Gary Neville

I mean we only qualify for the champions league every other year and we're about to exit at the group stage. We haven't won a big title in a decade, we're a top team on history but at the moment we're B tier. I mean we play Scott McTominay in midfield who wouldn't start for other top teams

So sell him then, he's too good for us.

This is actually embarrassing, and people wonder why many United fans have zero respect for him anymore.

He looked like a football player. Unlike Gary Neville who didn't look like a football manager at Valencia at all.

That is tragic. City haven't reinvented the wheel, they've just stacked a team with insane players and have a good coach. G Nev is supposedly a big United fan but then he apparently isn't aware the reason Mainoo looked good is he is competing with bloody McT, Amrabat and this season's John Smith's "'Ave it" version of Casemiro. That and he looks to also simply good a good player on the ball.

Just seems like just a great compliment to me?

How many times do you read on here comments from posters that none of our players would get into a Pep team?

That's not what he said though? He said he looks like soemone who would fit in at this Man City team and who Pep would want. Didn't say he should be there?

It was a load of bollocks post.

Why didn't he say something like he looks like a player who wouldn't look out of place in one of SAF's great teams.

Now that's a proper compliment by a proper United fan.

Why does it matter? He's a pundit making modern day comparisons - generally it's better for an audience to talk about examples from the present, not over 10 years ago.

Mainoo himself probably won't even have strong memories of what a SAF great midfield would look like!

When has City ever played with a 6 that even resembles Mainoo?

Type of guy that would tell his new GF that she’s just as pretty as his ex GF, who happened to be a model.

The hate he gets is so fecking weird. He obviously loves and cares about the club and is as hurt and disillisioned as the rest of us from years of disappointments. Then he says exactly the same things we’re all either saying or thinking – and people lose their shit. Why would you expect a pundit to act like a cheerleader for the club? And why is Keane and Scholes not getting the same vitriol when they, rightly, criticize the club?

Completely bizarre isnt it, the complete nonsense that's written on this forum too

Absolutely nothing wrong in what he said (and yes it's a compliment to Mainoo). But people on here will jump at everything he says. It is obvious for some time now that City's and our recruitment team target different type of players/midfielders (we are banging about a need to have more press resistent players so much on here that it became a meme).

He probably could have said "Barcelona player" as well. Because we sure as feck didn't sign a similiar type of midfielder for over a decade now. Tbf, we did try to sign De Jong and that's about it.

Its difficult to compare as Mainoo has only started 1 first team game so is surely impossible to answer that?
Exactly, so why the feck is Gary randomly bringing it up?!
It reads as if he’s a poster on here unnecessarily shitting on Utd during a Newcastle v Palace game thread

Is Mainoo just a 6? Think he's got potential to be way more then that. I mean you'd hope he could become a Rodri type player... If I'm allowed to say that!

It's bizarre really... Neville criticises our players, he gets shit for it... Neville praises our players, he get shit for it. Weirdest thread on the Caf strikes again.

Weird thing to say from Neville considering the reaction to Moyes’s infamous comment about aspiring to be like City.

It’s clear to me though that the qualities that Mainoo showed against Everton are exactly what ten Hag was wanting FdJ in the side for as soon as he came through the door.

Moyes was our bleedin' manager, though. The equivalent would be Neville saying that about Mainoo if he was our manager, which he's not. He's a pundit who is going to talk about teams like City and how they have been outperforming United for over a decade.

People are very soft when it comes to our ex players for some reason. I'm not saying you are @Anustart89, but it's clear to see throughout this page alone.

Completely different, Moyes was managing the reigning champions which is why it was such an embarrassing small time comment.

I’m not saying it’s the same thing but it was obvious that a United legend invoking City in his praise of a youngster everyone’s excited about wouldn’t be popular, would it? Especially given his propensity to shit on United whenever he gets the chance.

We get a hard time from the media, and you’d think that at least pundits who represented us would have a kind eye towards the club and say positive things about the club in public at least without using the small positives at the club to belittle it relative to their city rivals. Do you think a pundit who used to be a Liverpool player would go on about Martial’s supposed reputation for diving if he had been a Liverpool player, as the replays of him being clearly fouled were coming in?

Now everyone watching Sky has been fed by Gary Neville that Martial has a reputation for diving (which is completely false anyway) which might affect another decision down the line by another ref say there watching and going “ah, if Gary Neville calls him a diver then I’ll keep an extra eye on him”.

The comment about Mainoo by itself is not horrible, but it follows a pattern where United fans feel he’s snidely shitting on the club at every opportunity, unlike other club legends, which clearly affects the general view of the club and the media reaction to incidents going for or against us in games.

Wasn’t he meant to feck off from punditry after 3 years??

He’s dreadful and needs to move onto something else.

United aren't a top team then?

So, we should sell them, because he's too good for United?

It's embarrassing, what we need is more players like him, not to suggest he's too good for us. How are we supposed to get back to challenging for the league without the best players?

It's my own fault for taking any notice of the bollocks he spouts on a regular basis. If he was a poster on here, he would have been banned by now, or half the Forum would have him on ignore.

hes just highlighting the calibre of player at Citeh. Players with touch, technical ability, composure, decision making, ability to operate in tight spaces, confident to take the ball anywhere on the pitch…and you’d be a fool to deny that Citeh have that in bucket loads whilst we certainly don’t.

he’s hardly advocating to sell because we’re not good enough and what he does say…pains him…because citeh are levels above us.

we just need more Mainoo’s rather than McTs

Neville is spot on. The United-Everton match was also like watching a different sport after the City-Liverpool game. Agricultural, route one football. Horrendous, stone age stuff.

Now Everton were the main villains and we did play some decent football at times (first 5 minutes and most of second half) but Neville is spot on about Mainoo’s composure and quality on the ball looking out of place compared to the way we usually treat it like a hot potato. And the way City players look after the ball is the polar opposite to watching United so far this season.

Obviously, ETH surely wants us to be more careful in possession and Mainoo seems like a step in the right direction. But that doesn’t make Neville’s comment any less accurate.

Better accept it. City are the standard. They are on the back of a treble and will likely win their fourth epl title in a row.

I think all he’s saying is that he’s good enough to play for City.

@Sassy Colin , you're being totally paranoid about that comment. Our midfield looks nothing like City's midfield. Agreed? Ours has been dysfunctional for years and has been our main cause of discontent as a fan base this season. City's is based around control, composure, good decision making, good technique. These are qualities displayed by Mainoo on Saturday. What Neville is saying is obvious. Your take is weird. Don't be weird, Colin.

Bunch of weird snowflakes in here. Honestly so insecure that a comment like this has them frothing at the mouth.

Go support City then, if you love them so much.

Give it a fecking rest.

City v Liverpool was a limp snooze fest. That wasn’t a good example to be fair
