ETH praised our Captain again. No doubt Maguire under ETH will surprise many fans who dont see his qualities.

I see the Maguire fanatic already has double the amount of posts of the next highest poster in this thread, and the season hasn't even started

He is going to partner Martinez I bet

Didn't Ten Hag just say that he analysed United over the last 12 months and we conceded most of our goals from the left side of defence (Maguire's position) and that's why Martinez was brought in? How is that praise?

Read between the lines lads, you're only ever going to play in an ETH team if as a player you're playing with a lot if authority and confidence, wether be it Varane, Martinez, Maguire, Lindelöf or Eric whoever isn't doing well would be dropped.

Be quite insane if he's preferred to Varane. I know the Frenchman hasn't impressed here yet, but his ceiling is higher than Maguire's by a significant amount.

Bit of a hot take but I think Varane's off next season.
I actually said the same to my mate a few weeks ago. Varane at United seems like a bit of a mismatch for some reason. If he doesn't make a go of it this season that'll be curtains. With Ronaldo and De Gea out of contract next season, we could see those two and Varane all leave (assuming Ronaldo ends up staying this year). Another million a week off the wage bill potentially.

I imagine he'll be out pretty quickly if he keeps on making the same mistakes so let ETH get this out of his system first. I reckon Bailly could end up partnering Martinez the way things are going.

Yeah same, he hasn't really done much, seems to be phoning it in quite often and turning up just for the pay. I think he heads to PSG or Italy the end of next year and we cash in. It hasn't really worked out.

If Varane can get over his crockiness, then yes. But if he keeps dropping after every 4-5 games, then we will have to play with others.

Just came in to post this after I read it. Great news, hopefully it's Varane on the right. If Maguire can beat him out for that position then great.

Who will be injured for GW4

And get replaced by Bailly who will score an own goal + win us a match with an MOTM performance and then injure himself with a last ditch tackle all in GW5 and lead us back to Captain Marvel by GW6.

This probably isn't even beyond the realms of possibility !

After watching the last friendly, it seems he's moving Maguire over to the right and Martinez will play on the left instead. Not sure who the backup left sided defender will be but Maguire is now competing with Varane, Lindelöf and probably Bailly is he sticks around.

Telles :wenger:

I just hope he is hold to scrutiny like any other player should be. If he performs he should play because easily he is our second best CB and we will have a player in our hand, if not bench him and sell next summer.

Yeah judging him 5 minutes into his first pre-season game still trying trying to adjust to a new system under a new manger when we concede a goal that really wasn't his fault after Melbourne victory compleatly bypassed our press and very easily got down the side of the other CB in behind the full back after waltzing through our midfield that was non-exsistent after the LW basically forgot to press, no doubt that shows that maguire is incapable because he didn't have the pace of Usain Bolt to cut out the pass.
This system called defending is tough for a lot of players to learn. It didn't help that Maguire was stood there ball-watching as all that happened, and only at the last minute realized he was acres away from the player he should have been marking.

Unless Maguire raises his level and becomes a robust defender I don't see him at United long term. Too much limitation, too many blunders in his performances and he lacks the instincts of simply reading the game. Many defenders lack speed but if they read the game effectively they offset the need to be reactionary with their positioning.

If ETH intends to play a highline Maguire will not feature in many appearances. Exactly the same situation as Chris Smalling, who despite being quite sound defensively is too poor in possession to build from the back. Maguire is too slow to play higher up the field but not sharp enough in reading the game so he will almost always be against the run of play.

The main quotes from Ten Hag are below: -

“I think he is. He’s proved it in the past but he also has to prove it in the present time and in the future.

“He has played 46 times for England. Harry is really impressive and I expect a lot from him.

“But there is also internal competition and that is what a club like Man United needs. You cannot win with 11 players.

“We need a squad, especially this season with so many games. We have the Europa League, the Premier League and the World Cup so we need a full squad with high-quality players, not quantity.”

“I think so. And I think we have good centre-halves and Harry is one of them. He can play on the left side and on the right because he is a right-footed centre-half.”

“It can help. I will support him everywhere I can. In the end, he has to do it by himself, and he has the qualities to do it. He has shown it so often in the past."

“I always see the captaincy as an issue that I dictate. The team building for me is an important point and I always talk about a group of leaders. The captain is a really important one and I’m happy with him.”

Not exactly the same. Smalling was perfectly able to cope in LvG’s high line on account of his speed and agility.

He wasn’t great on the ball, though I’d argue he looked a lot more awkward than he actually was, but with Blind alongside him it didn’t matter a great deal in any case.

I’m actually fairly sure that Maguire has the necessary skills to be able to adapt to ETH’s demands, and look forward to seeing a Maguire-Martinez partnership in action.

Yes because there is only one way of defending, one system that every defender knows instantly where they should be and what they should be doing in any system or tactical set up.

In this case the LW dosent press gives the full back too much time and space and everything else falls apart and we get caught out, that because in a high press system everyone has to be fully commited to the press otherwise teams can pick holes through you, like what happened, we will concede goals like this all season infact if you watch Liverpool and City you will notice they too concede chances and goals like that, where teams pick through there press and get down the side and they all get turned around.

For maguire there isn't really an awful lot he can do once he's sprinting back towards his own goal with a runner behind him and a player with time and space to pick the pass on the Wing, other than hope the pass isn't up to scratch,no matter how fast he is he cant cover the entire penalty area.

He seems to really overhit every pass, even when it gets to its intended target it tends to bounce off forcing the receiving player to take a second to control it.

Honestly he's been pretty good, his passes started off shaky but his distribution was good by the end of the half.

He was excellent today. Showed really good vision to hit the wingers too. Bizarrely, was getting booed I'm pretty sure.

Misplaced a couple of passes early on but besides that he looked excellent. Very calm in possesion and his long balls out to the wingers where point on.

Thought he was really good today, looked more like the player he was in his first couple of seasons. He was also pretty good on the ball with his short passing.

He was okay, still takes too long on the ball imo.
