Look at the shite on display this tournament. There aren't a lot of top class centre backs around. Lindelof is one of the better ones. Varane, Maguire and Lindelof is a great trio.

I don't rate him. He's fine as a squad player, but even then, I'd be fine with starting afresh and getting rid of both Bailly and Lindelof. And there's also the issue of him not complementing Maguire in almost any way.

Based on his actions on the pitch, he is far better player than captain. He is very quiet for a captain, someone like Bruno is far better captain material.

Anyway, I am done here, gotta say I am glad Maguire is playing well one more time, and that he is having an excellent season.

There you go

I seriously don't want to turn this into me hating Maguire since he's just had excellent season for us, but you just proved my point. Have a great night mate!
Well, after you told me I only preferred Grealish to Donny because he's English as Donny was obviously superior, I'm used to proving your points right!

And bring in who? Varane and Maguire starting. Who's #3?

Quiet Schmiet. The team looks different since he’s come back into it. His influence has been massive.

I find this a little shocking as an opinion.

He is very clearly a leader in our squad and the England squad.

Maguire is a good captain. I like Bruno a lot but he would not be a better captain. More talking doesn’t equal good captain.

Yeah, I don't think there's any chance of that this summer, but if both Bailly and Lindelof were coveted by some clubs that can pay for players (a rarity these days) I'd jump on it. I'd prefer Tuanzebe then not going on loan, and getting in some promising defender (I'm sure Adnan has a list of these) who has the right mental framework, to become part of the foursome. Phil Jones should really try and go out on loan to see if he can still play football for any length of time.

Again, if Lindelof is third choice, I've no complaints. But I still don't rate him.

Where did I say that, can you find that? I actually quoted you this year(for no reason but for remembering you didn't rate Donny) saying you are right regarding VDB and his lack of quality.

Absolutely love Tuanzebe, and if he could keep fit he'd be a sensational player. It's a big 'if' though. We can't rely on him yet. Those players on Adnans list won't be better than Lindelof, not yet anyway. How many feck ups have we seen this tournament from supposedly highly rated CBs?

That’s funny loads journos who have been going to games the last year have been saying how vocal Maguire is. Bruno gets too emotional and the spotlight would be even more intense if he was made captain.

I've already replied but this post is so strange I have to say more.

Our captain, who also plays for my country, plays brilliantly and it's weird that I like and praise him? What?

Why aren't you saying the same in the Shaw thread? I praise and defend him just as much.

Agreed.

I do think Maguire is a really calming and assured presence in this team and they are a lot better with him in it - with that said I do also think his actual performances in the tournament are in danger of being slightly overrated, he didn’t really have much defending to do.

Shaw has been magnificent though and you can tell he feels a lot more comfortable with Maguire next to him. Loved their embrace after the goal.

I think you´re mixing him up with Goldbridge.

Shocking? Many people have criticised Maguire as a captain, even Rio pretty much called him out and he is hardly criticising our players ever:

There's also few of our ex players and pundits calling out Maguire as a captain.

You praise him no matter how he plays, and are first one to praise him tonight, mentioning captaincy even though he really isn't great captain material by any means. Altough I do rate him from this year as a player though.

da faq you on about not captain material :wenger:

Well, I don't think we're buying more than one defender (hopefully we do that though) so moot point. But if the pair of them were sold, we could actively look to buy defenders who fit with whatever it is Ole wants from the team as a whole. The same point can be made about midfield, though we of course did buy Donny on Ole's watch.

We'll still be tactically limited when we have to pair Lindelof and Maguire together. So he's not the ideal defender off the bench either. But there's a list of priorities, and third defender is probably quite a way down. It's why I mentioned if there's a market for Lindelof (definitely Bailly) then we would be wise to exploit that. I don't think Tuanzebe/another promising defender would be a level down. I think we could look for someone who actually fits with how we presumably want to play. And that's not Lindelof, I don't think.

If we've got a injury to one of our starting CBs and we play Lindelof/Tuanzebe and Maguire, then we're doing better than anyone else in the league. Seriously, the quality of CBs in world football isn't that great. See watched the likes of Torres make errors Lindelof would get slaughtered for.

Guys a top defender, never been in question to me personally.

People have been tunnel vision about the price tag.
This is pretty much it. People have seemingly blamed him for the price tag, but for United it was worth it as we could see given the number of games he played and how we coped without him at the end of last season.

Agreed, man. I thought you would defend your countryman at all cost. But it's not really easy to find a clear upgrade on Lindelof. The available ones are hard to get.
Why would I? Never thought he would be good enough, in fact he has been better than I thought he would be.

He’s probably not far off Vidic in fairness

Hes very quiet to the point Rashford told him to feck off because he couldnt stop shouting during a match? Hahaha...
Here's a thing about Bruno being our captain, he's often got overwhelmed in the big games as shown many times last season. Remember him lost the plot in the EL final just because the linesman mistakenly judged a throw in?

I had a look back and, yes, I mistook you for another poster so my apologies. That is entirely on me and my crummy memory so, again, I am sorry for that, mate!
I think you´re mixing him up with Goldbridge.
I think he now criticises our board for going for Donny instead even though - as you say - he wanted Donny more, too.

I watched his interview with GNev a few days back and he genuinely comes across as such a great guy . He seems to really value his place as United captain which is really nice to see

Yeah it’s not just our own fanbase either, oppo fans I know like to pretend he’s awful, all I hear is ‘Maguire is feckin awful’ ‘slow’ blah blah

They ignore the fact he’s played more minutes than anybody in Europe and without him we completely crumbled.
He’s such a solid player for us, calm as you like as well.

One relatively minor thing I always appreciate with Harry as well is that under pressure, rather than lump it into row z, he’s composed enough and good enough on the ball to dummy the pressing player or turn him and retain possession calmly. For so many years defenders have panicked and conceded possession there keeping it safe. Small thing I know but it can go a long way when trying to maintain a grip on a game.
