Couldn't help feeling sorry watching him try to run back at Melbourne, wasn't even that long in to the game and it pretty comprehensively showed why it wouldn't work under ETH. Particularly just after stepping up way too late leaving their player onside, ah well least we got reinforcements.

Play a specialised CDM in front of him and he will be dandy. Otherwise he can't hold on his own.

Yeah judging him 5 minutes into his first pre-season game still trying trying to adjust to a new system under a new manger when we concede a goal that really wasn't his fault after Melbourne victory compleatly bypassed our press and very easily got down the side of the other CB in behind the full back after waltzing through our midfield that was non-exsistent after the LW basically forgot to press, no doubt that shows that maguire is incapable because he didn't have the pace of Usain Bolt to cut out the pass.

Yeah......But......Shut up

Juventus are apparently going after Gabriel as De Ligt's replacement. Could see Arsenal going for Maguire to replace him. Would be typical Arsenal anyway.

I saw the melbourne goal many times and i cant believe some fans blame our Captain.

Top quality post that. Well done.
I'm in agreement with you
The arguments against Maguires ability are usually nonsensical and have no base other than its popular to criticise him.

My 'Yeah...But....Shut up' post is a way of saying that your post was spot on and the only come back anyone could give would be nothing but nonsense.

That goal isn't scored with Bailly, Varane or even Tuanzebe instead of Maguire, but let's just carry on with our heads in the sand.

He's severely slow people

It would happen to Pique, De Ligt and Hummels though in fairness, and a bunch of other quality centre backs that weren’t/aren’t blessed with pace.

Hummels and Pique are much smarter/experienced players and know their limitations. They both are also more used to playing with a lot of space behind them. They could very well have positioned themself better to prevent that goal. De Ligt comes from Ajax and is used to playing with a lot of space behind him. De Ligt also isnt as slow as old Pique, old Hummels or non athlete Harry Maguire.

Nonsense, it was an out and out sprint against a faster attacker, I’ve seen both Pique and Hummels (and De Ligt) get fecked by similar on plenty of occasions.

such as..

People forget that both United and City were after him that summer he signed for us. Meaning Pep saw him as a viable option for his high press team. Not saying he'll start but I think he can't simply be dismissed as the starting option. We just have to wait and see what ETH has in mind.

That was just Pep playing 4D chess I think

Who Maguire? No way.
Maguire takes a lot of responsibility on the ball. Varane just wants to get rid of it and I think this has people confused.

Both Maguire's touch and passing ability is worse than Varane. Don't get me started on when Maguire starts to dribble like he's Beckenbauer then either (1) hoofs it or (2) passes it to the left back who was available prior to his dribble, then rushes back into position.

 we give that man too much credit.
Look at it this way, is Stones noticeably quick or faster than Maguire? I don't think so. Yet he plays regularly in that city team.

We were both also after Alexis Sanchez.

The get the sentiment but you’re on about the manager that bought Ake for £40mil to warm his bench, Danilo & Mendy. He could have just as easily gone down as a Mangala for them.

The ‘Pep wanted him once’ defence is embarrassing. We’re 3 years in & his appearances don’t justify themselves so let’s talk about how a manager with a bottomless pit once wanted him, though even he balked at £80mil. The standards are in the basement for this guy.

My opinion on Maguire is that he's average at best, unless he has 1 or 2 solid CDMs in front of his, as we see with England...we aren't signing a CDM, and the high line will only show him up even more.

I honestly think the captaincy needs to be taken from him, yes it'll be a kick in the balls for him, but he needs to deal with that over the next few weeks, and focus on his main job and improve in his defensive role...anything else is a distraction.

Klopp played a high line with one, Pep with another and ETH with the final name.

They are better, but that isn’t the point, that goal is scored even if you replace Maguire with any of those.
I know but as far as I'm concerned there are 4 other centre backs in the squad that are more suited to this style of football. Why would we persist with a slow centre back when we've completely gone away from the style of football he prefers?

Most center backs are slow. You're not going to find many Usain Bolt's in opposition team defenses. With a high defensive line your primary focus of defending is the front line. Martial, Rashford and Sancho have to put in a proper shift.
If the ball reaches our defenders, then the system has already failed.
It is why we need Rashford and co to improve dramatically from last season when it comes to their defensive duties.

Good modern day defenders have great positional awareness, can read the game well and have excellent distribution of the ball out from the back. That's why Lisandro Martinez is our latest signing. He's not going to win you 100m sprints and he doesn't need to. The aforementioned qualities are more than enough to ensure a solid defensive screen for the team that plays a high line.
Nowadays you defend from front to back.
The forward line press has to be perfected or we'll see more goals like the one against Melbourne City FC.

Nobody is trying to defend his previous mistakes nor should they. I'm not even a fan of Maguire, far from it. All I'm saying is we shouldn't be quick to rule him out under ETH. People are quick to point out that he's too slow yet players like John Stones and Pique cope just fine in high pressing, high possession systems.

Varane, Bailly, Tuanzebe are not slow at all and even Lindelof is quicker.

I agree with the fact that the whole team should defend from the front but think that we have better defenders for this system.

All the favourable comparisons to ‘slower CBs’ mean nothing until Maguire does what the others have been able to for sustained or even shorter periods & that’s play well enough to win something. There’s this strange phenomena with Maguire where we’re still talking about the concept not the player.

I agree we can’t simply write him off under EtH for his pace, or lack there of, but 3+ years on the current Maguire has sod all to do with what Pep saw. I just want him to play well consistently, I could care less about Stones & Pique.

Maguire is being phased out. The whole captain stuff means nothing.
Varane and Martinez will be our starting pair, with Lindo and Bally as back ups. Not sure why United fans are convinced Maguire starts, ETH will not care about his fee since he didn’t buy him and has no vested interest…

If Maguire was at another club does anyone think Ten Hag would be interested in signing him?
Yes. Just like Pep Guardiola wanted him. Managers who want to play out from the back will see what he offers.
Who Maguire? No way.
Definitely. Varane is awkward on the ball. Maguire is a natural like Timber and Martinez. Ten Hag will value what he brings in possession.

He can't play a high line, we will get destroyed this season playing a high line with Maguire starting.

Pep can buy and throw away multi million defenders. It hardly means anything.

Right now, pretty much all of our players are looked upon favourably as concepts rather the players they've been over past 3 years, which is why they are all under the spotlight.
I hope Varane gets over injuries and forms a partnership with Martinez but I doubt that's gonna happen. He's looking like he'll need to be managed like Ledley was at Spurs back in the day.

I think that with our team set up a certain way and with more prescriptive coaching, that Maguire is going to surprise us with much better performances (Leicester level form) this season.

Maguire might do well as a sweeper/libero due to his tendency to follow the ball and his passing capabilities. Man marking and reading the game is not his forte but his aggression to recover the ball and pass it forward is certainly there.

Would be sold next summer for less than half the price he was initial bought.

Quite possibly. It feels somewhat like the Rooney situation when Jose took over. Under LVG it was "my captain will play every week", Rooney was still the headline name, and Rooney played the full 90 every week despite looking a shadow of his former self. Fans were clamouring for him be dropped. Jose handled it pretty well actually, bringing in a 9 in the style he wanted and gradually fazing Rooney out. Difference with Maguire is its a question of his ability whereas Rooney it was his physical decline, but it feels similiar in that he will probably get given the opportunity to start in the beginning but if he doesn't perform we have a manager who will move him out of the side immediately, with his own man in Martinez at LCB, Maguire will have to out-perform Varane and Lindelof to hold down a spot at RCB. Pressure and expectation really on Maguire now, the safety net of "he's half decent with his left foot so he can play LCB" is taken away. He either has to show a LOT more at RCB, or he'll be gone. If Martinez and Varane/Lindelof form a functional partnership it won't either be a headline or cause a fuss.

I don't hold any of those views with regards to Maguire.

You're contradicting yourself. I'd imagine it's hard to keep track when you're doing a WUM routine.

You implied the club let Pogba go because "he didn't fit into ETH's plans" (your words)

By saying him leaving was mutual (my words) it means he wanted to leave. This is quite obvious when he signed a significantly reduced contract at Juve, (a club he was successful at) compared to what he would be on here.

You've literally said in one post the club wanted him out, then in the next, you said the club didn't want to let him go

The club offered him a contract which meant they wanted to keep him. When a player leaves on a free when a contract is on the table, its not mutual.

But like how you avoided the point, do you think the FA in Southgate's contract have that he should play as well?

But you literally said the club didn't want Pogz because he doesn't fit with ETH's tactics, 2 posts ago

I never implied there was such a thing re: Maguire. You have me confused with another poster. I was merely pointing out the inconsistencies in your WUM routine (and that you don't know what mutual means).

He may get phased out. Martinez doesn't sound like ETH even gave a hoot who would best fit Maguire. He's starting from who will best fit his system, everything else can get fecked.

Look forward to discussions about our defense no longer having to cater to a CB who isn't even that great by United standards. He needs a DM, he needs the attackers to never make a mistake or a world class RCB or for the team to never have to defend at all. It gets ridiculous at times. Like are we supposed to go a full season without having him in a single unfavourable situation. Mistakes happen, we can't always be one long ball in behind from being carved open. His pace isn't the problem, it's how he uses it.
