Oh wow, I didn't know he was with them in those years too.

Despite his recent final 'misses', I do remember him coming off the bench to make an important contribution to one of the title wins on the final day of the season, think it was under Capello.

I don't think turning down this sort of money is nearly as surprising as some think. Look at it this way (this isn't specifically about Higuain, but any top player):

Say you can earn £10m a year playing for a top European side, or £40m a year in China. Either way you are unbelievably, preposterously rich. So what do you spend all that money on? Some houses, some cars... yeah sure, no problem. But what else enhances your life? Living somewhere you want to live? The chance to to get something that money literally can't buy... the glory of winning trophies in Europe's top leagues?

Or to put it another way... if money was no object, and it was possible to buy yourself the chance to win the Champions League with United, how much would you pay? Is it that mad for a guy who has well over a hundred million pounds to his name to pay tens of millions for that opportunity?

Don't forget though, he has to live off what he earns for the rest of his life off 15 +/- years of wages. Don't get me wrong, footballers wages are insane and theyre filthy rich as you say but their will be tremendous drop off in income after retirement. Puts it into a bit more perspective thinking of it like that I'd say.

Hats off to him I say.

Where is this money coming from?
Part of me thinks this is just some scheme to hide money. XI Ji Ping has been clamping down on corruption.

Asia is a big growing football market, obviously the big foreign clubs like ourself are trying to get a foothold there, but so are the domestical teams. I think they all have very rich chinese investors that want to set up the early powerhouses in that growing market and the best way to grow for them is to attract star players. Which isn't easy because who would want to play in china ? For the glory or the challenge you don't, big culture shock aswell, but every obstacle can be routed by a big paycheck.

Would not be surprised if in say 10 to 15 years, the chinese league will overshadow most of the mediocre european leagues and could be genuine contenders for global media exposure to the big leagues. That is why it is so very important, the club gets a strong foothold in that asian market.

It will still be there for him in 2 years. Arsenal / PSG won't be.
I remember reading that Chinese squads are limited to two non-Asian players. Unless that changed very recently there aren't that many jobs available there. They don't want to just have a league with foreign stars, they want to improve football at base level in China and are hoping the Chinese players learn from the internationals, hence they will limit the number of spots.

Depending on who takes them and on the profile of the player two years from now he might not get something on that level ever again. That said, I'm a bit doubtful unless I see some kind of official confirmation of this proposal.

Surely that amount can't be right? Seriously, where are the Chinese getting all this money from?

I don't see why it would be that surprising for him to turn it down. Yes it's crazy money but really he's been earning crazy money for a good while now. Even now he's earning more in a year than many wealthy people in their lifetime. Not 40m or close but still.. not everyone has a use for that much money. I have a lot less and still I'm already at a point where I won't add another 5 hours a week even if it would double my salary or even go to a place I don't like.
If you have what you want and more money just equals a higher number on your bank account, other things are far more important than money. And I'd expect football to be his passion, so he'd give up on what he probably wants most just to get more money.

He is 28. He probably wants to give a good go at winning more trophies/score more goals in Europe. China can come back in 3/4 years time.

Stupid not to take it.

Anything can happen in football. He could get a horror injury and have his career ended tomorrow.

That amount of money takes his wealth from one level to a complete new level.

He could of done it for two years and came back to Europe if he'd wanted. Someone else will take that money and it's no guarantee it'll still be on the table for him later.

Side note - would not be surprised if Messi ends up in China in next year or two.

Higuain: Choking > Trophies.

Jokes aside if he actually rejected that kind of money, huge respect.

Don't believe for a second he would turn this down if there was any truth in it.

Ultimately you're kicking a bag of air made of animal byproducts around some grass with
21 other blokes, would it really matter to you how many trophies you had? It's us in the crowd, with less glamour in our lives that take it all more seriously.

Oh, it's where the Chinese Wall ends! But yeah, Qinhuangdao looks pretty depressing

I don't really know much about Qinhuangdao but a lot of the cities in Hebei are badly polluted, it'd also be freezing in the winter although the football season is in spring and summer.

Tax rate is 45% for the kind of money he would be on for those who are asking. The reports on Chinese websites and message boards all quote Sky so I don't know how true it is. It wouldn't surprise me, the owner is a billionaire and it'd be a very big name to bring to China.

Mad respect to him. It shows true passion for football. I wish other players such as Hulk or Cavani would have acted similarly.

I'm honestly surprised that there are so many people saying he is an idiot for not taking the offer.

As someone has already said, he can earn £10-15 million a year playing for a top European side competing with the best players in the world. What difference would it make to earn double or triple that wage if it meant you had to play in a nothing league with mostly average players? Not to mention the complete culture shock.
He isn't going to get to the age of 50 and start having to wash cars at the traffic lights because of the £20 million a year he lost out on by not taking this deal. There has to be a point in the life of these footballers where once they have their giant houses, supercars and yachts in Monaco harbour then there isn't the need to keep pressing for more and more money.

I can kind of understand it from Pelle as he was never a player that was going to earn £14 million a year (his wage in China) playing in a big league. According to figures I've found he earned just £154,000 a year playing for Feyenoord in 2014, and in his last season for Southampton was on £1.85 million a year. Whilst still an obscene amount of money for us regular people, he is already 30 so realistically he would have earned less in his whole career (if he stayed in England) than Higuian will do in a single year playing for a top European club.

My goodness! This is preposterously insane  if Higuain has been offered £800k a week, I wonder how much they would have offered Rooney

That's just stupid to turn down that kind of money. I can understand if he was playing at a top club like Barcelona or Bayern where he's in with a shout of consistently winning trophies, but he's at Napoli who at best will push Juventus for the title. It also will have no bearing on his international career. Argentina still picked Lavezzi despite him playing in china.

Not entirely sure if it's a footballing over money choice.. More likely an "I'm living in Italy and anywhere else a step down" kind of choice.. Let's be honest - a bit of money and Italy.. Perfection.

Then again..

I have no issue with footballers going to the Chinese League.

I'm all for new leagues and new teams. Plus, the FIFA Club World Cup will actually be better now.

even though it's a tough one, he can still be a millionaire and stay in for some trophies in Europe's best leagues. I mean how much does he earn now? Around 100K per week? He can already buy anything he wants...

Has anyone pointed out the risk of not getting paid in China? Drogba and Anelka both got shafted over. The rule of law is a joke there with the likes of Apple supposedly infringing the copyright of Chinese companies.

Does he have over 100 millions now? Rooney and Ibra (who both had more lucrative contracts and are older) are worth around 115 mil - and they are in the top 5 of richest footballers.

You should consider that 1. Most footballers don't have any real life experience and a ridiculous amount of them end up broke a decade or so after hanging the boots due to bad investments, lack of financial planning and cons. 2. He has to support not only himself, but his whole family and friends- at least it's the case for most successful SA footballers, and he has no real skills, education and experience outside of football

So, in my example I'm looking at a top footballer who could earn £10-20m a year (not top, top like LM&CR, who get more like £60m). You only need one 5 year contract to earn £100m - so maybe double that in your career is reasonable. (I'm not saying they're sitting there with £100m in their bank account, but they have this income).

Yes, he has to support his family - but this is all relative, he can make sure they live very comfortably for the rest of their lives with a couple of million. It's an interesting point though... could you argue that effectively "paying" for the chance of fame and glory in Europe as per my post is the selfish option, and those who take the Chinese bucks are the ones putting their own needs and desires behind those of others?

Despite his recent final 'misses', I do remember him coming off the bench to make an important contribution to one of the title wins on the final day of the season, think it was under Capello.
I'm sure I remember him coming off the bench to score a couple of crackers against Barca in one of Rijkaard's last games. Back in the days where I'd watch Barcelona as much as possible just to get a glimpse of Titi... :(

Reality is going to kick him in the nuts when Wenger refuses to go above 99002/- p/w.

That's just stupid to turn down that kind of money. I can understand if he was playing at a top club like Barcelona or Bayern where he's in with a shout of consistently winning trophies, but he's at Napoli who at best will push Juventus for the title. This.

As @Cal? said there's a high risk with China of not getting paid, be prevented from playing football if there's a conflict and even have to repay huge sums if you put a foot wrong at some point. They also probably aren't paid when injured.

There are numerous examples in China, Russia and middle east of players being shafted. Those contracts look good on paper but are nowhere near as safe as in Western Europe.
