Geovany Quenda | Ornstein: Chelsea agree 7-year deal with option of a further year. Will go to Chelsea in 2026.

It’s a shame as he looks a really promising player, it’s mad how many wingers Chelsea seem to keep signing.

I still hope we sign someone at RWB but maybe it will just be Amad and Dalot as the options. We were linked to Wesley Franca who would be a cheaper option, I can’t see us paying a huge fee for Frimpong.
Frimpong has a fixed buy out clause of £35m. Nigh everyone in the EPL can afford him

Didn't see it coming tbh. I wish he just stayed for one more year and then joined us when we're a bit more stable. But I guess there has been business in the background going for a while. Feels like Chelsea is targeting the same players as us nowadays. Caicedo, Lavia, Gusto and now him.

only €40m

Kind of weird, I guess? At first glance their first choice squad only really has Neto, Sancho**, and Madueke as wingers (now that Palmer plays centrally).

But then they’ve also got Mudryk, Kendry Paez, Estevao Willian, George… and then probably a few others.

I guess if he’s joining summer 2026, it gives them more chance to boot everyone? They’re quite good at that.

** hoping that rescinding the contract stuff is nonsensical!

I'd have liked to sign him and to be honest, didn't see this coming. Makes me think Amorim might be satisfied with Amad at RWB with Dalot to back him up and using the summer's budget for elsewhere. If that's the case I'd say a RWB drops quite a bit on the list of requirements this summer.

We definitely couldn't have allowed Sporting to keep him until 2026 so I guess it makes sense. Any indication of what they got him for in the end?

I think we've dodged a bullet. This lad looks like a liability. Sure he can beat a man but he really doesn't look to have any sense thereafter.

Nuno Tavares would be a much better signing but I've just realised he's an Arsenal player. Feck!

Bizarre move from the player's perspective, but also really weird timing for it to be announced.

You'd think a young player with promise would prioritise a move to a team where he'd be fairly sure of regular minutes.

I feel like sjr was already telling us not to expect too much as he’s already paying for Hojlund etc and that’s coming to close to 100m before anyone else

From the player’s perspective, are you really going to bet your career progression on one of the most underperforming and volatile projects in football? The Amorim factor was overplayed. Quenda has to look after himself and there aren’t too many worlds in which his reps will be telling him that going to United is the best way to do that.

We are set to spend 85m on players we have already bought. This year we'll have to make due with pictures of a stadium which is set to built in 5 years time

If Frimpong has a £33m release clause in the summer he should be the best option, right? He ticks all the boxes - quality, isn't crazy expensive, has international experience, he is 24 years old so he fits the INEOS transfer policy when it comes to age.

Especially the bits about "...buying into Maresca's project & vision..." a full season and a bit from now, Maresca might well not even be there! Alas, seems the player sees himself more as an attacker in the future, and not a WB.

I haven't seen him play but this kinda reactionary transfer from the current manager's ex-team is exactly reminiscent of the past mistakes we've been making. At the 40-50m price tag floating around, there's surely better deals out there?

That's a good amount.

It's not a crazy high fee for a seemingly very promising young player but I do actually think that'd be quite a lot for us to have spent on a player who wouldn't be coming into one of the positions in the side that's in most dire need of reinforcement.

Bit annoying but part of me feels this could be a good thing - can’t repeat same mistakes as ETH and buy half his old team.

Keeping him at Sporting until 2026 must’ve been the sweetener to get it done for what looks like a decent price - whereas we’d probably wanted him immediately.

I also think Striker, Centre Mid and Keeper needs to be prioritised.

Whereas Chelsea are tearing up trees and have lots of space in the squad on the wings?

Is that true?

Quenda's obviously incredibly exciting and all that but in my head Frimpong's basically the best specialist wingback out there, at least outside of the traditional European giants. And he's 24, so you buy him now and you get his entire career prime without the risk of getting through his teens and early 20s.

Are Madrid, Barca, City, 'Pool et al not in for him at that price?

I've only actually watched a handful of complete games from him, maybe I overrate him?

Eh? I thought he reported we agreed a deal and it’s done?

I wouldn’t wanna join either club to be fair

I was thinking that too Dev. I think that’s what SJR was preparing us for when he mentioned those. Let’s see. But I suspect that there won’t be many signings of big value

It's true, he's got a €40m clause for next summer. We should be all over him now. I guess those teams you mentioned could be reluctant since he's better as a RWB than he is as a RB. And Liverpool already has had the dame problem with TAA. Probably they will prefer a mlre defensive RB under Slot. Real could only be an option if they don't get TAA and if Xabi joins them. Barca don't seem interested.

Very disappointing news, but something we will have to get used to going forward. United don't really have the reach or the money anymore. It will be a quiet summer, although I'd have thought that would be a priority position. Diallo and Dalot isn't really a great lineup.
