Gary Lineker set to leave MOTD

There is only one rational choice to replace him, as it was written into the Wembley arch.

All that is old does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
But two BeIn souls that are withered,
Return to our screens at any cost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be commentary team that was broken,
Gray and Keys again shall be kings.

Quality control - Echo echo echo echo (please stop it)
BBC isn't impartial. Nor is the league. When they're holding silences for Ukraine. As for my sharing his views, any human will.

I've noticed your conduct in the CE threads, where you got banned from all of them. Pretty understandable given your pro genocidal views.

You think the CE echo chamber here is impartial?   You think your own view is the only valid one and everyone else is evil? That's fine. You're a typical citizen of narcissistic social media. But that's not what the BBC does. Lineker has no place there and he's been circling the exit for years.

Just realised I haven’t watched MOTD in years. Used to be a tradition when I was a kid though, Saturday nights with MOTD was ace.

Stopped watching regularly many many many years ago, but I've always enjoyed him.

Very happy for Chappers if he gets the gig, feel like it's the one he's wanted for decades.

Sack the "experts" and in-studio guff and make it an hour long showing only the highlights.
Yep, liked it when they done it for that one time, would have liked it more if it was extended highlights and had the team and formation at the start then it would have been perfect.

The commentary is awful because they always commentate with the benefit of hindsight. They’ve been doing it for at least a decade too and it ruined it for me as soon as I noticed it. I remember mentioning it to my dad years ago when we were watching it together and he didn’t believe me until the commentator said something like “it’s Baines on the ball, it’s been a drought of 80 matches for him now as he seeks to end it, and he’s played a quick one two there and… BAINES FROM 30 YARDS!”

They don’t every time too.
The commentary is live. I worked at the BBC for years and have a couple of good friends who were (one still is) producers on MotD and texted them when I read your post, as I’d never even thought it might be recorded after the event. But they both replied saying it’s always live.

Haven’t watched MOTD in years. Wonder if they’ll go down the ‘influencer’ route Sky have for Saturday morning stuff.

I don’t think I know anyone who watches MOTD nowadays given the easy access to clips and highlights.
I watch it every Sunday morning!

I have genuinely no clue what Linekar offered to justify such a ludicrously large slice of the license fee pie.

Use the money to get a cheap nobody to read the auto cue and invest the money in some worthwhile pundits.

Yeah I’ve done some research since that post and other posters arguing otherwise. Basically they commentate for the full 90 minutes and the commentators say a lot of things in that time and some will try to aide the editors by giving as much context to the match.

It’s the editors who then use that context and arrange the commentary in such a way that it often appears as foreshadowing. That along with them cutting the video to hint at what’s to come - 92nd minute and they give a substitute preparing to come on 20 seconds of air time. Substitute then scores.

He’ll still be there in 2027 having accepted a 50% pay cut.

For sure, similarly if an early yellow is shown then you know a red is coming.

I don't think you get the meaning of the word impartiality. The BBC isn't supposed to be taking sides, and it doesn't become OK just because you happen to share his views.

But it's not only that, he's set up an entire podcast company in competition with BBC News where Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart and co are sounding off daily.
His Twitter isn’t the BBC. He can say what he wants on there as longs it’s not illegal or bringing his employer into disrepute. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it has anything to do with his ability to carry out his job well.

And you seem to think a man can’t host a football programme on telly because he doesn’t agree with your views?

It's not a question of agreeing with my views (though you clearly don't know what my views are). The BBC itself doesn't think he can. Lineker's been running a low level turf war with the Director General's office for years now. Remember when he got suspended? It's a surprise to nobody that he's not having his contract renewed. They would have sacked him long ago if they weren't worried about the backlash. Especially since he's now running a podcast company that's in direct competition with BBC News. But if the BBC isn't impartial then it is worthless and letting him go is the right thing to do.

In any case he's past it. The BBC coverage of Euro24 was awful and far worse than ITV, and him and Shearer were the main culprits.

Always thought he’d be the best football pundit on telly if he’d gone that route rather than presenter, much better to listen to about football stuff than the halfwits he asks questions to

Yes, when tens of thousands of kids are dead then my view is the only valid one.

I sleep well at night knowing that I am not a bigoted, genocide excusing, child killing supporter.

Proper BBC man. Remember the time he paraded around his front of a load of children in his underpants. Granted, he was presenting MOTD at the time and all of those kids were at home watching, but still.

They can’t have been watching. They were under the age of forty.

Like most TV it's kind of dying out now which is honestly sad to see imo. I used to love it as a kid as it was the only night of the week i was allowed to stay up past 10. I think it being an iconic British TV show makes it sadder (as a Brit), I don't think many people realise how influential Britain is/was around the world because of the BBC - the music, documentaries and sports broadcast all around the world is why so many people listen to our music, speak english as a second language and have a Premier League team they follow

BBC news coverage of this is a little OTT. They have put together a list of potential replacements and it includes Kelly Cates, Kate Abdo and Laura Woods. They are all thriving in their own respective careers at other broadcasters and I’m not sure I can see them moving tbh. I’m fairly certain it will end up being an established bbc name.

Chappers or Gabby for Linekers job,.

Laura Woods was ok a while ago but she is getting a bit too political on Twitter.

All five of the main presenters throughout the program's history have been white men. Seems pretty pertinent to question why.
That wasn’t his question though. His question was why doesn’t anybody ever think a white appointment is due to an ethic diversity quota?

According to our aversion to cancel culture, we can't have anyone 'political' and or German. It's a crying shame because Olaf Scholz has recently become available.

Anyway, I truly hope they revert to the one host/one pundit format of lore. I don't care who either are, so long as the vast majority of the programme is the actual match, not analysis and pundit banter.

Can't say I'm even remotely bothered by this news.

He's never struck me as a particularly talented presenter. He earns a fortune for doing a job any other decent presenter could do for a fraction of the money just because of his background and longevity in the role.

As a TV Licence payer this should have happened a long time ago, MOTD is about the match highlights anyway rather than who fronts it.
