Golf 2023

Yep, happened a few years ago at the Masters. It’s a tradition to hit that shot on 16 during the practice rounds.

It’s not hard to reproduce - you just need some cut spin (left to right v hook spin being right to left - that would cause the ball to ultimately dive into the water as the shot progressed) & a more delofted club in your hand.

You’ll see this recovery shot on tour every now & then, but never to the degree of success as Rahm’s shot.
feck me, I’ve never thought about how the ball spins like that but you’re right. A slice will always spin back where a draw will create forward spin.

what a time to be alive.

I’ll defo turn in to see their US Open at Pebble, I always like to see where the pros play their shots & from what yardage v. where I did. It’s often quite humbling.

LPGA Tour is gonna be stout for the foreseeable future…

I may tune in as well as I read that this will be Michelle Wie West's final tournament before retiring. Damn that sentence makes me feel old.

I’m really enjoying watching the women play Pebble Beach. They can’t overpower it like the men can so they’re playing the course like it was meant to be played.

Yep. Approach shot angles jive with the original architecture, cross bunkers back in play, green size (microscopic) making a difference, basically the intended penal aspect of the course in full effect.

Pebble would have to be lengthened to probably 7500+ yards to have the same effect on the men.

What’s the latest on the PGA/LIV merger?

I thought they were merging though, why would either need to poach?
Anti trust issue raised by the US DoJ. Done probably to preclude any legal hassles later on; it's best to not have a player under contract with one of the parties & not the other.

At least that's what I took from the article, but business shit isn't quite my jam, could be stating it wonky.

Ahh that makes sense actually

Has anyone else here done a wedge fitting recently? The guy I went to said he recommends people bend one wedge down and one up just to give some versatility in the bag around the greens in terms of bounce - so the suggestion for me was a 52 at 10 degrees, a 54 bent to 55 (so 9 degrees), and a 60 bent to 59 (11 degrees).

This makes sense to me on paper and felt good around the chipping green - extra bounce for the bunker or out of thick rough, less bounce for more forgiveness on firm surfaces and for flop shots. Just curious what everyone here things before I pull the trigger!

Feeling the difference in bounce and grinds can depend on your handicap. Your lofts and bounce will probably be good for anyone in the 8-15 bracket id say.

Honestly glad to have that confirmation! I'm about a 12 right now, though work has been hectic for me so haven't played as much as I'd like over the past month or so!

Definitely trust the guy who's fitting me as he's not steered me wrong, just hadn't really heard about people carrying both bouncier and less bouncy wedges in the same bag. I think it makes sense for me though; I'm not prone to chunking or skulling my wedges one way or the other disproportionately I'd say. Thanks for your input!

It’s wise to have different bounced wedges. I always had my 56 Vokey at standard, my 52 Cleveland with minimal bounce, & my 60 Vokey with more bounce. Depending on the lie / bunker firmness, I could always add to / detract from the bounce by opening or closing the club face.

That makes sense! Was it you who linked me to the Vokey wedge bounce guide a few months ago? Found that to be hugely helpful in understanding an element of golf clubs I'd never appreciated before.

More broadly, as I've gotten better I've tried to build my bag in a way so as to have multiple options for different situations, so varying the bounce fits perfectly into that MO. Definitely makes sense of course to adjust bounce via the club face, but it also makes it a bit more idiot-proof for me when distance isn't an issue around the greens.

Thanks as well for responding! Think I'll go ahead and take the plunge!

I think that was me.

If you trust the fitting guy, definitely go with their bounce recommendations.

One route I also went with was to buy used Vokeys from a Golf Galaxy near me. I had back up 56 & 60 wedges with massive bounce or virtually none at all. I was able to pick the Vokeys up for around $30 to $50 a club. It’s a fiscally prudent way to be able to dial in the correct bounce to the different course conditions.

Ah that'd be great! I live in Portugal though and the secondhand market isn't as extensive as in Florida, sadly. There's a Nevada Bob's very close to me which is a blessing, but they don't realistically have the square footage to stock extensive pre-owned clubs which is too bad - among the very biggest downsides to living here, I'm sorry to report!

Bought a few on eBay. There’s always deals on there.

I just don’t see the markup on a new club as remotely justified v. that of a used club. Slap a new grip on a used club & it’s new to the new owner.

I only had two sets of irons my golfing career of 35ish years. Luckily both fit my eye & were eminently playable.

That’s how I justified buying so many used wedges & fairway woods / hybrids, that I saved so much in never changing out my irons I could be a whore for those used clubs.

If you don't mind me asking, what were the green fees at each course?

managed to get out with members at carnoustie and st andrews so those were around 100 each I think, turnberry was close to 400 pounds and troon 250
