But isn't the possession game more for the defenders and midfielders? At some point you need to stop passing it about and score a goal, and that's what Bale can do.

He will need to be involved in the build up. He'l need to pass it about and play in tight spaces patiently. He won't get acres of space to run into, we are pretty much camped in the other half most games.

I honestly believe there's a possibility of this transfer happening, but only if Bale has a terrible pre-season and start to the season.
The facts are - he's not appreciated at all by the fickle Madrid fans. He won't sell as many shirts as Madrid would like, being the world's most expensive player and all. And he doesn't get on well with Ronaldo - the fans God.
The "what ifs?" in this situation turn Bale into one of the biggest gambling chips in football history. Real know that they could get £100M from United who would quite easily spend that much for him, and that is extremely tempting for a heavily in debt Madrid over a player who had a nightmare last season, and who's marketability is depreciating all the time. If Madrid don't hit the ground running this season, after Barca cleaned up last season, there will be heavy pressure on Madrid to re-think how they can turn it around. Possibly to use the funds from a Bale transfer.
Bale to United is a possibility, but only a slight possibility. The player doesn't want to leave, but I'm not 100% convinced Madrid don't want to sell. They claim they don't, but that is natural in order to maintain his value.
The very fact that Benitez is forming the team around Bale, has to be seen as an attempt to try and get him ticking in order to justify Madrid's biggest player investment. The attention to Bale must be frustrating to Ronaldo, and the fans will get frustrated very quickly if doesn't work fast. The Whole Ramos situation is a smokescreen. United want Bale.

Sorry to focus solely on this point, but Real being heavily in debt?

I think I read that Bale has started preseason as a central midfielder. I don't know if that's Benitez's way of preparing his attack for life without Bale, but I would love to see Woody test Real's resolve. I don't think this transfer would be any more unlikely than the Di Maria one last season.

Real have been in debt for decades. It doesn't matter.

Bale isn't an upgrade on Di Maria at all.
Depends what you want
If it's a wide forward / winger then Bale in an upgrade
If it's someone who can play in a midfield three or on the wing then Di Maria is the better player
The fact they both played well together at Madrid shows that they fulfil different roles

aye. I think they are too similar and if Di Maria didn't fit in LvG system, I doubt that Bale will.

Also pissing 100m on Bale would seem just so wrong...

You should work for The Sun or The Mirror. You are transfer muppetry is of the highest order.

Madrid bought James Last summer, and that paved the way for Di Maria to go. Do you see them buying anyone like that this summer? Because thats the only way Bale will leave.

He's started the season by giving Bale a free pass to play/roam where he likes. As such he's in a kind of 9.5 position with freedom to go wide and no defensive duties. Which is what his agent apparently told Perez was the key to making Bale succeed. The trouble with that is that it emphasises his teacher's pet status in the press and unless it works, and works fast, it'll lead to bad feeling in the Bernabeu and in the team.

Bale is a massive upgrade on Di Maria no question about that. He would put us right up there with chelsea as title favourites while Di Maria garentees us nothing.

About 450M apparently, and a 350M stadium renovation imminent.

Mental eh? Not really - they will always have credit with financial institutions to spend whatever they like, because they'll always generate a global income to service a bit of the debt. Cool by association, being part of it too.

That being said, cool by association works both ways. The bank (Banco de Madrid) that bankrolled them for all these years went tits up on money-laundering charges with its parent company, back in March: http://www.wsj.com/articles/banco-d...parent-accused-of-money-laundering-1426495127

We don't just read the papers and see who we're linked to, that's for sure," Woodward told MUTV

Played as no.10 against Roma.

Yeah i would. Di Maria didnt have a great season at all & was constantly booed by the fans. Folk are gettin their heads twisted by his man of the match performance in the Champions League final..
11 goals and 26 assists in 52 games from midfield. Some serious revisionism going on if people are pretending that Di Maria didn't have a great season in 13/14.

I said, "slight chance". And there is a slight chance.
And yeah, Di Maria would most likely leave as a consequence. BTW, Bale would be a huge upgrade to Di Maria.

Bale is an upgrade on Di Maria as a winger no doubt but both top players. I'd love to see them both here at United that would make us super strong imo.

You are rewriting history here. He was constantly one of their top 3 players all over the season. 12 months back I'm not sure if we put a poll how many would've wanted Di Maria over Bale.

For one Bale's first season was much more underwhelming and put under pressure by the fans..

He's equal to Di Maria. If we could get Bale in for the same price we could sell Di Maria for then I'd say we should probably go for it. However, it seems Di Maria doesn't really want to be here (more likely England than United) and Bale doesn't want to leave Real either. So why chase a player who doesn't want to join us?

I actually think with the players we brought in already, we could carry on using Young on the wing and be ok. We're more than equipped in midfield to do that now. Sell Di Maria and go for a £50m+ striker like Müller to play alongside Rooney up front.

Bale's power on the ball and pace is frightening. His ability to leave defenders for dead, awesome shooting range from 20 to 35 yards, great in the air etc etc
Why are we even comparing him to Di Maria? He's quick and got a wicked cross on him when he can be bothered.

Not based on his last season performances he aint. Bale had his boo's, but his season was far more productive than Di Maria's. Bale's been the better player for atleast 3 seasons in a row - 2 at Real & 1 at Spurs.

Di Maria was a f*ckin joke for us after the 1st few of months. Looked like he was deliberately f*ckin up to get sold - i.e. rediculously tryin to run straight through defenders - instead of around them & his constant overhit passes that landed in Row Z all the time..

Bit contradictory that you had to google that to get those stats :rolleyes:

Obviously I used a website to get the precise stats, but only because my BS radar was off the charts when I read your comment about ADM having a poor season. I was just reminding myself how well he played and how statistical evidence backs that up -- how is that contradictory?

SmileyFace.

Next season perhaps. There's nothing way Perez is selling his man this summer. Well, unless we go mental and break the world record.

You should re-watch the last 6 months of that season. He was instrumental in a large proportion of their games during the latter stages of the la liga. Other than the CL final, the game where Real lost 4-3 to Barcelona stands out, as I remember di Maria tearing Barca's defence apart.

Bale is better suited to the PL. They will not sell him because he's a great player with plenty of years ahead hence the £85m they paid.

Many people judging Di Maria on last season. Class is permanent, form is temporary. I hope so anyway as I'd hate him to do a Torres. He's class and people forget how good of a passer he is in the final third.

The Mirror have clearly had a complete stab in the dark at this 'surprise striker'... By inventing a story about our interest in a fecking winger no less.

I don't think anyone would doubt that Di Maria is world class, but I think Van Gaal's decision to use two strikers upfront and play with three at the back with wingbacks early last season messed him up. He had to play in the middle, and it just didn't work for him. This season it's probable that we'll play with Rooney as a loan striker, and Di Maria would be back on the wing.

Di Maria was the better player at Madrid when the both of them were there. He also delivered 3 assists in el clasico that season where Bale did nothing. And he gave Bale a nice goal to head in from close range in the CL final after leaving two players 'for dead' with skill 'run real hard in a straight line when there is space' Bale could only dream of. He also won the MOTM in that very CL final.

3 great matches with di Maria playing somewhat at his level and everyone on here wanted to carress his balls. One season where he has struggled to adapt (not the only crap performer and still looking the most creative outlet) and he becomes a quick player with a cross on him every now and then. Christ, the standards of these posters on here are dropping hard and fast. It's the same mentality of those Madrid supporters wanting to kill Bale for a sub par season.
