Gun control

Just like Trumps presidency, that's indredibly sad and kinda funny at the same time. This past year has really opened my eyes as to how very different we Europeans are to Americans.
I went to uni with quite a few Yanks, they reasoned and seemed like your average European.
This forum has opened my eyes to the madness of that country. In a lot of ways, they resemble a third world country in their reasoning and politics.
I'm looking forward to going next year. Be been before.

There's a lot of racist ignorant bastards for sure. But there's also a lot of really nice enlightened people too. For every Trump you have an Obama.

You must consider your clientele.

You went to uni with smart folks.

Politics here caters to the lowest common denominator.

It's generally a daft but nice place with friendly people, from my experience.
There's always a hint of not quite being fully aware of the wider picture if you get in discussions with them about anything though.

My last experience with an American was in France the other month. Dead dead nice older guy from California, seemed intelligent, invested in eco technology and the like. Then bam, eventually told me he agrees with a lot of Trump's ideas and backed it up with a quote from the bible.

The National Rifle Association says it is opposed to new legislation in the US Senate and the House that would ban the production and sale of "bump fire stocks"

"The ATF should review bump-fire stocks to ensure they comply with federal law," said Jennifer Baker, spokeswoman for the Institute for Legislative Action at the NRA, referencing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. "We oppose the gun-control legislation being offered by Senator Feinstein and Representatives Curbelo and Moulton. These bills are intentionally overreaching and would ban commonly owned firearm accessories."

Looks like the NRA have went from "How dare you! It's too soon since this tradgedy to talk about Gun Control!" to "Sorry, already forgot about Vegas!" in the space of a week.

This. The United States is basically two countries in one. Thank Grant for reconstruction.

However, yea, it's two countries. There is a socially conscious half, who are guided by logic and reason. Then there is a theocratic half, which is guided by hocus pocus and superstition, and this half also tends to harbor the majority of the racists too.

It's bizarre.

Sticking this here rather than starting new thread. I know there are few others from Tampa area here. We're going through a bad time. The neighbourhood I live in, Seminole Heights, has had 3 murders in the last couple of weeks, and Police have linked them. Serial killeresque, pretty scary. Aside from this, we had a 4 injury shooting at the weekend just outside Seminole Heights at Robles Park, and seems to have been another one last night. Police have been advising people not to go out at night, or alone. Which is sad, because SH has a very up and coming social community with bars and restaurants opening all the time. There is even a Brit bar opening this Friday.

It's a crazy world :(

Seems bizzare but apparently it's right:

I guess it would have to be down to gangland issues and/or the remaining influence of paramillitary organisations. If nothing else there's bound to be more of a structure in place in terms of criminals actually getting access to firearms.

Exactly. Part of the "troubles" infrastructure is still in place and there are more illegal weapons floating around in Ireland than on most other European places.

3% of people owning 50% of guns throws the entire gun argument out of the window.

Constitutional right to have arms was written in a time when that at most meant a flintlock and some dodgy shotgun. These days people own full blown tools of war.

He claims to own atleast 2-3 million in assets.. Is selling guns so profitable?? How did he make so much money!! WOnder what the margin is on each gun sale.. Must be atleast 50%..

You know when people say they have no words?........................

Despite all the weapons and warnings, Bernstein says no one has ever been killed or even injured on his property. With one profound exception.

In 2012, his wife, Terry Flanell, 51, was accidentally killed by a smoke bomb on the property while filming a reality-TV pilot for the Discovery Channel.

“One of the smoke containers turned into a rocket and went right past me and through her and killed her,” Bernstein said

Wow :(

I think certain people at the top want guns banned in the US, and that is the kind of people who have the money and sit at the better table way above the likes of Blair, Brown, Cameron, May or Clintons, Trumps and even the Bushs who are a powerful family with infleunce (I mean two Bush's were selected, sorry lol, I mean elected for the white house).

A lot of media stories use the tragic shootings of people to push this agenda. I think it will go like the film Demolition Man, guns bannged or only in museums one day, a lot of media will push for it, driven by those people at the top who don't want poor people, IE working class in the states, to have guns. People are a hell of a lot easier to control if they have bats or knives and not guns.

Wasn't the original reason for the USA having guns in the first place to defend against tyranical governments, not actually to defender against burgulars or car jackers or even people with a loose screw wanting to blast up a school or cinema?

I think guns should stay, in a country with guns, I'd like a gun to defned my family, property or stop people doing things like this if I was at a concert.

I live in England, UK, guns like that have always been bannged here, and yet people are still getting run over, bombed at concerts, beheaded and all sorts. On top of this, the likes of London, Nottingham, Manchester has real bad gun crime, even kids carrying guns and shooting each other. Again, guns aren't available over the counter or on order here, never have been.

Banning guns in the USA won't save anything, and its just the stories with heavy media presence making you think that it will. Let those decent people who want them, have their guns. Bad people will always find a way to get guns anyway, or just use another vehicle or weapon to kill, you can't ban everything to protect people and remember, most people are decent people, most of the time these things don't happen.

Imagine how much higher the death count would be during attacks like the Westminster atrocity if guns were available over the counter. There were 6 deaths including the perpetrator. At the Finsbury Park Mosque attack there was 1 death. At the London Bridge attack there were 11 deaths including three perpetrators.

In comparison 27 died in Sutherland Springs while at least 59 did in Vegas.

Holy shit
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

A 12-year-old Jacksonville, Florida, boy is facing manslaughter charges after he shot a girl in the side of the head with a shotgun, according to the arrest warrant.

The boy, who was 11 at the time, grabbed a shotgun that was hidden beneath the house, authorities said. He brought it inside and playfully pointed the gun at everyone in the room, according to the report.

Witnesses told police that he pointed the shotgun at Ra'Mya and said, "Say I won't."

Someone in the room replied, "You won't," and the boy shot Ra'Mya in the head, the warrant says.

In any other country on Earth, I would assume that was fake news. That he is an opposition plant, paid to make the gun lobby look silly.

His point on checks being worthless because anyone can snap at any time is both 100% correct, and the single biggest reason normal people should not be allowed to own and carry weapons in a civilised society.

Well his collection is probably worth a bit of money. Probably has gone up in value over the years. A large chunk of land which is also probably worth quite a bit more now than when he bought it. And yeah if you run a successful business you can make money.
