Should be moved on asap. Nervy as hell,
disrupts the harmony we seem to have created with the spine of Licha, Varane, and Casemiro.

Can't wait for the day he fecks off, actually.

I mean I'm not being funny but I don't think it's that much of an indictment of Maguire that he finds it easier playing alongside Casemiro and Martinez than McTominay and Lindelof... (Although I will say I actually don't think Lindelof is all that bad either)

It's more me commenting on people that think he was good when in reality he was bad that first half and then sort of was just sheltered by the other two in the second while West Ham did nothing. Does that count as a good performance? I don't think so personally.

Maguire and Lindelof bring the worst out of each other. McT being the DM didn't help either. Those three cannot start together. I'll give him his props, aerially he had zero issues and you can see that he is trying to play the way EtH wants, but he simply can't. It's not his fault, his body and mind doesn't operate at that speed. Shifting him in the summer and getting a backup for Varane is best for both parties.

He makes Smalling look good on the ball. He is so ponderous in everything he does including the offside trap.

I really, really don't like him as a player but he was absolutely fine from what I saw (I could only catch the second half).

I think he had to do better for the goal. Go and close down the strike there’s no one else there or around him. Just too sluggish. His time is done here. Sell in the summer and let’s invest in the next big CB talent.

Much better second half. So much dithering in the first half but Lindelof was just as guilty, if not more. They just bring out the worst in each other and yet i've seen them both have decent games besides Martinez.

His defending was largely fine, but Christ he is ponderous on the ball.

I didn’t really see it as a problem until this season with Martinez coming in. Relentlessly sideways and backwards.

Besides that Antonio chance which is both his and Lindelof's fault he didn't feck up. I think he could have closed on Benrahma on the goal but besides that not many mistakes.

Still he's not at the level required, he's slow, takes ages to play the ball and his anticipation is close to none.

I hope he's gone by the summer.

YOu would have thought that ETH told him to move the ball faster, yet he's playing like he's got so much time on the ball and not only he gets caught sometimes but can't just make us play faster. Got seriously better in the second half when we finally send midfielders on the pitch though.

I mean was he really sheltered second half? Casemiro was as good as ever when he came on but Licha made his fair share of mistakes (absolutely rinsed by Antonio), and I'd go so far as to say Maguire was actually the better of the two when they were both on the pitch.

I mean Licha got smoked by Antonio but then Maguire doesn't bother trying to challenge him and lets him have a free run. He also just allowed Benhrama a free go at goal as well instead of closing him down as he comes into the box. And basically that's all West Ham did in the half. Scoop up a few easy long balls and we had the majority of possession the last 25 minutes. That's sort of my point

Pretty bad first half with the dawdling on the ball and that laughable attempt at offside trap for the Antonio chance. Improved second half, mostly because Licha and Casemiro were on the distribution duty.

Overall not a terrible performance and doesn't deserve over the top criticism, the particulaer combination of him, Lindelof and McTominay is just hopeless though.

Fecking hate his big booming headers straight back to the opposition when he has time.

Varane or Martinez, even Lindelof will think to find a teammate but with Maguire it's just "Harry smash ball good with head."

Don't get me fecking started on him standing around with the ball. Reminds me of Monk in Mean Machine.

He'd be very good for a bottom table team, where he wouldn't have to leave his own half and wouldn't have any of the ball. Just lots of headers

I thought the ball rolled under his foot from a pass at one point in the first half? He should concentrate on what he intends to do with the ball rather than pointing to people and places. For some reason, it made me irritated.

I would think at least half of the first team players have won more than he has so far, and they probably do not need him to point out where they should be or what they should be doing at all times.

Now they we have a better first choice pairing I think you all need to reassess some standards.

A third choice CB who is flawless wouldn’t be content not starting games.

I think he’s a very useful player to have for these games and if we ever wanna play back tbree

From reading this thread (and watching the highlights he’s being criticised for), I’m guessing he was probably absolutely fine and did a good job of providing cover for Varane, so he’s available to face Liverpool on Sunday.

He takes 4- 5 touches then telegraphs exactly where he is going to pass the ball so he invites pressure in the rest of the defence.

Tonight Casemiro had to come deeper than normal to get the ball and passit forward because slabhead was dawdling and passing sideways.

He also has an unwavering ability to stand 1 metre deeper than anyone else and then leap forward just as the ball is released and goes past him for the opposition runner.

He creates chaos and uncertainty across the whole backline and needs to go.

He’s still in the team due to him being an example of how ETH wants his players to behave/perform.

No one is undroppable no matter who you are. But keep being a model pro and not sulking will get you odd minutes as subs and as a starter in certain less important games for chances to improve your form.

The bolded part is why he's incompatible with high line. Even when you're slow, it's much better to learn to do an offside trap properly than dropping behind everyone and defend all by yourself.

Doesn't seem to understand what is the tempo though. Always play at his own pace which can slow the team down, even when the opposite is required.

+ De Gea. The gruesome foursome. Just a complete lack of ideas and impetus. Maguire was much better in the second half, though you'd have to say it was because as soon as Casemiro and Martinez were on and firing it was over for West Ham.

Am I the only one who thinks he should of closed down the attacking player on the first goal? Other than that, he wasn't too bad.

England generally looking really solid with him makes me think Rice isn't overrated. They aren't always in a deep block and still don't get cooked as much as they should with him back there messing up the offside trap/marking.

Walker played more like a side CB than a normal FB too. Saka in turn operates almost a wing back on possession.

International football is very different. Many teams don't have the right ingredient for a well oiled tactic. Can't specifically consistently exploit weakness. England as a team are one of the best squad, team around. Even supposed strength of the team can be dulled due to lack of chemistry, familiarity. England supposed to be strong in air, organized box attacking, box defending, set piece yet they still concede, lack of goal from set piece.

I think he would be a superb player if only football was time based.

Only because someone made Ole the worlds most powerful coach

He was scouted by Mourinho the year before. We didn't want to pay 70m that year and Mourinho eventually got sacked. He was most likely recommended to Ole by our brilliant scouts who then approved it.

He is absolutely joke of a defender, I have no idea how can anyone watch that and think he was good. Even for their goal for some reason he didn't come out for the player but made a nothing block that just blocked de Gea's view. Also when Lisandro fecked it up, just look at his reaction, he looked like he was sleeping and took ages to react and left Antonio for some reason to go one on one with de Gea while he was covering players on the other side(????).

In his last game that people praised for some reason, the first thing he did when he came on was getting embarrassed/dribbled past near the dug out even though someone from our players doubled the opponent there.

It was a shockingly lazy piece of defending, Bruno is busting his balls running from midfield to get a block on and he's just stood there doing nothing inside the box when the player is about to shoot. People on here have been laughing at VVD for doing this exact same thing.

People see no major feckups and think at least he didn't do anything really bad. Even though he's slow as feck on the ball which kills any tempo the team is trying to create, which allows the opposition to get setup and ultimately makes it harder to create anything in attack, he has poor positioning most of the time and didnt make any efffort to block their goal.

He's not a terrible player, Leicester was perfect for him, he's just not suited to playing in a team that wants to play fast front foot football.

There was a west ham attack in the first half where the backline was all over the place. Just seems to be carnage when he and Lindelof are together.
