Forget the context of your post & what it was intended for it criticised a player I like so I’m going to take offence.

I later go on in the post you’ve not really read to say I rate him higher than the initial posters ‘solid’ categorisation.

His poor performances post Greece? Did you watch him after Project Restart? Spurs away, Southampton, Bournemouth - again this is the mental gymnastics people play with this guy that I just don’t get.

He is a damn good CB, he is not without fault.

You said "my captain indeed", meaning you don't think he deserves to be our captain. That's what I am talking about.

fecking ell, you are actually gonna pull out Rome away?
Who mentioned Rome first?

Stay on topic.
Hang on, what the feck is this?

In April we won 6, draw 1, lost none. Then May started and we lost away to Roma, a nothing match which we'd already wrapped up in Manchester with a 6-2 twatting.

Move on lad, you’ve obviously had one too many after the England game. . .

Precious lot you Maguire fanatics, no one has called him a bad player - Vidic he certainly is not though.

Fair point, I will clarify.

I think he is a good captain & deserving of the captaincy.

However I believe the ‘my captain’ lark on here for a man who has won nothing of note with the club is a tad, premature.

He indeed is not far off Vidic. Don’t know why people are laughing.
His CB partner at United however is miles off the CB partner Vidic played with.
How would Vidic have performed with Lindelöf?

You said our form had turned before his injury so impossible not to mention Rome considering it was a) our only loss in the 8 games leading up to his injury and b) was the game before his injury.

So if it’s not Rome you’re blaming it on, it’s 6 wins and 1 draw in 7 games, with 5 conceded, that you declared was our form going on a downward trajectory before his injury, which makes less sense than your original point. Do keep up.

We broke the clean sheet record with Vidic mostly playing alongside Evans! I’d say Evans and Lindelof are about on par, Lindelof maybe a little better than Evans at that age. He was a one man defence that season.

The same Germany that put Manchester City’s Dias, named by 90% of the café as one of the top defenders in the world to the sword. Embarrassed the bloke.

Yes that one, that drew 2-2 with Hungary at home. I haven't said he's terrible, just noting that he's looked good against opponents that he's expected to look good against. Some posters are in here comparing him to Vidic.

So far in this tournament, he's looked like a pretty dominant CB to me. Don't know that I've seen anyone better, in fact.

Maguire is a very good player, one we definitely can win the highest honors with depending on the rest of the team. Vidic? Get the feck out of here! You’re just messing about though, right?

You wanted to expunge the Rome away game as a dead rubber lad, then presented games we played weakened sides as evidence we ‘crumbled’.

My point was we were conceding goals prior to his injury, that’s it. Now you’ve been told this multiple so you’ve subverted it to, but we were wining games. No sh*t Sherlock - teams can concede goals & win - that wasn’t the point being made though was it.

The point remains, we weren’t particularly better with him defensively leading up to his injury. We conceded over a goal a game with him in the side all season, bar the Liverpool anomaly we performed about par for our defence with him out the team, I’d argue our attack was impotent.

In the games he was injured we conceded more than 1 goal in 2 of them. The 4 against Liverpool who needed the result far more than we did [see what I did there, belittled the result as you did Roma away] is the only game you could say we played our best team in. We then conceded 2 against Leicester playing our u23s.

Keep playing the mental gymnastics lad, you’re on a tangent about a total separate topic.

Let’s see what you come up with next. . .

It's interesting to see that he still doesn't get that much recognition as one of the best CBs if not the best in current form, in the world. It's like some people don't like to admit they were wrong he's over prized. We paid top dollar for him but so we did with Rio at the time. He will turn out as one of our best signings even for that fee. Worth every penny. So happy that he can show how good he's when he doesn't play CB alone next to that puppy faced fraud.

He has it all. Defensively bar a couple of errors which happen to anyone he's a beast, monster in the air, strong as an ox, fearless in tackle, great at reading the game all round.

With the ball he's one of the best passers we've had. Amazing ability to sustain pressure and take the ball out of defence. Super hard to dispossed and that happens so rarely. And we all know who played football that having to dribble as a last man is always the worst mistake wwaiting to happen every coach hates. But he does that so well, in that he's very underrated still.

Mentality wise he's so resilient and always fit bar his impact injury, he always play, hard to imagine how the season went if he was out for some time. Luckily didn't happen but yeah we lost in the EL final because surprise Mr. getting bullied every game was at it again. I had some doubts at the beginning but I really like that he's our captain. And it's ridiculous how much better he can get when he gets a proper partner and we finally get our proper CDM/midfielder to not leave holes like McTominay. If his name was Lucio he'd be worth the same money as Harry Kane.

Vidic played with Rio fecking Ferdinand and prime Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes in midfield. I am not sure how hard is to understand that you need two CBs in the lineup instead of one and proper midfield. Maguire had a superb season and he can even take it to another level once he gets his Varane and CDM.

But yeah it's hard & dareful to compare someone to a club legend.

It is possible to compare CBs on individual merit. Think that’s all I’ll say on the matter.

Agree, doesn't get the credit he deserves for that. I think it's because it doesn't make sense. He's massive, not that quick or agile. Yet he's really good at dribbling, very hard to disposess.

The worst version of Germany in 20 years.
Who cares. Our record in knockouts at the Euros were terrible, our record in knockouts in general against top countries has been poor for a long time, and our record against Germany was terrible, too.

Add all that together and that victory is nothing to be sniffed at.

I'm putting a £20 on him to score next game - hes overdue.

Pally and Bruce - Im getting misty eyed just thinking about those pair. Pallys freekick against Blackburn, world class. Try telling the kids today, they wont believe you.
How much did you get then? Great call

For the first point, it would depend on what one considers fair recognition. I’ve long been a Maguire fan and think he’s had a lot of unwarranted criticism throughout his career, but I also don’t think he’s the best CB in the world (though I’d say he’s closer than many would say).

Lucio was one of the best defenders in the world for over a decade and won it all, but he only ever moved clubs for financial peanuts. I’m sure your argument is that a more exotic name would maybe lead to more recognition, but it was a funny choice!

I am pleasantly surprised how Maguire has developed this year. He has grown into the captaincy role as well.

Every error Maguire made was blown out of proportion on social media, making even United fans think he's crap. If you look back at the Maguire thread, every goal we concede is his fault somehow.

I mean every defender makes mistakes, I have seen VVD make high profile mistakes but its not on twitter everyday.

We had to pay £80m for him but that was was we required, an English CB who will become a leader and has PL experience. Unfortunately, VVD set the bar for a £75m signing so he was labelled a flop.

Probably because, after the Germany game, Jurgen Klinsmann on BBC was heaping praise on 'r 'arry, comparing his style of play to Lucio.

Just comparing the defenders themselves without the teammates, vidic is superior.

Ahh that makes sense now! I can see the comparisons, especially the way they move on the ball

I feel he brings a lot to the dressing room. He srems to have good values and supports the team mates. Really happy with him

He's the same. Just more people are realising that's not a bad thing.

He's literally not the same. That's the point; he had to improve and is doing so.
See: England game vs Denmark in the Autumn and United performances during the start and into the winter.

The slow-passing aspect is entirely legitimate as International football + different England team tactics is literally different to United's tactics in key games.
