Very good performance, we are finally playing a stlye where the CB just mopping up and starting attacks. Palace were feeding on scraps all game.

I slate Maguire when he's bad, so only fair I praise him when he's good and he was good today.

Still worry about him against the very best counter attacking teams. However, we aren't likely to face many of those this season because we're in the Europa League. Plus, you can't really dispute how he dealt with things today.

If we keep possession for longer spells under ETH and the pressing is good I can see us being pretty stable with any pair of CBs. I think all our CBs are fairly decent even the 5th choice (Bailly). Never understood the campaign against our defenders and Maguire in particular when last season:

-We were bottom in the league in terms of tackles and duels lost when Ole got sacked. Whatever happened in the dressing room got our players showing minimal effort, and after a pair of months under RR they disconnected again.
-Terrible pressing from the front with the worst presser of Europe and some others who didn't have the age excuse.
-Incapable of keeping possession and going from end to end like headless chickens.
-The keeper refusing to leave the line to back the defensive line.

In conclusion we spent most of the season with a middle block composed by 6-7 players isolated in the middle of nowhere, with plenty of gaps all around. Give these defenders a solid platform to play and they'll become good players again as they were before this mess of a season.

By the way I don't think it matters much if the team sits deeper or higher but the lines have to be compact and operate together. What we saw last season in that sense was unprofessional and not precisely because of our CBs, despite them being targeted and asked to pay all the bills.

People are fecking stupid, booing him :wenger:
He's a good CB. He might not be a top CB, but he has his uses and he is definitely a good CB. The hate is ridiculous for him and purely because of his price

Thought he was really good day.. looks to suit him a lot more playing on the right. His passing was excellent.

United's online atmosphere spearheaded by cnuts like goldbridge has ruined the fanbase.

Imagine booing your own player in a pre-season friendly and for what?

This hasnt been the first time either. 2019 in China or Singapore again during pre-season when it was trendy to slag off Ashley Young he got jeered and booed off when he was subbed.

Thank god some of these plastics will never get to step foot in Old Trafford that's all im going to say.

He is on it on a hourly basis with his slagging, its actually pathetic.

Maguire and the team had a bad season, lets give the manager time to implement his tactics then see how Maguire performs.

Imagine flying to Australia and finding the locals booing you. I'd pack my bags and go back home immediately.

Thought he was good today. I've been very critical of him so fair play - I hope he has a great season. Thought the boos were ridiculous though, surely we want to be giving confidence to our players coming into the season

Good today.

Can be very good in the right system too.

The fans booing him are morons. Better not leak into the season.

He was good today, it's a shame he was booed. Hopefully that's by palace fans.

Its disgusting to hear some of our fans booing the captain.

Hopefully he has a great season to show the haters theyre wrong and know nothing about football.

Did quite well today. I recall him being a slow-starter so good to see him getting up to speed. Still needs to show more to cement a starting slot. Varane’s fitness issues is just dreadful.

Yes because there is only one way of defending, one system that every defender knows instantly where they should be and what they should be doing in any system or tactical set up.

In this case the LW dosent press gives the full back too much time and space and everything else falls apart and we get caught out, that because in a high press system everyone has to be fully commited to the press otherwise teams can pick holes through you, like what happened, we will concede goals like this all season infact if you watch Liverpool and City you will notice they too concede chances and goals like that, where teams pick through there press and get down the side and they all get turned around.

For maguire there isn't really an awful lot he can do once he's sprinting back towards his own goal with a runner behind him and a player with time and space to pick the pass on the Wing, other than hope the pass isn't up to scratch,no matter how fast he is he cant cover the entire penalty area.
There's more defending of Maguire in your post than there was defending from Maguire in that match.

I hope he gets his shit together and remembers how to play football. We need him. But I won't make excuses for him nor pretend his mistakes aren't mistakes. I would bet money that he's not going to survive in an ETH system.

The booing doesn't surprise me. You see on here how influenced our fans can be by the ridiculous scapegoating on twitter and big YouTube channels.

Or his performances, if he played well he wouldn't get booed

 Oh yes thank God plastic fecks wont ever step foot in OT and mix with such pure crowd. Guess Goldbrigde and such also spearheaded/ruined fanbase that they mocked every single move by Fellaini in friendly game vs Valencia.

Imagine mocking your own player in a pre-season friendly at Old Traford for not reason, best part, he scored at the end in spite of good majority of cnuts that day calling themself a home crowd.

In pre season, booing the captain of the club who has been given the captaincy by ten hag. :wenger:

He's getting booed because of his performances if he starts playing well then he won't get booed.

To suggest the only reason he got booed is to do with twitter or YouTube was nonsense that's all I'm saying.

Did he perform badly today to get booed?

He was one of the worst performers last season. This is a new season. New manager, new system. Booing him at this point is not fair.

He should be given a fair chance to be successful just like Shaw and others.

The whole team would be getting booed if that was the case.

Absolute bollocks. Why aren’t they all getting booed then? The whole team was dog shite last year. He’s getting booed because certain troll bellends have made it cool to boo him.

Anyway, he looks class on the right side of defence. Every time I’ve seen him there he looks comfortable.

Played well. Still got booed.

Hopefully, one day, reality will again become more important than meme. Not in 2022, though.

I think its reached a point of no return for Maguire in that regard. Even if he goes on to have a 9/10 season, he'll have people throwing videos of him misplacing a couple of passes, getting beat for pace here and there, and blaming him for basically all goals we concede and then point out thats why he's a shit defender. In their eyes, he'll never have a better than 5/10 season even if in reality it was 8-9/10 season.

Posters are correct above. He originally got booed due to poor performance and the trolls online have exacerbated the issue.

Guaranteed, he will be booed in most grounds when playing away for no reason. It's the cool thing to do now.

Captained the worst United team in history. Got battered. Not just beaten but humiliated by numerous teams. Downed tools. Fighting in the dressing room. Refused to do interviews. Did the hands on ears thing. Liked a post accidentally about Ronaldo getting less wages and on and on.
I've never booed a player and I think Harry can be a decent player for us but if this was me I would think I deserved a few boos and make it up to the fans or die trying. Not the worst thing in the world. Just play better and be better and you wont be booed

Thought he played well today

Maguire gets booed a bit in a nothing friendly and it's the headline football story on the BBC.

Always amuses the way the English press froth at the mouth and desperately cover for England players, only to turn on them the second they make a mistake in an international tournament.

It was a preseason friendly in Melbourne. Completely unnecessary.

Him not making a mistake means he’s had a good game. Give it a couple of transfer windows, he’ll be moved on.

I'm all for showing dissatisfaction with players, when we're midseason, it's competitive and it's warranted. Booing a guy that is your club captain (whether you like him or not) who's traveled across the world to entertain you just seems in really poor taste.

And if you do think Maguires been shit then do you think this sort of action will boost his confidence and improve his play? Embarrassing, smalltime behavior.

How many season ticket holders made it to Australia for the match against Palace? The headlines shouldn't be 'Maguire booed by own fans' , it should be, "Australian football fans boo Maguire". Maybe the problem is more with Australian fans than Maguire. The only time I'd think booing your own player would be acceptable is in a case like... Ronaldo who has tried to get a move away and didn't turn up for pre-season. I think as long as a player is doing their best, you support them on match days. Online cafes, that's a different story.
