Gary Lineker set to leave MOTD

He has been a great presenter and seems to be a decent bloke. Will be sad to see him go but Chapman is a great replacement if it is to be him.

Haven’t watched MOTD in years. Wonder if they’ll go down the ‘influencer’ route Sky have for Saturday morning stuff.

I don’t think I know anyone who watches MOTD nowadays given the easy access to clips and highlights.

Sack the "experts" and in-studio guff and make it an hour long showing only the highlights.

I stopped watching ages ago. The commentary is awful, the analysis is poor, Shearer and Lineker are too old to be relevant and Lineker's marketisation of his left wing political opinions through his podcasting discredits the BBC's impartiality.
Since when did 54 become too old to be relevant?

Not fond of Shearer because of his clear anti-United views, but really don't think he should be cast off based on being over 50.

Especially not to do something as physically taxing as watching something then talking about it.

The commentary is awful because they always commentate with the benefit of hindsight. They’ve been doing it for at least a decade too and it ruined it for me as soon as I noticed it. I remember mentioning it to my dad years ago when we were watching it together and he didn’t believe me until the commentator said something like “it’s Baines on the ball, it’s been a drought of 80 matches for him now as he seeks to end it, and he’s played a quick one two there and… BAINES FROM 30 YARDS!”

They don’t every time too.

I'd be happy with this, yeah.

To be honest, I only really need a commentator for a game - saying whose on the ball (not for United players obviously). Really way too much filler with co-commentators and 3-5 in the studio afterwards. When you have so many each time, and so many games, it's no wonder the quality has been diluted with the need to fill so many spots.

An urban myth, apparently: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/mppCLzgLcc5Z0Jsbs6NcnQ/frequently-asked-questions & https://johnroder.com/blog/are-the-match-of-the-day-commentators-at-the-stadiums.

Does it get good ratings still?

I must admit I still watch it. As readily available football is, I still prefer waiting until MOTD to watch the goals. I'm a sucker for tradition.
Same, I'll watch it if I'm home while it's on. Though I do tend to fast forward the "analysis" if I've started it late.

I watch it when the results have gone OK for United - and find it a decent enough show still. But tend not to bother with it - or any other football highlights / chat - when it's been a(nother) shitty weekend for us results wise.

Same, if only to see the devastated ABUs in the studio forced to praise us.

You're right. He's only protesting a conflict where tens of thousands of kids have been killed and 1 in 10 child becomes an amputee everyday. How dare he? Its not like BBC is also protesting the Ukrainian conflict right?

Last episodes aren't out yet but the week before last got 3.1m views.

For context, the most viewed show of that week in England was Strictly Come Dancing with 8.6m

Getting some serious Mandela Effect vibes here. Could've sworn he left years ago.

I like Lineker. But I don't watch MOTD. Thank god Jenas won't get it. That utter, utter twat.

Do people still watch MOTD when you can just watch highlights pretty much instantly on YT? I probably haven't watched it for 5+ years.

Yeah I tend to drift off onto my phone with the match analysis stuff. I don't even watch it on live games either to be honest.

No they don’t.

I don't think you get the meaning of the word impartiality. The BBC isn't supposed to be taking sides, and it doesn't become OK just because you happen to share his views.

But it's not only that, he's set up an entire podcast company in competition with BBC News where Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart and co are sounding off daily.

BBC isn't impartial. Nor is the league. When they're holding silences for Ukraine. As for my sharing his views, any human will.

I've noticed your conduct in the CE threads, where you got banned from all of them. Pretty understandable given your pro genocidal views.
