These prices are rather embarrassing really. I mean I know it's sort of silly but I look at all this money being thrown about in football and can't help but feel it could be put to better use. There are plenty of people starving in the world, who lack education, sanitation, or medications. These sorts of money could be put to good use and go a long way to change that but instead oil barons et al. would rather buy a football team and pump billions of their cash into it. That just seems absolutely mental to me.

The money doesn't get used up. However much money Madrid give Spurs for Bale, the money will still exist within football. The only money that will have been "wasted" by the footballing community is the agents fees and player wages. That money will be spent by Spurs on more players, or a Stadium, but it will trickle down eventually.

In the end, all the money in football ends up in one of four places: Player Wages, Agents Fees, or interest repayments, or running the game.

But the actually one off payment for Bale is no different to buying 4 lesser players. Its not wasted.

Donating money to Africa "would be waste", in that the money would be permanently removed from Football. That should be compared to player wages though, no player fees.

I get that but the money has to come from somewhere to begin with, which in the case for oil barons for example is directly from them. City wouldn't have had the money to buy Robinho et al had it not been for that money coming in. What I am saying is that money could have been used for something a little more morally/ethically productive, so it seems a waste for it to be put in the football pot.

Not to mention with the increasing introduction of more of that sort of owner, these transfer fees will steadily increase and I am left thinking "Well why isn't this sort of money being put to proper use?". That said, it is their money, they earned it so they can do with it what they will. I personally wouldn't be putting my money into football if I were a multibillionaire.

Not much of a business man are you.

Marca also saying it's pretty much done now as well, and he'll be unveiled next week.

Yep, if you follow TH's criticism to its logical conclusion, the fault lies with the guy who buys a team shirt, a season ticket or a Sky subscription with money that could have been donated to a good cause or whatever. That's where the money comes from. Once it's in football, there's no difference between it sitting in a club's coffers or being moved from club to club in the form of transfer fees.

Ultimately it's good to have the money moving around, because that's how it ends up trickling down to smaller and smaller clubs and eventually contributing to local communities and economies. Whereas when more of it sits in swollen club bank accounts, more is inevitably paid to players and agents.

Marca also saying it's 99 million euros. No contrao

Got to admit for the amount of money it does smell of desparation on Madrids part.

"buy high, sell low, give proceeds to africa"

Moment of silence for Glaston.

Don't jinx it, he'll be even more unbearable if it doesn't happen. You know, until Spurs massively and predictably bottle it and he disappears for two months only to return next summer with the same inflated expectations.

Yeah. It's an interesting one really. Football in this regard is a unique industry, I suppose the closest equivalent might be bankers getting head-hunted, but I doubt the parallel holds. In what other industry do companies buy from an identical company, improve the product and sell their products to other almost identical companies?

The transfer fees are ridiculous, but they are almost meaningless. Bale is worth 90 million so Suarez is worth 60 million so Benzema is worth 40m. If Bale was worth 60 million, Suarez would be 43 million and Benzema 36m or something. Meaningless. It's slightly like bitcoins. What is one worth? Bitcoins and players both work on supply and demand, but at least players actually generate money.

Players value has gone up because clubs "feel" healthy

Bale is underrated by many on the caf. He, for me, is on a similar level to Ronaldo before he left us. Ronaldo had some things he was better at, but Bale likewise. With current inflation since we solde Ronaldo for £80m, I'd say Bale is worth at least £80m himself now.

BBC: Breaking News: Tottenham and Real Madrid in talks that could see Bale become the World's most expensive player.

That's not really breaking news, is it?

I'm not sure why Glaston puts up so much of a fight over the fact their top players are probably going to be sold. It was obvious that at least one top team would be in for Bale this summer, too insist there was no chance of him moving was sheer delusion.

Spurs are a selling club. Selling a player for £94m however, is nothing to be ashamed about.

Fair play to that Sky Italia journalist, he was spot on like he normally is.

Who's that then?

Ballague said last night that it was close and would be done by Friday.

On Glaston though, I thought he always made it clear that there was no chance Bale would be leaving this year unless it was for silly money? TBF this is the very definition of silly money.

They're a centreback away from having a very good team. Tottenham will have done well out of selling their golden goose for crazy money, kind of like an anti-Liverpool.

Gianluca Di Marzio. Said a £93m deal was very close to being done on Tuesday morning.

Cool. Looks like things are finally happening and thankfully in enough time to start the transfer merry-go-round.

You can almost imagine Levy now sitting on this one until September 1st just to try to feck everyone else up. Course it could backfire on him if Madrid then pull out as they'll be left with 120m of signings and no sensible way to finance them, but I wouldn't put it past him.

Yeah but we still get to laugh at him because Bale's fecked off.

no we don't, we can laugh at ourselves that we only got 100 mil for ronaldo .and he can laugh at real paying silly money

I'll actually miss watching Bale in the PL now. His game was perfect for the league and he wasn't much of a threat to us seeing as he was playing for Spurs.

Levy should be awarded an OBE for his ability to maximise the value of a player and also have the insane ability to buy quality players before anyone cottoned on to the idea they were rich.

Bale can't really win in this situation.

If Ronaldo stays then he will most likely be played out of position or sat on the bench, be dis encouraged to shoot, and probably not have a big fan in the guy he openly admires.

If Ronaldo goes, he has got to replace one of the best players ever, very arguably Madrid's best ever player, that's a shit ton of pressure and I don't see how he can live up to it.

Sure, they're a huge club, perhaps the biggest in the world and certainly the most desirable for most players - but the pressure to play there is already extraordinary, without having to be shackled by Ronaldo or having to replace and live up to Ronaldo.
