Graham Potter appointed Chelsea manager

He's a good forward thinking manager but learning the hard way. It'll do him good.

I said this about him in Jan 2020. He was having a tough time and being booed by the Brighton fans.

He’s definitely learnt and adapted since which is a hallmark of a top coach.

Not sure where he’ll go next but he’ll do very well.

He really should stay at Brighton for now.

All the hard work over last three years and all the frustrating runs and finally it's all clicking into place. I assume they're finally performing to their xG which has had them top 6 last two seasons I think.

Trossard is wonderful player to watch and really should be starting for Belgium in world cup, Alexis Mac could very well make argentina squad.

No reason at all why they shouldn't be fighting for 7th or even higher.
They will be up top fighting for the EL spots for sure, sort of like WHU but with much better brand of football. Potter really is a great manager and Brighton looks just like a great team but perhaps the players themselves grow in the system very quickly. If they can get a proper striker and a CB, they will surprise many top teams too.

After getting E10H, it will be annoying to watch Potter going to the likes of Spurs.

Enough of this Gram Pothead giddiness. Quintessential English gaffer who has reached his ceiling at a side like Sea Gull Brighton. Best he could hope for would be the English national side to become a Southgate mark II. Stupid beard and all. He'll embarrass himself at a top PL outfit.

Leicester? Would he take that job at this point?

Doesn't seem to need 100m players to do his thing.
Yeah, compare his three years building a team at Brighton with Ten Hag's three months at United where the expectations are much higher

I'm surprised that some people are genuinely sad that United didn't take a chance with him even now when ETH is showing he's capable as our manager. I know some of you are sentimental but come on. He's done well at Brighton but the highest position he's ever taken them is 9th, and there's nothing in his career that suggests he can manage a top club.

"Ah, but we won't know until he tries." True, but some of you are acting like it's a certain thing because he's a Fergie regen or something.

How is this guy not at a bigger club. Hopefully, when he does decide to move, he gets it right.

Because in his three seasons as a Premier League manager (after reaching the dizzying heights of 10th in his single Championship season with Swansea) his Brighton team have come 15th, 16th and 9th place.

Watch him go to City now and win the quadruple, and @Solius will be in here to make fun of me.

Such a shortsighted view considering he's been pretty good outside of Brighton too and has always made his teams play way above their level of talent. Ole finished pretty high compared to Potter, doesn't mean he's anywhere near his level as a manager.

I wish more people thought like this.

Coaching at a big club is not as easy, throw in european commitments midweek and higher expectations and watch shit hit the fan more often than not.

And all this ignores that the bloke had what was basically a real life FM save where he took a team from a town the size of Altrincham in the middle of fecking nowhere in Sweden from the 4th tier of Swedish football to the Europa knockout rounds.

Even saying "the highest he's taken Brighton is 9th"... it's literally the highest finish they've ever had in their entire 120-odd year history as a football club. What more is he realistically supposed to do?

Calling him nailed on better than Ten Hag is, of course, very silly, but I can't think of anybody who hasn't already managed a big club who has done more to earn the chance to do so than Potter.

Why exactly?

Surely people can appreciate a manager without derailing the current one in charge?

He's a Brighton fan. He wants people downplaying Potter so they can keep him.

Such a shortsighted view considering he's been pretty good outside of Brighton too and has always made his teams play way above their level of talent. Ole finished pretty high compared to Potter, doesn't mean he's anywhere near his level as a manager.

To be fair, Ole did very impressive stuff in Norway, and won the U23 league at Man Utd (check out how often that happens), which, even if what Potter did with Österås is even more impressing, by many is dismissed out of hand because it’s at a lower level. Ole is ridiculed for his Cardiff slot, while he didn’t really do significantly worse with that welsh club than Potter did with his (10th in the Championship). Then Ole has United at 5th, 3rd and 2nd while Potter has Brighton at 15th, 16th and 9th. There’s nothing wrong with arguing that is more impressive regarding the expectations etc, but the main argument remains - there is nothing self evident that a Moyes (consistently punching above weight with Everton) or a Lou Macari (took Swindon to three consecutive promotions) will translate that to a club expected to compete at the very top.

And it marks the tendency to overplay or downplay achievements according to hopes and fears.

I'm absolutely happy with Ten Hag. But I would like to have seen what he could have done here with us. I was all for giving him a chance when we were looking at a new manager. I think Brighton are pound for pound the best in the league at the football they play. I can only imagine what he'd be doing for a club that doesn't lose their best players and has a bigger budget.

His CV is seriously impressive in it's own right.

I guess this will be our home for a while :wenger:

He’s be mad to join right now. His play is very specific and would need time to implement. Ten Hag needed 200m to get close to the style he wants. No way Potter walks into this without a pre season etc

Hopefully, he turns them down.

He'll be great in the long term but probably won't do much better this season than what Tuchel would've done if he had stayed.

It's a good move for Potter if he believes in himself. The question is however is he a better manager than Tuchel. Only a few managers have managed to transition from mid table teams to those challenging and to my knowledge I think Poch is the only recent example who's made some measurable success at it.

Brighton will have a hard reality check. Especially the fans booing last season, but you never know with football they could appoint someone who's unknown and does a decent job like Viera has for palace. I don't think Potter to United before ETH signed was feasible either, he still has much to prove. There's a day and night difference in pressure and expectation at the big clubs.

Hope he doesnt go there - not just because I think he is a superb manager, but because I look at Chelsea and I see a total mess and it would likely be a crap move for him.

Hope Chelsea don't get him. I really like Potter.

TeamPoch

I really enjoy Potter as a manager and would definitely prefer him to sit this one out and take on his next club after the end of a season, instead of during one when things are falling apart

Nobody is going to turn down an approach by a club like Chelsea to stay at Brighton. It all depends on whether that clown Boehly thinks he's a high profile enough manager I guess.

The same was said about Ten Hag. And here he is.
Yep, so many on the caf said he wouldn't come to United bla bla

If Chelsea approach Potter, he goes, its simple as that.

Ten Hag didn’t come during the season and he was able to bring all his coaches etc.

United ran a lengthy process hence the hire of an interim. They have also been gutting the backroom set up.

Chelsea don’t even have a DoF yet?

Methinks Potter should stay put and wait for the Newcastle United job; it's an eminently attractive proposition with the near future in mind...
  • The chance to build a real legacy, instead of being part of an everchanging carousel of managers.
  • It's a developing project so the pressure would be lower and he could properly instill his ideology.
  • The ownership could spend ungodly amounts of money once the revenue streams are “fixed”.
  • His former Director of Football (Dan Ashworth) is already there, so some familiar structure are in place.

Also his tenure at Brighton looks like it could peak this season so it would be a shame for him to walk away at this point.

Yes but the circumstances were different.

Ajax were 6/6 wins in the CL and in a title race.

I guarantee if Potter was in Europe or in a title race, he wouldn't leave.

Chelsea, do not have any of those but he will be allowed to bring whoever he wants from Brighton too.

He will take the job. Not often top jobs become available.

It's a sensible shout in fairness. Will be interesting to see how much faith Newcastle will put in Eddie for the time being.

The circumstances and comparison with Ten Hag are totally different which is my point.
