Gary Cahill

I think it would be a brilliant signing. I would equate it to the same as Young; he's got bags of PL experience (and some International), he might not be *world class* (whatever that means) but he's solid, consistent, and would make a nice counter balance to the youthful signings we're bringing in too. Your squad can't be all £30m signings, players like Cahill are vital to the team ethic. And of course, being English is a nice bonus. Throw Cahill into the mix and we'd have a really solid English core for the next decade. And if he costs <£10m due to his contract running down, perfect.

Wouldn't be surprised if we went in for Cahill or got him. With Vidic out for the season, and Rio has been too injury prone in recent times.

We have Smalling, Jones & Evans, but with the twins being so injury prone too, both Smalling and Jones have had to fill in at right back.

Why? What's special about him?

I think he's a great prospect with huge upside. He ticks all the boxes. Physical, Quick, Athletic, Technical, Imposing, and Versatile (RB or CB). He reminds me of a more technical version of Smalling with the grittiness (not nearly) of Vidic.

I would rather we sign a MF and let Jones go back to his favoured position at CB.

It's all about value though. The Midfielders that SAF has identified as targets may not be available at all or at an affordable price. Cahill we can get for next to nothing in today's market. Jones has been a decent option in Midfield so far so if it means having that to stick with that option for now and adding to the defence then i'm all for it.

I'm sure CM is our priority but we've been told for the last few seasons about how important value is in today's market for us.

So if Rio were to be injured you would be happy to go into the new year with Jonny Evans and Phil Jones as our centre half pairing?

That is at best unwise imo. Jones has played only a couple of games for us there, and i would suggest during all his performances he has been much more impressive going forward than he has been defending.

It is highly likely that if we were unable to acquire a midfielder in the summer, we will be even less likely to do so in Jan. Ideally we would all like the midfielder we obviously need, but signing Cahill would allow us experienced cover for Rio, while keeping the option of keeping Jones in midfield till others return from injury.

Rio is not injured, though. It is also perfectly plausible that he won't suffer an injury.

I would be happy with any combination of Rio, Evans, Smalling and Jones.

Considering his recent record with injuries i would say it is much more likely that he will become injured at some point. It is true though he may not, but i would not be confident of it any more than i am of the twins remaining injury free.

Fair enough, only time will tell i suppose, but like i say i too would prefer the midfielder we crave, but rather than siging no-one, i think Cahill would give us options and cover that we would not have if we were to sign no-one at all.

Let's not forget we did this not too long ago, when we should have signed a striker sooner, we didn't and placed all of our hopes on Rooney not getting injured. He did, and within a week we were out of the CL and subsequently lost the league by a single point by failing to score at Blackburn.

Rio is more of a risk than Rooney was, so why take risks when we can alleviate many of those risks, with a good signing for a reasonable fee?

You are correct, signing a defender does make sense, especially as we are unlikely to get any of our long term targets in January. And Cahill makes sense because of his contract situation. Still, I am not wholly convinced by him, ability wise. He has been very disappointing this season. Perhaps due to his expecting to leave during the close season.

A Right back maybe, but an over rated centre back who has gone backwards in the last year no thanks.

We have enough in Jones, Smalling and Evans in terms of future. Ferdinand has another season or two in him as does Vidic. Can also see Thorpe and maybe McGinty getting a look in the Carling Cup sides next season.

Evra was exactly in the same situation when we signed him. His form had dipped over the last two years and at the time everyone use to adore our resident Argentinian leftback-cum-traitor.

However, time proved Fergie right. Maybe he knows something that the rest of us don't ( and you can bet on that :) )

I don't think we necessarily need a central defender, but I am concerned at the full back positions.

If SAF thought a central defender was needed, I would love to see rumours come true in terms of the interest in Hummels - he's class. But I agree, I'm uncertain of Cahill's qualities and we shouldn't be buying players just because of the potential "bargain" to be had.

Will be a good squad player for us, and good cover for an injured Vidic and ageing Rio, why not ?

I'd love Fergie to sign Hummels too, but he will cost £25m minimum ...

:( I hope not. We need a midfielder, not a CB. Especially not a mediocre CB.

He's a good CB in my view and is prem tested. This would be a cheap and smart signing considering we need Jones for CM right now and Smalling may play most of the season as RB given the twins struggle to stay fit for long.

Rio, Cahill and Evans would be our CB's for the remainder of the season and we wouldn't need to spend a fortune, plus Jones may turn into the type of CM Fergie wants thus saving more long term, all round good business sense I think.

Exactly my view.

For all those saying you would prefer a midfielder, you are all correct, we would all prefer a midfielder and need one more than a CB. But in the likely event we cannot get one, this is the next best scenario in my view.

I think that's what it is Lance, i believe he thought he was on his way, and it all fell down fairly late on, which must have been a huge disappointment for him. Bolton are not exactly ripping up trees this season, and i think he needs a new motivation.

Imo he has been too good for too long to suddenly become a bad player, and his form with England has still been very good. He needs to up his level at a bigger club and personally i think he can do so.

Cahill signing for Chelsea makes more sense than Utd getting him.

Good signing for Chelsea.

Watch him grow.

There's no doubting he's having a poor season. Along with every single other Bolton player.

Terry must be getting a pretty big ban. He's a Ben Haim like signing imo, he'll be sold soon enough.

Have you watched him this season?
Of course I have.

On this season's form, mediocre would be flattering. The Yakubu-goal yesterday.. absolutely rubbish defending.
Well he didn't start playing football this season thankfully. So I'm not going to judge him on performances in a season in which no one in his team is playing well.

Gary Cahill is a good defender - he just isn't better than what Chelsea and United already have. He is however fairly young so it's a decent buy for Chelsea if they sign him

Do think its strange that Bolton will let him go though - if he stays, they will probably stay up and then it will still be cheaper to let him go on a free in the summer

Good signing at 7 million. The early signs are that Villas-Boas isn't half bad in the market.
