Graham Potter | turns down Ajax job

Forget the noise in here, like I had to, what's your gut feeling telling you Pat?

I don't think Potter will get his P45 just yet, for reasons stated by others. I don't think these owners (people say Boehly all the time but Eghbali is right there with him all the time) will want to be seen as impatient owners after prising him away from Brighton. It could also just be that they believe in his ability as a coach to turn this around, which I agree with. But even if they felt he had fallen well below the level that is even remotely acceptable, which he has, with the season totally over for us anyway, I don't see why they shouldn't give him the remainder of the season to show even a little bit of something, anything, to justify keeping him for next season.

From the outside looking in, I'd attribute their poor season so far to Boehly rather than the manager(s)

Seems a complete tit

The problem is, you can give him this season as a gamble.

Giving him this season means most likely he will get the window and pre season? If so, he has to deliver because then sacking another manager in the middle of a season is again writing another season off?

It's a gamble, you're right but it's one I'm personally willing to take. It sounds crazy at the moment, I know and I know full well I might quite literally be the only Chelsea fan left who still believes in Potter but I do.

I always rated Potter at Brighton, thought he is a coach who can drill a system into place.

I just feel that for him to have any success, they need to start making decisions on players now. There is no point players like Ziyech, RLC, Pully turning up to pre season next season if they are not part of the project.

Chelsea have to find a way to get rid of alot of them giving Potter a decent size squad to work from and implement his tactics and methods.

I'd be inclined to agree with you. I agree with others, i think from Potters point of view it was a daft time to take the jump to a big club, and Chelsea in particular, just because of the timing with the new ownership and because of the of the squad setup, but he might have seen it as a now or never time.

The ownership need to help him, and that means cutting the squad to a much more reasonable size, and just giving him a couple of top players in positions you need. I feel sorry for him, because he's walked into a perfect storm of bloat, discontentment and owners too keen to make an impression in the market. Its almost like he's punch drunk, and it's uncomfortable even for a rival fan to see.

I think Chelsea were in for a poor season, regardless. People go on about Tuchel, but there were a lot of signs in the last few months of last season that this was going to happen. Lo and behold, it did.

Tuchel would have been sacked this season at some point, whether earlier or later in the season. It was inevitable as the signs were there for all to see; his time had come to an end.

I mean I wonder why Tuchel is rated so highly, yet Di Matteo isnt. He did the same thing, came in and won the CL.

Tuchel is massively overrated by alot of people, he is another defensive manager that has no attacking plan.

Tuchel is massively overrated. Boring football and last year they finished a lot closer to 5th then they did 2nd. And they only did that because Tottenham, Arsenal and United seemed to be going out of their way to avoid the top 4.

You are both doing the massive underrating here. Di Matteo hasn't done anything in his entire career to suggest his CL success was anything more than the world's luckiest 6 months stint... Tuchel has won trophies before Chelsea, he did it for Dortmund and he did it for Paris, and he also took Paris to their first ever CL final (they had not reached a smeifinal since 95...). Even good managers who make CL finals can struggle to repeat that with other clubs... It took him 12 months to mange that.

That is the most misinformed and ridiculous comparison I have ever seen, had to do a double take to see if I even read it right.

Under Di Matteo we got unprecedented rub of the green, if there was any luck atall involved in Tuchel's triumph it was the opposition getting lucky we didn't beat them by more.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt you didn't watch many or any games of our both runs because if you did and still drew that comparison then feck me.

I can understand wanting to avoid the Europa Vauxhall Vanarama Conference league but I'd definitely rather be in the Europa League than nothing at all.

That season we had no european football under Van Gaal was shite because of how little we played.

Not for me.

With all the respect in the world due to her men's football and women's football even at elite level is a bigger gap than PL and non league.

Plus we absolutely dominate at women's level, would rather leave her and them be.
Fair point mate, respect your opinion on this, keeping separation makes sense. They've got themselves in a right state, I just know I couldn't do that job no matter what they paid!

Gonna be honest. At this point it might be a good thing that we play as little as possible with the absolute shite they’re giving us.

Just found out today that Potter has managed longer than Ten Hag. Ignoring his 3 year gig with Leeds Carnegie in 2008, Potter started with Ostersund in 2011. Ten Hag started with the Go Ahead Eagles in 2012.

Misled by media narratives and PR again.

I remember seeing some opinions that preferred Potter to Erik as he was more 'Prem-proven', whatever that was supposed to mean.

Who misled you? Have there been articles stating otherwise?

After Mourinho's meltdown season (15/16) we finished tenth and had no European footy for Conte's first season. The result for the following season was a title win with 93 points and I would put having no European football as one of the main reasons for that. Almost the same XI for every game can give you the kind of consistency you often need to win titles.

However if it's shite it's still shite no matter how much or how little football is being played, case in point you lot under LVG.

Propaganda from who? For what reason?
By the British media to back a local. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but it's good to be aware. There's also a likely, typical scenario where his PR team facilitates/creates this positive feedback loop by pumping out stories and the media choosing to reproduce them and not be more discerning, analytical or irrationally hostile. If he were Qatari...

Anyway, been in the media industry for over a decade and this is just the reality of modern day journalism across all verticals.

I have no idea what this has to do with you only finding out today that Potter has been a manager for a long time and blaming the media for it. It's been out widely reported on since he took over at Brighton.

You're not going to win the title next year. It's a very different league compared to 2016-17 & the competition is far more intense. Top4 should be achievable with the right manager.

You're making a different point.

Yep, he took PSG to a final in one off games because 2 legged ties were not around. Tuchel won the Ligue 1 which is very difficult to win right?

Then he finished 3rd with Chelsea, was drawn into a top 4 race with the most inconsistent teams.

That is why I think he is overrated as a manager. When he left chelsea, he still did not have a style of play.

They are deluded if they think he will suddenly win over 80 pts next seasons.

Long he may stay.

Winning the title next season was not at all what I was going for.

Just tried to dismiss the idea that having only the league to play for is somehow a bad thing for team performance. Having no European football is absolutely a bad thing for club finances but as far as league performance goes things get much easier if you only have the league and domestic cups to worry about.

But yeah, top4 should be our aim next season.

It’s terrible with your squad size. If anything you need more games. You’re then down to bad cup draws leaving you one game a week (at best, you may even have 2 games in a month with fixtures getting cancelled due to others doing well in cups)

Indeed. They have been bad for a long time (last 15 games form below, Chelsea have scored the fewest goals of any Premier League team during that time):

But it is really since the turn of the year, where Chelsea spent more money than any club, in any transfer window, in any year in the history of football, that they really started to become truly terrible.
That's crazy. Almost half a season of relegation form.

Where did you find the table for the last 15 games, out of interest?

Current squad size is absolutely too big for no European football, but it will be trimmed down considerably for next season.

I have no idea why everyone just keeps assuming we're going to keep a 30+ man squad for next season too. The current state of the team is just a result of a big squad rebuild having started in the January window instead of waiting till the summer and clearing space for the new arrivals first. Of course it's going to be a buyer's market and some deals will no doubt be bad for the club financially when everyone knows we need to have a clear-out but there will undoubtedly be lots of players leaving regardless.

If we don't qualify for European football next season, a squad of around 22-23 players should be the way to go.

Chelsea fans, if the issue isn't Potter then what is it?

I know that's a rather simplistic way of looking at things but your club has always fired managers and turned things around quite quickly, regardless of how bad you were under previous management.

I would argue that United's insistence on giving unqualified managers more time and backing than they deserved only made things worse. If we'd have been more trigger happy we wouldn't have spent so many years floundering.

Given the squad Chelsea will have next year (Nkunku to come in as well remember), a decent manager could easily get them firing with a good pre-season under their belt in fairly short order, especially if no European distractions. A title shot is not completely out of the question with that squad.

They dug into the stats of that comparison on the second captains podcast. Arteta’s record in his shitty first season at Arsenal was MILES better than Potter at Chelsea so far.

Arteta won the FA cup in his first season as well didnt he?
