Golf 2023

Clark just doesn't look like he will drop enough, while the last couple are too hard for Rory to pick up enough. Clark should see it out

biggest tee-shot of his life on 17

to be followed by an even bigger one on 18

pressure!

Just needed a birdie at some point to put the pressure on but it never happened

Yeah the trouble was bar that sitter he missed on front 9,he hasn't given himself any realistic birdie opportunities. Ball has been too far from the hole so many times in this round

Rory didn't deserve to win to be fair, I don't think he putted any birdies on the back 9 at all and was only 1 behind cos Clark dropped shots on 15 and 16.

Big opportunity missed by Rory, he'll never have a run in against such an inexperienced player in a major.

Happy for Clark though, he deserved it. Glad he won it and not someone like Koepka or deChambeau!

I liked Clarke until I saw he wears mark wahlbergs clothing

Tommy must be kicking himself too that it took him until the final round to arrive at this major. Rory was literally a par on 14 and that relatively easy birdie on 3 from 5th major

He landed the ball much closer than Rory pretty much the whole round so deserved win

I don’t think that is accurate. It appeared that way because he was in trouble more often and kept landing it close when scrambling to recover.

McIlroy hit 15/18 GIR in R4, compared to 12/18 for Clark. The only hole I recall Rory being in any actual trouble was 14, which was the only one where he dropped a shot.

The problem for Rory, as always in the final round of a major over the last few years, was that his putter was stone cold. A average of 2 putts a hole isn’t going to get it done. Knock in the short one on 8 and find one from 20 ft or so somewhere else and he wins. Heck, even birdie all three of the par 5s, which should be relatively straightforward with his power, and he wins by 2.

Notably, it’s a fairly close match to his round at the Open last year, where he hit 18 greens and 2 putted every hole. It’s solid golf but someone near the top of a leaderboard in the last round of a major is probably going to do better.

Rory's never going to win another major is he. Close but no cigar too many times and it'll get in his head. As a final round, 16 pars a birdie and a bogey is steady golf, but you need to turn a couple of those pars into birdies, especially in the final round if you're going to win the big tournaments.

The weird thing is, as disappointing as this is for him, he's actually been getting closer to winning his fifth in 2022 and 2023 than he's ever been. St Andrews last year was the first time he was truly in contention on a back nine on Sunday in a major since 2014. Before that, he basically started every last round either hopelessly far away or with an outside chance at best, except at the Masters in 2018 where he faded early in the round anyway.

So instead of dispiriting, the fact he had another close call like this should be encouraging. He just needs to continue giving himself these chances. This is what he should've been doing every year since 2014 but for some reason never did.

He’ll win at least another couple. It honestly looks like he could benefit sometimes taking more club and slowing it down a bit, he goes full tilt with every club.

Yeah I reckon so too but not Masters

His putting just isn’t good enough for the Masters. The way the course plays off the tee is a dream for him, if he had Cam smith putting he could easily win 5 green jackets.

He doesn't have to be a brilliant putter if he'd improve his wedge game. I think that's his biggest problem.
