Gary Lineker set to leave MOTD

BBC news coverage of this is a little OTT. They have put together a list of potential replacements and it includes Kelly Cates, Kate Abdo and Laura Woods. They are all thriving in their own respective careers at other broadcasters and I’m not sure I can see them moving tbh. I’m fairly certain it will end up being an established bbc name.
Finally trying to redeem themselves after all these years

I don't watch it so not particularly arsed, but back when I did tune in I always thought he was a pretty decent host and never took himself too seriously. Seeing as it's the BBC they'll replace him with someone who fulfills the gender and ethnic diversity quota
Oh no, please don’t hire a WOMAN!

I'd be surprised if it was still on TV post 2030. Sky uploading highlights to Youtube straight after the games mean that I have stopped watching and as others have pointed out, the core audience is probably people over a certain age.

Imagine this being your first thought. Warped brains out there.

Also for the hysterical men it would upset too!

It would be funny to put in Alex Scott just to see Joey Barton's head explode. It would also destroy the audience completely so the BBC will probably do it.

There is a difference.. MOTD is not just a 2 min highlight package... it gives fans much better highlights and analysis.

Sky's highlights is generally just the goals, whereas BBC have it a 6-8 min highlight.

The attention span of the younger generation means that the Sky 2-4 min highlight package trumps the MOTD format.

I think that the boy Gary has lots of political opinions. Which is fine. But I want to watch and hear about football when MOTD is on. If he wants to spout his "truth" then do it in his own time and not when you are employed by the "Independent" BBC.
I expect him to be taken on by Sir Keir this time next year as a consultant.

Does he talk about politics on MOTD?

I'm not sure he peddles it as his "truth" as much as his opinion. I take it from your tone you don't agree with old Gaz.

I watch it every Sunday morning while giving my lad his breakfast, I'd like to think the boy is watching too but I think he just wants his breakfast and then to play with his toys, I still like it but thats probably an age thing I grew up with it Saturday night staple for me and my Dad rarely missed it until my latter teenage years.

I’ve never understood why he is paid so much to present this. Surely people will watch irregardless of the presenter to see the game highlights

The viewing figures went up for the week he was suspended and all the other pundits / commentators went on strike to support him. Could have been exclusively due to the novelty factor, could also have been because he and the rest of them don't bring much to the table.

They also stayed high the week he came back to be fair, people wanting to see his return only for them to drop back to normal levels soon after.

For MOTD alone he does seem overpaid in a way, as it's nowhere being one of the most watched programmes on the BBC whereas he is their most highly paid presenter. He could actually earn more on other channels so industry-wise he's underpaid if anything. BBC do have to be more frugal than commerical TV though so it's a weird one.

There is World Cup, Euros etc. where the viewer numbers are much higher but I'm sure it's like you say. People will be tuning in for the football and they likely would whoever was doing it. Does he do a bit of golf too?

Suppose you can factor amount of hours worked versus some other presenters, arguably unsociable hours on Saturday nights too but if you were doing a value for money assessment versus other people employed the BBC he likely wouldn't come out too well overall.

Not watched it for a long time personally, 15 or 20 years. I remember him being alright as a presenter for the most part, although he'd have a habit of trying to crack a terrible joke or pun and smiling smugly at the camera afterwards which would get on my nerves. Was probably taught to do it when he was a panelist on They Think It's All Over and carried on. Crack a funny and sell your joke , that kind of thing. Never really liked his humour so to me he sort of came across as someone who thought he was funny but actually wasn't. Could be annoying.

The commentary is live. I worked at the BBC for years and have a couple of good friends who were (one still is) producers on MotD and texted them when I read your post, as I’d never even thought it might be recorded after the event. But they both replied saying it’s always live.
Oh cry me a river! (Next game - one that doesn't buffer stagnate pretty please)

I think I now want them to give the job to a woman of colour just to see people with these sorts of bigoted views melt down.

Don’t really care who it is. I tape MotD every Saturday and watch it on Sunday morning. That way I don’t have to see or listen to any pundits, particularly Lineker.

True.

There is another alternative that's neither of those things, individual club youtube channels. United's is crap, I wonder if it's deliberatly so to drive fans towards MUTV? Perhaps we're just useless at fan engagement. Who knows?

Not sure what time they all go up. If taking a wild guess would say MOTD probably has them first, likely something in the BBC contracts. Anyway, these do exist too.

United's are more like the Sky ones. Other clubs put up 8-10 minute highlight packages of all their games inlcuding when they play United and offer a short version too. Commentary from the other club's perspective is a bit of a jolt.

Im 64 and like you being as the goals are on youtube you dont need to watch MOTD and the twaddle Lineker and chums spouted. It will probably go woke and have a virtual all female panel with a complimentary bloke on.

Might aswell just let James Cordon host it. It's dying anyway, might aswell kill the show sooner rather than later.

Woke is when women exist.

He apparently offered to reduce his salary significantly to stay on, but still wasn't offered a new contract.

I think it's really strange to be honest. A guy who is very well liked, good at his job, has been doing it for 25 years, and suddenly he's out. Why? It feels political to me and it's grim

Darn it, gone are the days when men could talk about football all by themselves and slap a lady serving tea on the bum. I think those guys on TV are chums and spout twaddle, but I’d rather watch a demented man farting the national anthem than hear a woman speak sensibly about football, because I just want things to be like they’ve always been!i!!

Same here. It's now basically impossible to go the day without knowing the results if you don't specifically attempt to avoid them too. Which is too much of a hassle.

Go woke, go broke! Brexit means brexit. Get them back in the kitchen.

I hope by complimentary bloke you mean one who simply tells the women how good a job they're doing?

I've heard this viewpoint for a few years now, so I ask you, why is it bigoted? It's always an easy 'get out of jail' quote for left-leaning people. Just throw a few random quotes out there to go on the attack...bigoted...racist...msygonist...just to promote your viewpoint above others.

If someone doesn't like a woman presenting MOTD, thats entirely their perogative. It doesn't automatically make them 'bigoted' simply because they don't want to watch a woman present mens football. I know plenty of women that don't like it either and much prefer a male presenter.

The women have their game now, there's simply no need to carry on with the PC agenda of shoehorning a woman presenter into mens sport, just for the sake of it. I watched the women Euro championships on TV and guess what? not a single male presenter was included in a lot of the TV coverage, a lot were all female, which is ironic seeing as the women game has fundamentally grown off the back of the mens game.

I find it a very narrow viewpoint when people instantly label others as 'bigoted' simply because it doesn't fit to their liberal agenda. I personally don't like female presenters in football or rugby because their voices absolutely grate on my ears. However, I'm seriously into cycling and find I can't stand most of the male presenters on TV because Orla Chennaoui absolutely owns cycling presenting.

Don't be so quick to judge, some people just don't like female presenters, but still have wives, sisters and daughters.

It literally does.

Bigoted - "obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, in particular prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group"

If someone doesn't like the woman because of the quality of her presenting skills, or something character based then fine. But not liking them purely because of their sex is bigoted.
