Gareth Bale

MANCHESTER United have made Tottenham's Gareth Bale one of their prime summer targets and are willing to pay £20million to secure his services.
A deal for Bale, 20, could even be discussed when the two clubs meet at Old Trafford on Saturday and the player is understood to be aware of United's interests.

Spurs travel to Manchester hoping to clinch fourth spot - and Champions League qualification would represent their best chance of being able to afford to turn down United and convince Bale to stay at White Hart Lane.

Manchester City and Inter Milan are also monitoring him but it is United’s interest that is currently strongest.

Although a left-back, Bale has looked equally comfortable on the left wing for Spurs.

He went 24 Premier League games without appearing on a winning side but has excelled since the turn of the year.

Bale scored his first goals of the season in the back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Chelsea, but United’s interest in him is not new. They first wanted to sign him as a 17-year-old from Southampton and Welsh legend Ryan Giggs even tried to persuade him to go to Old Trafford.

At the time, however, Bale was fearful he would not get enough first-team chances and instead chose to sign for Spurs for a fee of £5m, rising to £10m. A serious ankle injury cut short Bale’s first season and he struggled to make much of an impact when manager Harry Redknapp joined in October 2008.

Won't happen IMO, Spurs would be extremely stupid to let go off a player with world class potential at £20million

Like Redknapp would think about selling Bale. These stories always seem to surface just because United are playing against them next.

Let Spurs plump him up a bit for another season or two then we'll poach him.

What's better to replace Giggs with the next world class left winger from Wales?

Bale was outstanding against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Lets make this clear lads. Bale has been playing Left Wing for Spurs in the last few games, not LB and its a position he's very, very good at.

Should we spend 20million on him? If he keeps this current form up, i'd say he's worth as much as 25million considering his age.

That is the big question though. Can he keep up this form? Is what he is doing now going to be what we could expect of him long term, or is it simply a purple patch.

Its a gamble for sure. But the problem arises that if he does indeed keep the form up into next season and beyond then we'd be having to pay a good deal more than 20million. But then Redknapp could easily turn 20million down anyway, as much as I think he'd be a quality player for us. I just can't see him moving away from Spurs yet. He's just broken through.

The kid moved to a new city, a bigger club, had a few injuries and took a while to find his feet and produce the kinda performances the football world hoped they would see! FFS.......he's a bloody kid and the muppets who wrote him off now look the twats they are as he is the real deal. SAF should sign him up as IMO he'll tie down that left side of our midfield for the next 10yrs.

He's very good on the left wing especially in a 4-4-2. And we could use some improvements to our 4-4-2 tactically.

That said, our 4-4-2 is different to Spurs. They play with a proper left wing, we do not. And thats how we set up tactically to push Evra forward, not because of personnel. Giggs, Park and Nani all indent and play narrow with 1-2's to get Evra up the pitch. And its usually a slow buildup which doesnt really suit a 4-4-2 against a 4-3-3 as that allows your opponents to get back to their positions and set to defend the space.

Rather than signing Bale, I think Evra playing as a normal left back that supports play and Nani/Park just driving forward on the left as fast as possible as a normal left winger would already make a good deal of difference for our 4-4-2. Signing Bale on top of that I dont think we really need, but he'd definitely benefit from that change and play the role well.

True, but I'd rather see this...

If we signed him, it'd free up Valencia to do a midfield job now and then. That said it's just another rumor

When we were first linked with him years ago i was pretty excited about him, the next Ryan Giggs and all that.

Then he went to Spurs, played at left back and looked all over the shop. This season though he has been moved further forward and looks the player he could and should become. Amazing to think he's only 20.

EDIT: And i know he played fullback for Southampton but he didn't really get forward much in his early days at Spurs.

To get him from Spurs, would be paying £20m+ for sure.

For that money we'd have a good chance of landing Silva, Gourcuff, Balotelli, Angel Di Maria.

I'm not convinced Bale is as good as the above, or has as much potential as the younger names mentioned (Balotelli, Di Maria).

I'd rather have Bale than Balotelli... if he can continue his past few performances, I can see him being better than Di Maria too.

If he starts getting better, which I think he will, he will only cost us more as the days go by. So the sooner the better or we might be seeing a ridiculous amount of price tag on him. What would be a better option is we buy him and then loan him out to get some first team action for another year. He is bound to get better if he keeps playing continuously.

The longer we wait, the more expensive he becomes.

If he's already £20-25... after another spectacular season at Spurs it'll go up to £30 or stay at same price Well worth waiting in my opinion just in case another more cheaper option catches our eye.

I haven't seen much of Balotelli to say who is better but Mario is more versatile than Bale. He can play on BOTH wings and also as a STRIKER. Bale can only play on the left. But again with Balotelli comes arrogance and misbehavior.

You might like to see it but we wouldnt play it too much :p

More and more these days Scholes is being deployed behind the other midfielders. He's usually in the position Carrick used to play for us as a deep lying playmaker. When we've struggled, sure we push him up and have him help us attack and he's got a few goals. But I think its only because he's playing the deeper role which saves his legs somewhat and helps him stay unoccupied from the opposition's midfield, that he can have a longer and heavier involvement in the match and if needed push him forward when we are running out of time for goals.

So for the majority of a match we'd most likely have Fletcher and Gibson both in front of Scholes. And Nani and Valencia would be good competition for the right flank... But after a season or so I'd think whoever is starting less would probably want to look for more first team football? I mean they are both easily good enough to be starting in a very good side. And to really push on and become the best players they can be they need to be playing every week.

In the last couple of matches Bale has been as good if not better than any of those players on the left, against Arsenal and Chelsea. Its only a few games so you do need to hold your horses somewhat, but performing extremely well in the big games should earn you lots of points like it has done with Nani.

You might not be convinced he's better than them, but how are you convinced that for example Silva and Di Maria are better than Bale at left wing?

Which top sides have you seen Silva and Di Maria have brilliant matches against playing left wing?

Very talented players no doubt. But technique and talent arent all you need to be amazing left wingers. And besides Bale has both as well, just perhaps not quite as much.

Balotelli is a great talent.. but Bale is a sublime talent too. We need an out and out left winger.. a left footer to replace Giggs .. so for me Bale fits into that priority category.

He also happens to mentally be a perfect fit for United, a hard trainer and a guy who wants to get the best out of his ability.. Milner likewise.

Fergies best signings are the ones who may not be stellar names but they're just quitessentially United.. bit of flair and alot of heart.

We have Tosic and we'll most likely give him next season to put a case together as the other option to Nani. If he doesnt come good he will get moved on and then maybe we'll "need" that left footed left winger.

We dont usually sign a player and not give them a proper chance before moving them on. Not when they quite clearly have a little bit of talent and could possibly do the job.

Didn't he just say this week that he wanted to make his loan move to Koln permanent? I think we spent 10M on Tosic. So far it seems like a waste of money.

I believe he will keep it. He used to play like that at left back, in the championship. A reason why we wanted him before Spurs beat us to his signature. It' just taken hima bit of time to find his best role for Spurs. Now that he has found it people are seeing he real Bale. He is a very talented player.

Tosic will never be the left winger we need.

If he does come back and make an impact it'll be as a right winger cutting in or in a central position ala Scholesy which again would leave us needing a left winger with a left foot.

I still remember the days where we were going... Has Bale ever won a match with Spurs... ????

So now he is potentially world class after two good games Vs Arsenal, Chelsea ( with 10 men )...

He has had an okay season and hardly started the first half of the season, FFS let's wait till he gets a consistent run on a Spurs:devil: team then have a go at debating if he's worth 20m.

He's still worth the same money to me unless we are going for money over value... I'd ooze in Obertan in LW ANYday... I have faith in our youth. I don't want another big signing just to put the pressure on them.
