably the best CB in the world, to Maguire?!

I think he's implying that you're being a bit harsh with your analysis of Maguire by saying he wasn't great because he possibly could have stopped a goal. VVD was marking thin air for Amad's goal.

Both were great today imo

He's doing well and probably been our best defender in the last few games.
Let's not go overboard, we've conceded at least 2 in the last 4 games, him and other defenders need to improve as a unit. We still concede too many chances.

I didn’t. You did
Not really :) Just objecting to using an adjective like "excellent" in regards with somebody like Maguire. It may have been an excellent performance for his usual level, but there is not a top 6 team that would want him and he really shouldn't be starting for us, if our goal was excellence, in my opinion

I admit that blaming Maguire for that goal was too harsh. I edited the comment

I didn't know we signed a new centre back. Brillaint game from Harry, was solid against players 100 times faster than him. Used his body and mind very well.

Then why did we just extend his contract for another year at 190k a week, which makes him the 5th highest paid CB in the Premier League? Genuine question, I don't really get it. Seems like an overpay to me.

Because he is on current form the best central defender we have at the club, dominant in the air where we have lots of issues. And it is relatively cheap to simply extend his contract for another year so we can focus the funds in to areas that have much more pressing need of reinforcements (LWB, RWB, striker, CAM, CM backup, keeper backup...). Wage wise we will save much more with offloading Rashford and Casemiro wages than reducing Maguire's wage for a few 10k per week.

You said it there yourself 'the meme years'. You allowed yourself to be influenced by such nonsense when some of us were saying how overblown it was. Lindelof was never at any point a better player than Maguire it was laughable.

Maguire was always the better defender but what is the point of being the better defender if you gift the opponent a chance every match? That was what Maguire was doing at the time. Those meme compilations werent made because he played well, they were actual clips of his ridiculous moments on the pitch. Sometimes moments that were included werent actually that bad. but as part of the 'meme' were included Still i wouldnt call it overblown. He was terrible at the time.

It is impressive he came back from that and now he is clearly a better option than Lindelof but please dont pretend as if Maguire wasnt horrid at the time.

1st choice CCB for me, he's slow as feck but otherwise a dependable player. Personally think he is competing with De Ligt for that spot (which is actually an excellent situation to be in, given Maguire very likely leaves in summer 26 and De Ligt is a great age for a CB).

Yes. New Glory is right.

This guy was ridiculed by people who don't even watch the PL. He was booed by his own fans at both club and international level. For him to come back from all of this and become our 1st choice CB again is to be admired.

Just rewatched that tackle on Salah - it was beautiful , fecking Oliver is such a bad referee.

He’s been good for the last 18 months - seriously don’t get why every time he has yet another good game people act so surprised.
Agree, he had a rocky start but has been pretty consistent since.

Well if we really wanted him we would have done more than extend his contact. We are losing multiple other CB's, so we need more. Extending his contract by 1 year is cheaper than buying a new one.

This is what is bothering me as well. We look better defensively at times, especially on an individual level, but we still concede so many goals and chances.

I know this will sound crazy,, but the correct thing to do was for Maguire not to shoot, rather, leave the ball for Garnacho. Maguire already had 2 players and a goalkeeper covering the goal by the time the ball got to him. Garnacho would've had more from the goal to aim, and there would've not been any ball bounce by the time the ball gets to him.

He would have needed eyes in his back in order to know Garnacho's there.

Anyhow, there's no player in the world who leaves that ball - and rightly so.

To me as well. It was a lazy thing to do

Harsh. This is the first world class manager he’s probably had. Let’s give him some time too.

I don't want to take anything away from his recent performances but we need more from him still to be considered a decent United level CB. Some leadership at the back, some organisation.

We still have one of the overall worst defences that United have ever had. We concede goals from everywhere, even if it isn't always Maguire's direct fault.

Yeah, but you’d have to be Guti to see that on the pitch. Realistically I doubt that any center back in the world (heck, even the majority of the attackers) would have the awareness and creativity to execute that, so it’s hard to expect that kind of a play from Maguire.

Yeah, I don't blame him for taking the shot. Only a handful of players have the vision and awareness to pull something like that, so nothing against him.
