Golf 2023

The R&A has its ways
Would be a logistical nightmare & ecologically damaging to play split tees. There's no road infrastructure to accommodate schlepping everyone to number 10 & building any would damage the surrounding estuaries.

Pebble, for example, can do it due to the roadways & wide cart paths that have been there for decades.

Split tees is horrible and shouldn't be a thing in majors. The Open and The Masters are the best precisely because of this. Courses and rounds have natural cadences and messing with the tees messes with that.

Agree. There should only be split tees in cases of weather or darkness.

Whats with the complaints about hole 17
Got a link?

e - no bother, just googled it.

Seems like the size & severity of the green complex is a culprit that has the whiners triggered, especially when the breeze is stout.

Although the green is minuscule v. TPC’s 17, the penal aspect seems similar.

Hope it is windy the next two days!

I’ve been wondering the same. It’s a beautiful hole

Someone said it could ruin someone's career. I just don't understand. People are struggling more with hole 18, why aren't the complaining about it?

Wind looks like it plays a more dominant factor on 17 as opposed to 18, especially with all the bleachers ringing 18 for the second & third shots. But the internal OB is right off the fairway & in play for two shots.

Is it Americans making the critical statements or is everyone whining?

Hoylake basically created their own version of Pebble Beach #7 which for me is perfectly fine, since the course is really only ever used on tour for The Open. The Open should be hard

I don’t mind Harman winning it but I hope he doesn’t go into tomorrow with a lead of 5 shots or more

Yep.

Speaking of Pebble, it underwent a complete revision of the par 3 fifth hole as it was so out of whack compared to the rest of the course. It wasn't a gripe about the hole's penal aspect, just that it was ugly & character less..

Yeah, that'll be the only bummer, everyone else's scores about where they are now and Harman dropping 4-5 today would be great for tomorrow viewing.

If Rahm can navigate these last 2 holes without a bogey he's in a fine position, weather just starting to get a bit dodgy, could make it difficult for the late tees

Young’s basically hitting driver off the deck with that tee height. No idea why the ball was that low, wind isn’t that harsh right now.

Dame Of The Bleeding Obvious After The Event is driving me batshit crazy, I don't get why she's got such a prominent commentary role. Rahm is amazing.

Yeah she's dreadful, I've been saying it for the past year. She doesn't have a clue, she usually says what shot she think they should play because the other shot isn't on, then they play the other shot perfectly. She thinks everyone's game is like hers. Calls 90% of things wrong.

Harman had righted the ship well since those first few holes.

This round (barring something catastrophic) will give him massive confidence teeing it up tomorrow.

I thought Harman would crumble when he went to -9. Solid golf. Need Day to hold his place for quarter odds at 80/1.

Impressive from Harman. Huge pressure tomorrow though with Rahm and Young playing like that.

Golf majors are incredible. This is the biggest day of Harman’s career. He has had no chance to prepare for something like this. He has 2017 at the back of his mind and probably didn’t get much sleep. Now he has to come out and keep his focus on every single shot knowing that this could be the best day of his life.

And knowing that the world's best golfers, the best of whom have already overcome that pressure in their past to win majors, are on fire right behind you.
