Imagine being Harry Maguire today, the day after thinking you've done something really clever only to have it dawn on you, you've made the shitstorm you were already in a thousand times worse with one misguided celebration.
He's going to have more people on his back than he ever has had at the club now and many who sympathised and tolerated his poor level this season will no longer accept any of it... all for a moment of madness.
My views on him are well documented, and I don't often speak up about him, but I'm aware that mostly when I do, it's to disparage him, although I've been defending him from the round of criticism he's had since returning to the United fold, I believe, prematurely, but he's made a rod for his own back now and I think the goodwill he had will absolutely not be there for him anymore - I think there's about to be a conflation between Ole's woes and Maguire's and he'll be the one people get at for every poor performance we have now whilst the game is live. He'll be a soft buffer for Ole temporarily.
The problem with Maguire's constitution is that he's shown he can't handle pressure here and hastens the collision course we're invariably on during matches with his own calamitous contributions, one can only wonder how much worse he's going to be now with people baying for him off the back of his actions on international duty.
I've had a go at Keane for digging out players whilst masterfully avoiding tearing into Ole, but there's one thing we all know about Keane, irrespective of what manager do or don't do and it's standards he sets for players, especially United ones - I think this time round, his views will be almost 100% aligned with the fanbase, which is basically a nail into Maguire's proverbial coffin. I genuinely think he's going to get booed now for mistakes he makes and poor performances for us.
The word 'toxic' gets thrown around a lot these days, but I can't think of a better one to use when thinking of the environment we're going into once international duty is over. It has the potential to be a brutal period where things actually get worse than they are now and Maguire is going to end bearing the brunt of it.
