Gun control

Actually I am American. What I found amusing is that CR said he's disabled his gun and it's no longer operable. Then you guys question his conviction by asking why he doesn't melt it down or throw it away in a river. I mean, either you believe him or you don't.
I believe it isn't currently operable. I believe it's massively easier to make it operable than if he was actually determined to avoid such.

I could sink it in the ocean and buy a whole new one the next day. But I won’t. Sometimes when someone says they won’t do something you should just take them at their word.

You could and whilst I'm just about willing to go along with your 'I want to turn it in' thing as a reason you don't I'm not seeing a reason to stop at just the pin as far as making it as hard as possible for anyone to ever get it back to working condition.

Unless you have anything new to add here, I'm not sure I have. I think I'm probably boring people here.

You’re the one questioning me, so...

I am. I've asked my questions. I've got my answers. I don't find them convincing at all but I don't think me repeatedly saying 'really?' and you saying 'yeah, really' is the way forward.
I mean... you coulda had an internal monologue with yourself and accomplished that.

I’ve been open and honest about my views on guns since I first came on here. From where I was in 2016, to how my views have evolved, to now. I’m actuallt proud of how they’ve changed over time. But yeah, whatever, not believing me is your right.

I'm just wondering what type of incident would actually make America take notice and do something about gun reform? I know kids getting shot to pieces is not enough. Just wondering.

Nothing. They’re beyond saving.

When nothing got done after Sandy Hook, I lost all hope that it would change. Maybe what needs to happen is many in a row, like if there's one or two more now. I don't know.

I used to think it would be legislators getting shot, but that hasn't affected anything.

I think mass shootings this frequent committed by black people would do it.

There are plenty of those, but they get filed away under gang violence. Which is partly fair, I guess, since terrorism is defined by motive. Although you get weird edge cases, like the Las Vegas shooting not being terrorism, since there was no discernible motive. That was just a mass shooting.

I think he was referring more about white suburbans getting mown down by black people on a regular and large scale basis. They don't really care about black on black crime.

Well, not even the death of one of their own POTUS was enough, so yeah they're pretty fecked. We'll just wait to see how bad the next one will be.

Give it up @Carolina Red. You aren’t allowed to change your stance on this. The cafe has decided. Unless we see photographic evidence of you taking your weapon to a furnace or of you fly tipping, we ain’t buying it. :wenger:

If all gun manufacturers were bought by unions and all profits were used to house the homeless and feed the sick they would be history within months.

It's all well and good saying 'gun control' and 'banning guns' but how do you retrieve the 300 million plus guns already in circulation? There are no registries, there are no records to say where it is or who has it, just the point of sale transaction. New Zealand are currently dealing with the same issue, making certain guns illegal outright and asking people to hand them in, some people will, some people won't.

Banning handguns in the UK was easy, all firearms are registered on a license, along with address and legal owner. The powers that be can (and did) simply went to the registered addresses and forced their purchase / turn in. That is simply impossible in the US. As someone else said previously, the culture is so entrenched and has been for so long that there simply is no way to legislate itself out of trouble. Any new laws making things difficult to get hold of are circumvented by the sheer number of them already in circulation.

Integrating better and more thorough checks and actually utilizing the laws already in place (mental health referrals, communication between health professionals etc) will be a big help.

Nah, leave them to it. They want their guns. They've got their 2nd Amendment. Their cops really, really love them. They can buy their assault weapons whilst getting a can of beer. Let them shoot themselves to pieces. Just keep it in the US. All they really want are thoughts and prayers.

That piece of shit country has turned into a cash cow for people that run it and those who get them in office. It’s beyond saving and I feel sorry for any family I have left over there because even though they’re part of the problem, they’ve been brainwashed by a lifetime of being told what to accept shoved down their throats.

The only evidence in reducing mass shooting is linked to confiscation not regulation.

Where there’s a will there’s a way (not saying it will be easy in USA but Australia managed it.

having said that I don’t think America will get to that point.

Every country has their turning point. The shooting where the government and people said enough is enough and took the guns away..and it worked!

That moment for the USA should have been sandy hook. The fact it wasn’t is simply the admission by the American public that they are happy for men, women and children to die everyday in order to keep their guns and there isn’t an atrocity awful enough that will ever change their minds.

Build a wall around USA to protect the rest of us.

Two more mass shootings, one with reportedly 20 dead. Unbelievable.

Wake the feck up America.

Fair point if not for fact that it's innocent people that are the victims. If this happened at an NRA meeting I would care a whole lot less.

Worth remembering that some of those killed may well have been for gun control every single bit as much as us. Or may have been too young to have an opinion. Pro gun people don't deserve to die for holding stupid opinions either (although they are obviously not helping themselves or their neighbors). If I had died every time I said / done something stupid I would have had a very short life.

It's just so depressing people have to die because so many can't see what is common sense to us.

That is just a cop out. If you ban them, you take them out of the public arena. Credit card companies surely must have details on purchases made from 'Joe's Gun Supplies' etc. You can trace purchases if you want. You can ban cash purchases. Communities/police already have a lot of knowledge about current gun owners. Gun stores must have CCTV. Stores must have their 'regulars' that visit frequently.

Their must be membership groups/forums/clubs. That would be a good place to start. You can outlaw advertising. You can restrict where guns are sold. Cops can actually do their jobs and do random searches (yeah it would be an outrage for white folk), like they do for drugs etc. You can have amnesties or buy backs. Every one knows someone with a gun. For the greater good of their country they can report them anonymously. Their can be stiffer penalties for possessing them. People won't be so brazen about possessing them. They would only have to be seen once with a gun then you have them.

If America really cared, they could easily take out half to two-thirds of all guns straight away.

In the UK, it is illegal to sell, buy or carry certain banned knives and you have to be over 18 to even buy one in a store. It's also an offence to carry one on your person. Doesn't stop knife crime as everyone has a kitchen but we're not going to make it easy either.

Anything has to be a start. All we hear are the same old excuses.

You can buy an Ar-15 in Walmart, no probs, but if I want to visit the US for holidays they want access to all my social media passwords at the airport control. Oh, and the "feck" word is peep-ed out in US televison.

In 300 years in school books they will wonder what primitive neanderthals we used to be.

It won't be easy so let's not bother.
