Gary Neville

What was he on about saying Martial has a reputation for diving? Completely making things up about foreign players as usual.

Outrageous really. Especially as it was clear he was tripped.

Martial has a rep for a few things but diving isn't one.

I think Neville just shortens it to "bad character" (e.g. foreign, lazy attacker) and "good character" (e.g. British, big defender). Martial falls into bad character.

I mean, you could call out Martial’s attitude and work-ethic without it having anything to do with nationality. Though making the jump from lazy to diving is a bit of a leap

I probably was harsh. It's not like he dislikes all foreign players but I do think he's nicer towards the players he knows and they're mostly English.

On the other hand, Neville should be capable of offering a critique of players without basing it on nationality, something he repeatedly fails to do.

Probably. I’m gonna give him the benefit though and say that if martial was born the other side of the channel and was called Tony Matthews but had exactly the same demeanour….he'd still be labelled a lazy bugger

There was that penalty he won in the 9-0 vs Southampton where Bednarek barely touched him and got sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity. Bednarek got his red card rescinded - ie it was obvious the ref (and VAR) shouldn't have given it. Other than that, I can't remember any others.

Not sure why Neville felt the need to say it. You wouldn't see him saying Salah had a reputation for diving out of fear of the backlash he'd inevitable receive.

...or Saka who dives in every game I've ever watched him play.

Posters will find anything to have a go at him for, at least there’s less in here today, if we’d lost I’m sure it would have been littered with the usual nonsense comments and posts.

I like him. He's one of the only pundits who doesn't make me want to mute my tv. But he was out of order saying Martial has a reputation for diving. I wish he didn't try so hard to be impartial, as he ends up going too far the other way to appease the ABUs watching. Just embrace the fandom like Carragher does.

Why should people ignore him blatantly lying about players though? Or his double standards with British players? He’s not infallible.

Definitely. I'm not sure he'd be assumed to be a diver though.

It wouldn’t be uncommon for him to dive though, I vividly remember the one against City especially because he was in on goal!

So on the back of a video where there was contact….Martial is a diver and Neville was right?

In my opinion, and most people who watch United, it would be uncommon though. I’m not even too sure that’s a dive in the video you posted although he certainly exaggerated the contact. The main issue I have with him is his double standards. Do you honestly think he would have said the same thing if he was English?

I dont think Neville is a Martial fan and is frustrated by him in the same way most fans are, that potentially clouds his opinion a little, i cant disagree with that. He scored a great goal yesterday but other than that wasnt in the game as much as we need, so its difficult to not get on his back.

Neville is a frustrated fan like us all and i struggle to get my head around why people on here jump on everything he says. Its only quiet on here because we won yesterday, had we lost it would have been awash with people calling him anti-united etc.

It's quite rich of you to call out on people criticising Neville who is well known for his pundit antics, and yet you defend him by posting videos of Martial diving. I mean, he is literally the last player in the PL who is known for diving, if you named his worst five attributes, I am sure no one would even name diving as one.

I understand what you’re saying but it feels like you’re missing my point. The fact of the matter is that he treats foreign players differently to British players. I think even his biggest fans would concede that. In that case, surely it’s fair to criticise him when he shows such a lack of integrity? For me (and lots of other fans I’m sure), it’s got nothing to do with him being anti-united, the reason why I have an issue with him is simply because he treats players differently based on nationality. It’s abhorrent.

Fair do's mate, i know its a criticism regularly levelled at him, i'm not totally in agreement with that assertion but i do seem to be more in the minority with that view.

Players should call these pundits out cause that was out of order.

The hate he gets is so fecking weird. He obviously loves and cares about the club and is as hurt and disillisioned as the rest of us from years of disappointments. Then he says exactly the same things we’re all either saying or thinking – and people lose their shit. Why would you expect a pundit to act like a cheerleader for the club? And why is Keane and Scholes not getting the same vitriol when they, rightly, criticize the club?

It's a weird way to phrase it, and probably on second thought he would say something like "he looked like he could get into a top team"

United aren't a top team then?

So, we should sell them, because he's too good for United?

It's embarrassing, what we need is more players like him, not to suggest he's too good for us. How are we supposed to get back to challenging for the league without the best players?

It's my own fault for taking any notice of the bollocks he spouts on a regular basis. If he was a poster on here, he would have been banned by now, or half the Forum would have him on ignore.

I mean we only qualify for the champions league every other year and we're about to exit at the group stage. We haven't won a big title in a decade, we're a top team on history but at the moment we're B tier. I mean we play Scott McTominay in midfield who wouldn't start for other top teams

For the benefit of this exercise, I've read the last two posts as voiced by Joe Pesci in discussion with Floyd Mayweather.
