Get rid of VAR NOW! We want our game back! (...or not, some are happy)

VAR - Love or Hate?

I'm not normally resistant to change. I welcome positive change but hate change for the sake of it.

This definitely isn't change for the sake of it. There has been calls for technology in football for years now and we've been building up to it.

Seems all the small thinkers on here have mistakingly thought all along that the results of these matches matter more than the entertainment they provide.

If Barcelona, Madrid, Bayern, AC Milan, United, etc. hadn’t won all those titles some other teams would have and would be making just as much revenue with just as many supporters, etc.

Micro analyzing to ensure proper results will likely just mean the same teams remain at the top, as the predicted results will happen more often. Easier to gamble I suppose.

The rules and technology should be aimed at two more important things in my opinion: not letting the oil clubs buy trophies and eliminating racism from the stands.
good post.

It is one of the most idiotic cliches that exist. Sure, some decisions go in favour of some team, and some against it, but they don't even up. More might go in one way than in other, and consequently, titles, UCL places and relegations might be decided by bad referee decisions.

This “decisions even themselves out over the course of the season” has always been the stupidest cliche I’ve ever seen.

Nah, "what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger" is the stupidest cliche. Like having limbs torn off by a lion can't happen.

Also, "you can't run away from your problems". You can if your problem is an angry lion with no back legs.

Bastard lions.

I’m pro VAR I think but the usage of the system in the city game today was ridiculous. It shouldn’t be used constantly. Fabianski was about 2 inches off his line, it’s going to start affecting how players play the game

What about if the lion has torn off your legs in order to use them to chase after you. Then you're fecked.

The retake of the pen was given for encroachment by Rice. Not the goalkeeper being off his line.

where we still allow our professionally trained officials to do their jobs on the pitch and keep the game moving along.

Except that these professionally trained officials are awful at their job. There’s hardly a game that goes by that a referee/linesman doesn’t make an absolute bowler of a call, especially in England where the referees are probably the worst of any of the top leagues.

VAR is brilliant as you no longer have to hear the fans of the losing club whinge all week, about how they were absolutely robbed.

It will also lessen aggression and violence towards referees.

It’s not meant to be interpreted literally, but there is a lot of merit to “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” If you apply it to an extremely hard task at work, something you didn’t think you were capable of, but you get through it, you come out of it stronger on the other side.

I kind of agree with you. I mean who ever heard of lions getting married.

Feck that cup half full nonsense. You're more likely to do your back in, get a hernia or rupture an ACL than actually get stronger from hard work.

90%+ is awful. What a tough standard.

What about the lions though Cloud7? What about the damn lions?!

Whatever about how the percentages change across the season, I can say with absolute certainty that VAR is here to stay. Aside from the fans currently liking it, the people who run the game are hugely in favour of it and ultimately that's what will tell.

Hopefully it keeps improving as time goes on but ultimately those who hate it will either have to come to terms with it or start watching a different sport. Though finding a sport in 2019 that isn't going to incorporate similar technology on some level will be difficult.

Haha no no man. Once viewing figures go down they’ll soon get rid of it

It won’t get rid of either of those things. Pereyra went nuts at the ref today in the Watford game for a handball. If anything it’s made worse by demands to review it.

I don’t care because in 10 years it’ll just be a natural part of the game and football will feel wierd without it then.

Watching Saturday 3pm games....was amazed Watford didn't get a penalty for handball.

Maybe it was short range but seen them given for far less in CL.

Linesman isnt supposed to flag. They have to let play go and the goal will be checked for offside afterwards. Linesman is only supposed to flag when it is totally clear.

Some linesman (and the lineswoman during Spurs game) didnt get the memo though.

I said the same thing earlier but I've just seen that point corrected: apparently in the PL linemen and lineswomen have been told to flag earlier. The idea being to stop the waste of time that comes from waiting for an obvious offside to be flagged.

Which I think is stupid and something this PL version of VAR can be fairly criticised for.

The PL have said they will be less strict on handballs than is the case in the CL, so expect that discrepancy to continue.

 This is the best post in this thread by a mile

All these replies make me laugh. Doesnt matter if you agree or not, offside is a matter of fact decision. You are offside or you are onside. 1mm 1cm or a metre. Its offside, an the right decision was made.

Its applied fairly to every team and every game dont see how people are crying about this.

I’m so happy it was discovered that one cm of the part of the shoulder Sterling would be allowed to score with, was beyond (in all digital likelihood) some body part of a West Ham defender, so the result was 0-5 instead of 0-6.

Clear and obvious, was it?

Free flowing games like basketball? Wow.
Amazing rebuttal! Forgot basketball was a turn based rpg . Sorry if basketball is not played at a non stop heart pounding pace but that’s the best example of a sport similar to footy (action back and forth with continuous running, also Rugby for that matter) where replay is implemented rather well. Don’t get upset with VAR bc it’s rather sluggish in its FIRST games. More so, let’s give up on the cell phone as it’s the size of a brick.

You should remember that it took a number of years of trial and error, and an improvement in technology before it was widely accepted as a positive thing.
Fair enough, I hope one day VAR offside checks will be just as good and transparent.

O
Has ot though? Apparently the. Technology has this down to fraction of millimetres and this what if scenarios simply haven't happened yet?
This thread is just old men screaming at technology that they haven't been walked through yet.
No complex tech in sports is ever perfect(LBW tracking Cricket, hawk eye tennis).
No one complains about goalline technology ever because it's clear and transparent. Offside on the other hand is a lot more complex and time consuming. It's not hard to see why it has it's detractors, nothing to do with age. Who knows, maybe one day, maybe the tech is so advanced the decisions are instant and rendered 3d models are shown to the viewers right away? I would have no qualms about it being so exacting at that point. But right now, it's far from perfect and seems pedantic to me.

Players will quickly learn what they can’t get away with anymore and adjust, which will soon mean far less VAR interventions.

Eg: I doubt many more players will enter penalty box before penalty kick is taken after todays mistake by West Ham.

I think it will carry on being abit annoying for a month or so, until all the pre VAR cheats are identified and punished, and that will lead to a ‘reset’. Which will be great for the game as it will dramatically reduce cheating and improve fairness.

Oh really? That is how it worked last season in most cases. Keep play going and VAR will sort it out later.

In that case the PL version isnt a good version in my opinion, an incompetent ref/linesman (who are plentliful in the EPL) can still have a big impact on the game. I like it when the play just keeps going, it also stops defenders from stop playing and just put their hands up in the air which i think is really annoying during a match.

Agree.

Though I suspect that the PL would argue that both this decision and the decision to be less strict on handballs are simply a response to the concerns of fans who complained about the game being slowed down and impractical decisions being made. It's a matter of what you prioritise, I guess.

The fussy part of my brain really wishes VAR rules were standardised across all competitions but I guess we'll be looking at years of different and ever-changing tweaks to how VAR works.

Yeah all that diving from Salah last year was fine right?

Relax. VAR called a player being offside because he was factually offside, and they retook the penalty because of some annoying shite that they're trying to stamp out and this is the only way to do it, players will learn how to stay on the line until it's actually taken as they were bending the rules because they knew they wouldn't be punished before. Now they will, every time.
I love VAR but want changes. If a penalty is missed, why re-take it? The goalie was off his line? Yellow card. A player encroached? Yellow card. Neither action has impacted on the weak shot from the spot.

Fans at the match, and neutrals watching on tv, all clearly enjoyed watching Aguero's miserable effort - especially because he ignored Sterling, on a hat-trick. The 'schadenfreud' of the missed spot-kick was ruined by VAR. (which ruled the penalty must be taken again.) This decision 'feels' wrong. It isn't 'in the spirit of the game'. It could also prove an easy way to manipulate the final score results.

Video assistance ought to increase the drama, enhance the spectacle, and provide the betting industry with concrete results. This currently is NOT what VAR delivers.
