Graham Potter appointed Chelsea manager

He will take the job. Not often top jobs become available.
Pretty much every 2 years at Chelsea and Spurs. He can wait and yes Newcastle would be a much better ramp for him if he wants to land a top 4 job. Or make Newcastle one of them long-term.

Who is to say those teams are interested in two years? A couple of years ago Poch could walk into any top club. That's how these things are. If he has a chance now, he is going to take it.

If I'm Potter I'm not taking the Chelsea job, the squad doesn't have the type of players that thrive under him. The club will sack him before giving him time.

He should wait for the Liverpool, Arsenal, City job. One of which I'm pretty sure will be available within the next 18 months or so.

Will he take the Chelsea job considering he’s literally the odds on favourite to succeed waistcoat as the next England manger?

Think he'd be mad to go for it, he'll get the boot as soon the players lose interest in playing for him, like they do everyone else.

Why does he need to take a "ramp" option to land a top 4 job in the future, when he's potentially got a chance of one now though?
Because this current Chelsea gig looks a bit iffy. Better players, better pay, definitely. The environment though looks a bit weird. This window could be an anomaly and a way to try and make a good impression. Or it might be how Boehly intends to manage the club.

He's said before he likes working at clubs because of the day-to-day interactions which he wouldn't get working for a national team. No way he holds out for the England job.

The circumstances and comparison with Ten Hag are totally different which is my point.

Seems pretty similar to me. Both are managers on the rise going from a nice, settled team tailored to their tastes and with stable and effective club structure behind them, to a shambolic, patchwerk team devoid of confidence and with structure in great turmoil. In our case also ran by confirmed clowns, as jury is still out on Boehly and his cohorts. In fact this argument would hold even more water regarding Ten Hag because Ajax are a higher quality team than Brighton. They attract good talent and play in the CL. But he did take the United job anyway.

A confident manager with just the right amount of crazy in him will look at such a job as a challenge. Remains to be seen if Potter is such a manager. If he is a sensible manager he would go to Newcastle. But if he is confident in his ability and believes the time is right I could see him taking this job. Only hindsight will tell after that.

I am not sure there’s any risk in him taking this job. Worst case he’ll get a multimillion pound pay-off and walk straight back in to a Brighton level job, even Newcastle as long as Ashworth is there.

Well yeah because Levy dropped him and he chose the most toxic situation in football at PSG. Good chance this Chelsea side would be "his PSG".

Really? There's atleast 1 or 2 a season....
How often is it the case that Mauricio Pochettino of all people is seen as the strongest candidate for a top job though? We're in an unusual position right now where all the good coaches are spoken for and Zidane seemingly has no interest in any job aside from Real and France.

For instance, if EtH got the bullet tomorrow, Tuchel would probably be our next hire. It's called the managerial merry-go-round for a reason and Potter may not get a better opportunity than this in the future when more proven (but not necessarily better) managers become available to top sides.

Wouldn't blame him for taking the job. He's made an even bigger impression this season so far so I can see clubs wanting him to manage their team.

Just don’t see how Brighton would allow him to go, they’ve started the season so well and who are they going to replace him with?

As I said. The circumstances and timing are totally different.

It would be a bad move for him to go to Chelsea. He needs time to work and he will be lucky to even survive to the end of the season under Boehly.

There's a good chance he will be offered the England job and maybe the City job at some point in the next 10 months - they are both better prospects for him.

I think I read he has a fixed compensation figure in his contract so if that’s true they won’t have a choice. I do pay a little visit over to North Stand Chat when they go through tough times and seems they’d like either Ange Postecoglu or the chap from Bodo Glimdt. Who knows though.

That would make more sense regarding a fixed compensation figure.

If Potter has a release clause, I can't imagine he would turn Chelsea down. It's still early enough in the season for it not to be a write off. If he doesn't, it's tough trying to steal away a currently employed manager.

They are truly worried over there.

I know, it’s great :D

I do however retain some self-awareness, the reality is that if Vieira goes on a similar trajectory then before long it’ll be us in this situation. It’s the reality for any aspirational midtable club that experiences any modicum of success.

That prospect makes me even more determined to enjoy their tears right now

Why would he turn down a chance like this?

brighton could never pay the same wages and it would also put an elite club on his CV.

No brainer to me.

But obviously he will need to spend a shiteload of money to fix the squad. It will take time for him to mold them into a unit like he has at brighton.

Time which he may or may not have.

Think, he won't leave mid season. He won't be short of offers end of season either.

Makes a lot of sense for both parties. For people saying Potter should reject it, let’s face it, he’s a real deal only on paper as of now. Getting the move to Chelsea validates him and puts him in the top tier. He will have resources and a squad which should be easily be CL level. If, rather when, he does get sacked, it wouldn’t be the end of him like it hasn’t been for a number of managers who have been sacked by Chelsea.

As Steve Parish also said, you don’t approach a club about their Manager unless you’re sure they’re up for talking about your vacancy

At this rate pretty much every club would wait for him. Liverpool, City, Spurs , Newcastle (with his buddy) all are very realistic options in the next couple of years.

If you don't succeed at your first big job it can prove very hard to get another one.

He might be nervous about all the uncertainty with Chelsea, new owners, strange looking squad, Abramovic leaving them could prove to be a bit like Fergie retiring for us if not handled properly. He could look at someone like Moyes and have serious doubts.

I think he would be a big success there but he would be absolutely right to wait to have doubts.

Didn't he refuse to even speak to Spurs last time they were looking for a new manager?

From who exactly? Say Chelsea get in a guy they like, which top club would he go to at the end of the season? United, no. City, no. Pool, no. Spurs? Maybe if things implode with Conte. Newcastle? Yeah possibly but that’s not in the same bracket.

Completely disagree with posters saying it's a no brainer for him to move to Chelsea. He's got something good going on with Brighton, brought some exciting players in and I'd stick around for a while longer and see how far he can take them this season.

Chelsea look like a mess with regards to the players they've lost, the players they've brought in and the new owner looks like a joke.

Like where? Spurs wont sack Conte unless things go tits up. Same with Liverpool and City. Arteta ain't leaving Arsenal, they are happy playing good football. Utd? Same as Conte.

This is a huge opportunity for him.

*checks poster location*…ah, Sussex.

Despite the banter I do have some level of sympathy for Brighton and agree it’s not a given that he takes the job. I also think Brighton will appoint a top replacement if he goes, they’re sickeningly well run these days. I much preferred the Withdean days.

He'll do very well especially if they put the right structure around him.

West Ham is also a fitting club for Potter. As long as he’s appointed next year and given a full pre-season.

Yeah it's the sad state of football hierarchy, but at the same time, Brighton will just turn around and poach someone else's manager
