Get rid of VAR NOW! We want our game back! (...or not, some are happy)

VAR - Love or Hate?

As a huge MLS fan alongside United, we've had VAR for 2 years over here and it's fecking awful compared to how it's looked in the prem so far. Love that they just show the decision and don't need to have the ref take a look, maybe it's because I'm used to VAR here but it seemed to take a very short time comparatively. Still think they missed that pen on McGinn yesterday in the Spurs-Villa game

It's great for the sport. It helps those buffoon refs massively, which can only be a good thing.

Fort my fantasy league nerves though... It's a nightmare

Sure! But the goal line technology is instant. A VAR review kills the momentum.

Apparently one of the things they do think will improve over time is the speed of the imaging required to make the offside call. How quick it can be or how long that will take to improve I don't know but it's simply a matter of the tech getting better.

I am sorry but you guys are crazy. There have been games and titles decided on BS calls or horrible decisions from referees. VAR brings that integrity into the game.

City vs Spurs in the CL is the perfect example. City would have been in the CL Final if not for VAR.

And the sport would be no better or worse off had those calls been changed.

So you think it is fair if City went to the final off of an offside goal? Because I guarantee 100% of Spurs fans will disagree.

Hence it’s a zero sum game. And without VAR there’s no doubt in my mind that less than 100% of spurs fans would have taken issue with that goal standing over a few millimeters. Why? Because logic dictates City gained no advantage on that goal, even if the rule dictates that it did.

But fortunately much less than 100% of our species need rules to tell them what to think and can do it on their own.

Apologies if this has already been posted, I haven't read the whole thread, but I thought this was interesting. Andy Gray talking about VAR offside decisions, and the important of timing/images per second in determining whether a player is offside. Conclusion: decision will still be subjective, basically the VAR operator's subjective decision on which image to select.

Yeah but the ball hit llorente's hand but that was given, see the disallowed goal by wolves today, still too subjective

It ruined that moment. It’s taking the refereeing out of the game. Blah blah blah.

Have to wonder if that score would’ve been any different if the professional lines people were just allowed to do their job. Maybe the flag goes up on one of those but stays down on the other. Same result, but now we’ve made this system into some sort of god.

Or maybe the linesman would've deemed both offside. Or maybe both good.
But somehow you fail to mention those hypothesis because they don't fit your agenda.

The disallowed goal at Wolves today was a result of new rules that state that any handball that leads to a chance/goal will be an offence, even if it is accidental. You can't really compare that to the Llorente handball when that was judged under a different rule.

Nice try, but instead of saying something just for the sake of it, try making a point next time you pipe in.

Sorry bud. It’s always balanced out over the course of a season. This is some draconian bullshit.

First, what evidence do you have of this other than repeating some dumb argument like a parrot?
Tell me how it was "balanced out" when Chelsea went out to Barcelona? When Ireland was robbed of a World Cup?

My point is you and the rest of the anti VAR brigade take intellectual dishonesty to a brand new level.

VAR is fine for cups and tournaments. 38 game seasons? No thanks.

That, plus for whatever reason they didn't show the ref the good angle where the handball was clear. From the way he explained his decision afterwards it seemed like he didn't see the handball in the first place

Was really weird

I'd forgotten about that. Yeah, the explanation afterwards made it sound like he got the right decision for the wrong reason, it was odd.

Why did the linesman flag there? BAll was played by a Chelsea player ffs. Let var sort out the offsides I thought?

What's the point of this shit if tackles like that Kovacic just did goes without review? Daft clowns.

The linesmen in the PL have been told to flag sooner than we're used to in the CL/WC. The idea is to speed up the game by ensuring that obvious offsides are called straight away.

I think it's a bad idea personally and prefer the way they do it in the CL/WC, for obvious reasons. I get wanting to speed things up with VAR but that's not a good way to do it.

Those don't fall under VAR. Otherwise you'd have to use VAR for everything, and that would be a mess

Linesmen are encouraged to flag the obvious offsides right away everywhere. If it's obvious there's no need to waste time. VAR is meant to help, not replace

Aye, but the PL said before the season that they would be particularly encouraging the linesmen to flag if they thought it was an offside rather than waiting as the WC linesmen are encouraged to do. Just as they said they would be less strict in terms of their interpretation of the handball rule under VAR than the CL/WCs were.

In the end any form of Var will get most decisions right but will significantly reduce the entertainment value of the sport
How? I totally agree with VAR, the only thing I would change is that some “VAR Refere” must make the call always, not needing the match referee to go and see the video himself. But I think it makes the game a little bit more fair.

Give it a few years and it’ll be yellow cards and any throw in / corner kick in the last 5 minutes.
Right now, i'd rather watch a documentary about Spurs new stadium with Glaston that listen to your tedious stupid arguments against VAR.

That seems to be the case in the Premier League, no?

The handball in the Wolves match was done solely by the VAR refs.

Yes, you are right it seems every league has different rules for VAR.

I'm guessing, as with the other VAR systems, that the VAR can recommend that the referee takes a look himself if it's a situation that's a matter of interpretation.

being avoided at all costs though isn't it?

in possibly the only bit of agreement seen so far, I think a decent number of both for/against posters thought a ''God with a Red button'' system was the better idea - on the other thread this was

Have we had any such situations during the opening weekend? Think it's too early to tell if it's being avoided considering I haven't seen any studs up challenges where the ref's given a yellow (for example) go to VAR
