Music Glastonbury 2023

Cat Stevens one of the highlights of the whole weekend.

Yes definitely. Without getting carried away, Cat Stevens was quite brilliant. Top man with a top voice.
Now let's see what Elton John sounds like.

I can’t remember Glasto ever being this fecking old. Every other main stage act is someone who hasn’t had a hit in 30 years. Gotta have some of that obviously but it seems really heavy this year

And yet another oap to headline Glastonbury.
Bring back Shirley Bassey. No need for Wellington Boots this time.

Yeah, the Pyramid's where you park your boomers whilst you go off and find some acts who can still sing.

Yeah it's not for me but I am enjoying seeing the flag wankers on twitter bursting a vessel at it.
God yeah,
The 'anti woke' brigade are probably in full force tonight.

Meanwhile, War on Drugs are sounding sublime.

Songs I want to hear from QOTSA tonight:
Feel Good Hit of the Summer
I appear Missing
Go With the Flow
Auto Pilot
Burn the Witch

and I'll be happy.

Obviously you need some of that, but it feels way more than usual this time. If you look at the ‘Headliners & Legends’ tab on iPlayer it’s all ‘legends’ really, and barely half of them would’ve headlined in their prime anyway. Texas and the Lightening Seeds are classic now? FFS.

Saw a tweet saying “imagine if George Formby headlined the Isle of Wight festival in 1970” and… yeah. That’d be weird.

I’m no spring chicken myself, but it’s hard enough for new acts to breakthrough these days as it is without one of the worlds biggest festivals mainly prioritising sing alongs for dads.

Saw Elton John couple of months back at the O2. He was amazing.

That first album has aged very well, I still slap that on quite often.
Yeah, agreed. It's an absolute gem that album,

The second was equally as good. The later albums were more expansive and slightly more electronic in places but still equally brilliant.

Just turned it on and wow…wish I hadn’t

on a serious note, can someone explain how axl’s voice can change this much and is so much deeper than what it was? It’s like it’s lost all power and the tone is so different.

slash brilliant though
When you take lots and lots of drugs and drink lits

Reflective of how the music industry has changed, I think.

Could be a problem that new popular music is not suited to festivals and r&b etc

Just watched Maneskin on catch up. They look so much fun

I am watching BBC2 at the moment. They showed a 23 year old earlier Cat Burns. I was impressed by her. Although they are showing Alison Goldfrapp atm and she is 57.

It's Elton and GNR instead of Taylor Swift or The Weeknd etc though, isn't it? Not instead of some up and coming artist.

I don’t really think that argument has held water since Jay Z headlined… plus a lot of the RnB lot utilise full bands and dancers anyway. It’s absolutely a choice. I’d say it’s as much a problem with how nostalgia driven our culture has become.

Rick Astley asking does anyone want to go back to the 80’s followed by a massive cheer from the wrinkled face audience was bleak.

It will be interesting to see where Glasto will be in the future as for a million different reasons the age of the rock star/rock band is completely dead and so is the idea of a new music genre coming into the mainstream bringing with it new artists.

My guess is it will turn into a expensive care home for a select few artists and people who can afford to watch it.

Sure, but it’s also more like Elton & GNR being bumped for Little Richard and Roy Orbison in 1993.

it’s just a self fulfilling prophecy for newer artists not having the ‘star power’ of older acts.

I don't mind it too much at Glastonbury. Ill sit through sets i wouldnt dream of at any other occasion. Rick Astley has been a real highlight this weekend. I'm sitting here now waiting for Elton and I'm not even really a fan of his.

Yeah, I enjoyed their set. The last track, Under The Pressure, was fantastic.

They're not particularly great or original songwriters. And he can't really sing. But, my goodness, they have the tone down.

Iam the same , Foo Fighters not a fan but thought it was excellent, Cat Stevens only a passing fan but highlight of the weekend, also hearing new stuff like the Garbriels , they were great.
Even had Lizzo on before and it was OK
I like Elton but would not say I was a massive fan but looking forward to it.

I think if we were putting out hopes for modern music in the festival for white public school kids and their grandparents we'd be in trouble definitely but plenty of music has thrived without assistance from the Eavis family before.

I’m fine with Elton’s swansong tbf. It just should’ve been the big finish outlier rather than the 30th headliner that needs ovaltine and oxygen when he gets back to the green room. It’s less special when it feels like a higher end boomer version of those nights hen parties go to to watch 3 members of Steps and half of Blue shuffle their way through Now That’s What I Call 2003.

Also it’s not like weekend festivals for modern music are a massive industry that’s basically replaced clubbing in London or anything. The idea Glastonbury needs to rely on oldies with guitars is weird.

Yeah, perfect for a warm sunset.

Ah here, Lost in the Dream is one of the great modern albums.

I certainly agree that it's way more noticeable than usual. I just quipped to my uninterested kids that the Antiques Roadshow is a fitting BBC1 warm up act. They didn't laugh

45 minutes of Elton then switchover for QotSA methinks.
