It is a low fee because he is out of contract in the summer.

I think he is a very good defender. Why Arse went for Mertesacker over him in the summer is quite funny and is typical Wenger.

But for chelsea I am sure he will do well. Is he an improvment over Alex though? No IMO

I'd happily have Alex as cover for Vidic while he's out ;)

Alex has regressed over the last year or so, I think injuries are catching up with him. He was never known for his pace but this season looked even slower. Serie A would be ideal destination for him.

Cahill will provide a solid defensive cover, plus he's English, which is important. Still, according to AVB the personal terms are some way from beein agreed, so the deal may not go through yet.

What do you reckon about moving David Luiz to full back?

Seems he'd be suited better...

To be honest if he is expecting ridiculous wages, I can understand why Wenger went elsewhere. I don't really understand who he thinks he is trying to hold Chelsea for ransom with regards to wages, he's 26 and has been with mid-table teams for the majority of his career. There's a reason a top club hasn't come in to sign him sooner.

I think he played as a left back for Benfica at times and looked fairly well.

I'm not sure if AVB sees him as a full back, though.

Maybe not, I reckon he'd be good there to be honest. He looks a ball player, he looks comfortable going forwards and a real 'footballer'.

Not to say a centre back can't be, but he does get caught out a fair bit. Though that might just be him adjusting to the English game.

Currently, Luiz lacks discipline to play center back position properly. I think he has all the attributes to become a top class defender but he needs to curb his temperament and learn to read the game better.

Similar to Jones I pressume, their both very young but Luiz lacks that concentration sometimes and maybe also the language barrier doesn't help him much.
'Very young' is considerably stretching it when it comes to Luiz. Young enough to improve as a centre-back.... no doubt about it. But 'very young' only Jones is. Jones is 19, born 1992. Luiz is 24, born in 1987. I'll be amazed if Jones is as error-prone as Luiz is now at the age of 24. In fact, injuries permitting, I expect Jones to be one of the best in the world in five years time. Luiz is nowhere near being one of the top centre-backs in the league right now.

Looks like Cahills agent is being a little greedy.AVB as said that both parties are miles apart regarding discussions.

By the looks of it, he is after a very big deal. Chelsea aren't the sort of club who would usually hesitate if a player was asking slightly over what he's worth. I can still see it going ahead though, even if Chelsea give him absurd wages.

It would certainly be a massive increase for him. What's he on at the moment? I imagine that he'll be wanting around the 100k range, so that could be almost double what he's currently getting.

Given that he'll be going on (relatively speaking) the cheap because his contract is nearly up, he'll certainly be expecting huge wages.

Yeah, from his point of view (a simplistic interpretation) what's he getting by Chelsea giving Bolton 7 million. Why not wait until summer when he can pocket that money in a signing on fee if he can get a bidding war going. The wages will have to be enough above his Bolton rate so that it would be advantageous for him to receive the higher wage for 6 months rather than wait for the greater signing on fee.

You can say that again...

GARY CAHILL PUTS MOVE AT RISK

GARY CAHILL will have to drop his incredible wage demands by £50,000 a week if he wants to complete a January move to Chelsea.

The Daily Express can reveal England defender Gary Cahill has staggered the Blues by demanding a £120,000-a-week contract after Chelsea and Bolton had agreed a £7million fee.

That would put him on the same salary as Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole and only £30,000 a week short of top earners John Terry, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres.

With his Bolton contract expiring in the summer, Cahill is aware he can get a big deal – but Chelsea have told the defender to get real. They are prepared to give him £70,000 a week, which is still more than summer signing Juan Mata.

Chelsea are hopeful Cahill will drop his initial demands in a second meeting between his representatives and the club this week and that the transfer can be concluded.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has warned Chelsea are not the only club to have shown an interest in Cahill.

He said: “Nothing has progressed as far as it has with Chelsea and we haven’t agreed a fee with any other club. But we’ve had enquiries – you do for any player.”

The world's gone fecking mad.

No fecking way that Mata is at less than 70k, Express talking crap.

The thing is, its possible because of what he was on at Valencia at a time when they didnt have the resources to reward their top performers. Chelsea were the only club who actually bid so it was their offer or stay at Valencia

Liverpool and Arsenal will both feel they should have gone for Mata, and especially Liverpool, when they would have only had to spend a little bit more than they did for Downing.

The same could be said for us and Young. And isn't Young on something ridiculous like 110k or 120k a week?

I think Young is on 92k a week, and with Cahill's contract situation I wouldn't be surprised if he's asking for something in this region.

Crazy money for an average enough player imo.

I think he could become a very good defender - not yet at his peak and appears to have all of the attributes.

Clearly he wants a lot of money and given that he can move for free at the end of the year, why not?

no one knows for sure how much any player is on per week - it is not even shown in the company accounts. So all this stuff about Mata is on X per week and Young is on blah blah is just bollocks.
It is all just guess work usually - although I assume that agents do leak some info out if they are trying to negotiate publicly.

Cahill's performances this season fresh in mind, I wouldn't pay him 40K a week let alone 120K. He's crazy.

I'd tell him to go feck himself if he came to me and asked for that. Must have a hugely inflated opinion of himself.

He won't get £120k but he will easily squeeze £80k+ out of Chelsea I feel. They shouldn't pay him that though as neither Tottenham nor Arsenal are going to offer him more than £50k a week but I still got the feeling they will.

He's about Terry's level as of now.

Which isn't good enough, as he's been poor this season.

And Torres is on £150,000-a-week :p

So, each goal he has scored for Chelsea cost Abramovich £11.5m.

Surely Mata is 100k plus....

Why? He signed for Valencia on a free after being in Real Madrid's B team. His next contract was put off for like a year because of Valencia's financial crisis. Eventually at around this time last year he signed a new deal, but Valencia were still not in a position to greatly reward him. He wont have been on that much.

In the summer there was one club who put a bid in for Mata. And as long as its a fair improvement on whatever he was on (low) then why would he have a problem?

The alternative was staying at Valencia

Just came here to see if the £120k figure had been mentioned, how ridiculous!

But if he waits for the Summer he can get the clubs into a bidding war over the signing on fee, like Michael Ballack did when he left Munich.
