He was bad even in his first season but people were never blaming him. It was either De gea's,Shaw's or Lindelof's fault but never Maguire's. 2nd season people were using the Greece incident as to why he was so bad. Like come on man.
I still remember in his first season every time he was criticised his fanboys came out in full swing.
He was never the defender people want us to believe. I can’t remember a starting defender as bad as him playing for a super club like ours. Maybe, Bailly, Kimpembe or Lenglet.

He's also nowhere near as bad as some would have us believe either

I actually remember him being decent in the first season. When I say decent, I mean not making numerous mistakes and actually giving the defence some confidence after some chaotic defending we had in the previous years. However, even at his peak it’s always felt he was never good enough to take us where we needed to be. There were always arguments that he needed a better partner than Lindelof. But even alongside Varane or Martinez, he doesn’t look any better.

I think having the full backs he had and the midfield in front of him had a lot to do with it as well

I already knew after the Partizan game that he wasn't all that what people and the media made him out to be.
Painfully average

I’d like to think it’s about standards. He is not as bad but not good enough to be a mainstay for Manchester United. I think him to be a Wes Brown level defender just a bit slower.

Wes Brown was a good defender and a lot quicker, just got injured too much, I agree Maguire isn't top drawer but he doesn't deserve the hate he get's on here

Brown even without injuries was behind the quality defenders that should be starting for United. I liked Brown and I thought he was class but just a bit short in quality to be first choice.
People forget we bought Heinze, Rio, Vidic and Old Blanc with Brown in the squad. Not starting for a super club doesn’t mean you’re a bad footballer. Maguire has shown himself to be one of the best English defenders right now but United has a global pool to select from.

I definitely didn’t understand the hype around him other than a World Cup where he was famous for winning every header on corners. I still find it hard to believe Pep wanted him at City. I just don’t see how he would work in any team that has a desire to play high and press with leaving 2 at the back.

Anybody else think this latest "injury" is for him to save face at not being picked in the final and being able to lift the trophy without being ridiculed for not playing ? (If we win of course)

No.

It might be, but it might also not be. I'm inclined to say maybe.
Guess we will never know.

I just think it's some brilliant man management from Ten Hag to say listen Harry you won't be playing the final so instead of you coming on for the last two minutes and then lifting the trophy, we will tell everyone you are injured and that's why you wasn't involved in the game and you can go and lift the trophy as the captain. (hopefully in a suit and not John Terry style)

With Shaw being able to cover for CB/LW the bench will become harder for Harry to make, especially when everyone returns to fitness.

To me Maguire was solid in his 2nd season with us as well. Yeah he started terribly (as most of the team though, had no preseason). However, even in those 2 seasons (especially second) there were worrying signs about him in that even when he plays good there's possibly one big mistake that costs us. I was blind to it and defended him a lot - I'm glad I defended him because some of it wasn't criticism but genuine hatred. Anyways, having Martinez and Varane showed us all limitations that Maguire and Lindelof have and it's clear Maguire can't stay as squad option as he was 80M signing and can be perfect for midtable PL club like Villa etc.

On Pep wanting Maguire - it's sounds like conspiracy theory but sometimes I believe he was doing it so we buy Maguire. Same with Alexis Sanchez. He wanted Fred as well but we can see Fred is useful option to have when played in right position.

If we win on Saturday, I can imagine this thread will heat up due to it being Maguire lifting the trophy :nervous:

:drool:Bring on the quadruple and he can keep doing a John Terry, getting out of his tracksuit in his full kit.

Id happily have him lift every trophy as long as we keep winning them and he doesn’t play.

The only solid perfomances he had was when we parked the bus and had a whole team defending under Mourinho.. Let's hope we'll never see him play again. Martinez->Varane->Shaw->Lindelof->Jones->Some juniors->Maguire

I really hoped that ETH would be able to fix some if not all of his issues so that he is a good reliable backup / rotation option. He cost us 80M and I hate to see that go to waste. However it looks increasingly likely that he is not in ETH's plans and will be moved on in the summer. I have no hope of us even getting 50% of our money back.

Can we please get some context on the £80M transfer fee. Yes we overpaid for a then rival club's player and yes he's been shit since the Greece debacle. However in his first 2 seasons he played very well and helped us pip his former club to the CL spot.

That makes the risk premium Leicester demanded in case we did just that much more palatable. Without the CL to attract better players and earn significantly higher revenue, they have faded away.

And we are now ready to move on and possibly get a £30M transfer fee. I think the deal turned out okay, especially when considering our other transfer activities.

Flawless game. ETH has truly found his ideal position.

The fact that you felt the need to do this after the barca game, really says a lot about the nature of football fans on the internet

I think a lot of the Maguire bashing comes from his arrogance and sense of self importance. We can all accept players going through bad patches or simply not being United level talent, but Maguire seems to show no humility in his interviews or when he plays. I think, therefore, a lot of fans feel some satisfaction when we play so much better without him.

What an odd bump after such a great win
Are you proud?

Watching him walk off the bench after the game and down the tunnel, I found it emblematic of the ETH era. Benching the captain and such a expensive signing was an antithesis prior debacles. I was really happy that we won an important game that we would have had no chance in, had he played. So I posted, because it's decisions like these that will make us a big team again. As he walked off, I remembered him, and remembered where we were only last year.

I think it's a bit of that with me, but more the symbolism of the fact he's the captain and ETH has had no problem benching him. And we're reaping the rewards of him being benched. I think he'll be fine at west ham or something, and was really happy to just see him stay on the bench. Not even coming on when we went 2-1 up. That's progression.

Then why not praise EtH in his thread instead of bumping a performance thread of a player who didn't play?

He is a very good player that just does not fit with our system now. Both him and AWB were great for us while we played a defensive 'ish counter attack style with a lower line of defense. He was key to us going 3ed and 2ed in the league, a Europa League final and many semifinals. Very good player that will now have to find a different club that fits his qualities.

For all the shit Maguire gets, he has dealt with losing his place - in public at least - very well. He always says the right things, gets behind the team and has never been critical of ETH.

Yes I agree.

I used to get annoyed by his rather full-of-himself pronouncements, but recently he’s behaved with considerable dignity.

I just wish he wouldn’t fanny about for so long on the ball.

No smile or reaction at the final whistle. I think that’s poor from the “club captain”

Exactly. But whatever he says some people will make fun of it and hate him. Idiots.
