If us and Arsenal went for him, surely he'd pick Arsenal, he'd be guaranteed games there, not here.

Him and (a fit) Vermaelen would be a good partnership.

Don't see any point bringing him here. We have other priorities
 
We should sign him siply because he represents ''value'' and with our debt it is clear that this is a more important variable to us than the quality of the player or those our opposition are signing.

With Vidic out for the season and Rio unreliable we'd be going the rest of the season with just Smalling, Evans and Jones. Add the fact 1 of that lot will be required at full back for the perma-crocked Brazilians and suddenly we're very thin on the ground.

I wouldn't be surpsied to see us sign another defender in Jan. Maybe not Cahill but given that he'll be going on the cheap would you really be surprised?

I liked Cleverley when he was at Watford a couple of years back. He looked good in some of the earlier games (but then so did Anderson) I'd need to see him tested a bit more to say if he's made up into a topclass player or not.

Cleverley at Watford was more of an AM though, wasn't he? You've got a point RE the Anderson comparison.

I think a lot of weight is put on his shoulders. What I do think, is he offers our midfield something we otherwise lack. Ball-carrier, good close control, assured on the ball, one-two's, goal threat, and energy.

EDIT: Actually, he's a bit of an Arsenal-type of midfielder, isn't he?
 
No need for Gary Cahill. He doesn't bring quality or experience that we don't have.
 
First of all, if we were on the lookout for a centre back, surely we would look for someone better than Cahill. Plus, with him being English, his price is naturally double what is actual value is.

Secondly, we'd be better off buying a midfielder who could hang onto and pass the ball. That would take pressure off our defence.
 
One of the most over-rated English player right now. I would rather give Smalling an extended run at center back.
 
What we need is a good back who can either take over the right-back or at least cover that position in addition to working as cover for Evra.

If we get that - we still have Evans, Ferdinand, Jones and Smalling who can play in the center of defense. It's not as good as Vidic - but it should be good enough
 
I really wouldn't mind this fellow coming to United especially, since he will on his last 6 months of his contract.

And Vidic is still only 30 by the way not 31.

Manchester United are on standby to snap up a January sales bargain and land England star Gary Cahill from Bolton.

The Reds are looking at options to fill the big gap created by the loss of captain Nemanja Vidic who ruptured his kneeligament in Basel last week.

United are resigned to being without the influential Serbian defender for the rest of the season but are also steeling themselves for a potential 12-month absence as they await news on when the 31-year-old will undergo surgery.

Sir Alex Ferguson was not initially looking to add to a five-strong senior central defensive core but Vidic’s injury woes could change his plans.

The Reds have been playing £16m summer capture Phil Jones in midfield and it is a role that is winning the 19-year-old admirers.

Injuries to the Brazilian da Silva twins has meant Chris Smalling is also continuing at right back and he too has been impressing in the position.

With Smalling and Jones set to be employed elsewhere long term, it now leaves just Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans at the heart of United’s back four. It has forced Fergie into a re-think and Cahill is emerging as a potential transfer window steal.

The 25-year-old Wanderers centre-half is out of contract at the Reebok in the summer and has been reluctant to sign a new deal.

Arsenal were keen to sign him in the summer but Arsene Wenger baulked at the asking price, believed to have been £25m.

The Gunners boss says he is no longer interested in Cahill but Chelsea and Spurs are being linked with a mid-season swoop.

Bolton are currently rooted to the foot of the Premier League and Cahill, who is set to land a place in Fabio Capello’s Euro 2012 squad in the summer, wouldn’t want to go to the Ukraine and Poland contemplating possible life in the Championship next term.

The thing is if three to four teams like United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs all come in for him, then where will be decide to go?
 
I cant believe Im saying this but I would actually be quite happy to hold of him now - can fill in for Vidic and allow Jones to grow into the ultimate midfielder.
 
Let the coaches work out what's needed at end of season and go for long term replacements. Unless of course there is someone out there who we've been tracking, and becomes available in January. I reckon it would be a pointless exercise with about 16/17 games left come January. We have enough players to carry us through to the end of season.
 
He has had a pretty woeful season so far, Bolton have been utter dross, but on a personal level - Cahill has been very poor.

In saying that, he has been a consistent performer for the past 3 seasons. I have always felt that he is a tad overrated, and I can honestly say that I would rather we didn't sign him. Good player, but I feel he would suit a team of Spurs ilk as opposed to ours.

We still have Rio, Smalling, Jones and Evans for center back role while Vidic is out. We need a midfielder.

If we get a proper midfielder in then Jones could play RB & Smalling CB. It's the lack of options at RB and CM that have forced these two to play elsewhere, if we get a real CM in January then there is enough cover for CB for this season.

Cahill's a decent player but he's no better than Evans in my opinion.

Yes, I agree. I think if we get a good CM then Jones and Smalling can be kept in defence where their natural positions are.

But if we do go into the market for a bargain defensive signing to compensate for losing Vidic, why not Alex?

He is quicker than Evans and more physical too, personally i like Cahill. I think he is a solid, reliable defender who is pretty good on the ball. I would say at this point he is obviously ahead of Evans because he has much greater experience.

I would agree with the Chief on this one, i think once he moves to a bigger club he will get even better. Many doubted he was good enough for England, and imo he has proved those doubters wrong with some very assured perfromances, i think he would do similarly well with a move to a bigger club too.

Why would we sign a defender so we could keep playing our other defenders out of position, as opposed to an actual midfielder and a full back?

No, it really wouldn't. It'd make as much as sense as starting with four centre halves at three different positions. Which it'd actually be.
