I very much agree with this. It reminds me of when Villa Boas went to Chelsea, demanded John Terry play a high line and made him look like a lump. As soon as Villas-Boas was replaced though, and Chelsea reverted to a more defensive style of play, Terry started looking like a quality defender again.
Maguire will, in my opinion, never excel outside of a low/mid block reactive/counter attacking system. Indeed, many of Ole's players will never do so. The squad profile we have is built for absorbing pressure and breaking on transition. Trying to play differently has destroyed the confidence of most of them and now they don't even have the belief to do what they used to be good at. Maguire (and Shaw) are the obvious examples of this.
Its true, the mistakes Maguire has made this season have been inexcusable. I do not blame the coach for Maguire's lazy, absent minded defending in recent matches. However, I accept that when a player isn't comfortable in a set up it makes them hesitant, shaky and nervous. I think we've been seeing that from Maguire all season. That's why he's diving in on halfway against Almiron and being left for dead. He just hasn't settled into this idea of Ole's to: 'Play on the front foot.'
