Gareth Bale Transfer Speculation | Done

He's an excellent player but that amount of money is nuts. Assuming it's true, what are Real Madrid thinking bidding that, and what are Spurs thinking turning it down?!

Well he clearly was the best. Hence him winning every award going.

Just because you win an award, doesn't make you the best. Did you agree with Bale winning the PFA Player of the Year in 2011? Or when Giggs won the award in 2009? (In both cases, they weren't deserved). Bale is talented and would do well in most teams, but winning an award doesn't "clearly" make you the best. IMO, Suárez and Robin van Persie were both better. At least it can be agreed that he was top 5 players in the league last season, but let's not go overboard with the praise...

Who's said that they are turning it down? I bet you Levy is appearing resilient on the outside, but inside he's throwing a fecking party. There's no way Bale is staying at White Hart Lane if this bid is true.

I thought he was quite clearly the best player in the league last season...

He was the best player of the second part of the season. Taking the entire season into context I think that both RVP and Suarez has been at-least (if not better) as good as him.

Bale was immense last season, definitely the best player in the league. The transfer fee is still madness though. If he had around two or three more seasons like he did last season well then maybe it'd be somewhat justified.

Nah, both had prolonged dry spells too (didn't help Suarez that he got himself banned again though), if you look at their overall influence, and quite frankly, the sheer amount of match-winning, bonkers brilliant goals Bale scored, he was definitely the best.

FWIW RvP wasn't even our best player in the league last season, Carrick was. He had a better season for Arse the year before than he did for us this year.

£85 million for Bale (maybe).
€32 million for Illarramendi.
€30 million for Isco.

I know Madrid are the biggest sports franchise in the world but still, holy feck, how can they spend that much?

Over the whole of the season, I thought Van Persie was the best player in the league. He was definitely more consistent. Bale took a while to get going, plus he struggled in big games, whereas Van Persie was a powerhouse for us and was largely responsible for us dominating the league. Suárez was also great, but IMO he wasn't as consistent.

You acted surprised. I remember a season they spent 80 million on Ronaldo, 60 million on Kaka, 30 million on Benzema and like 10 on Albiol.

 He scored against us, Arse and City.

You're all so bloody biased, RvP was not THAT consistent, he went two months without scoring a goal!

How did Bale struggle in big games? You'll have to run that one by me again.

Also to say RvP was largely responsible for us dominating the league is a fecking insult to some of the other players in our team.

I really don't think it's that bad of a price. He's has the global superstar factor already and that's whilst only playing for Spurs.

It is way more money than he is worth, both for Tottenham and in general. The boy is absolute class and still has room to grow even stronger, enough to easily justify a price tag of 50 or possibly 60 Mil. €, but 100Mil. ?? No way in hell.

The truth is, that the boy had two half seasons on world class level until now. You give him the global superstar factor, but this is mostly the product of an enourmous media hype. To be a global superstar, you actually have to have made a major impact on international football.

I still think, that there is a lot of truth in this story. Real Madrid will overpay in this deal and in the end they will not care that much, because the money is there.

I believe, that they want to send a huge signal with this signing. They come out of a truly dissapointing season: Losing quite clearly in the championship race vs. a Barcelona, which was not even at its best, losing in the cup final to the little brother Atletico and being stopped and for the most part outplayed in the CL by a side, which was as a whole ensembled for less than half the money they paid for Ronaldo. Their thirst for the "decima" goes on and not even one of the, if not the most successful club manager in recent history could give them that.

They are still one of the biggest clubs on the planet , though, and they want to show just that. What do you do, if you can not do that with titles? You make a record signing. In the end, Real Madrid remains, what it is for a long time now: the biggest circus and show in the football world. Full of glamour and stars. And without a CL trophy for over a decade....

I'm actually not biased when it comes to this debate. It doesn't make me biased that I chose Suárez to begin with ages ago, but does Van Persie's goal drought really matter? Voting was done before that, no?

Look at all our big games. Who was the best player on the pitch in most of those games?

Because you brought up consistency, Christ.

I wasn't even talking about the awards, I said Bale was the best player in the league last season, you said he wasn't, now you're bringing the awards up as an excuse, just stop.

Carrick.

Seriously?

Well considering Carrick, Rafael and DDG (as an example) were all comfortably the best players in the league in their positions last season then yes, seriously.

Also when RvP had his two month dry spell we had no problems getting goals from other areas, without Carrick we'd have been utterly feckered.

Carrick.

Carrick was brilliant, but Van Persie turned those games in our favour. Arsenal at home, Chelsea away, City away, Liverpool at home...I could go on.

RVP carried us for part of the season. I think that he was our best player, though Carrick was excellent too. Agree that he wasn't as good as the previous season with Arsenal.

I think that it is a close call between him, Suarez and RVP and personally I think that both of them were better than Bale (said the same in Caf the day he won that award).

Saying all these, I still think that there have been more than 10 players in Europe that had better seasons than him, and 85m for him is ridiculous.

As Revan points out, he came good at the second half to the season. He wasn't a constant throughout like RVP (Madrid games aside) was.

Bale was outstanding throughout. Easily the best player in the league last season.

You've a poor memory if you think RVP was constant; he had his longest goal drought of his career last year!

He did get us a lot of big goals in big games and had an excellent season but I think Carrick was our most important player overall. He literally didn't have a single bad game in the league, without him our midfield would've been in the shitter, without RvP scoring goals for two months we had no issues winning games still (mostly).

I don't understand a world were Gareth Bale is worth £85 million. Only conclusion I can come up with is that Real Madrid have hired Jeff Stelling as their transfer advisor.

Well it's a bit unfair to say that saying as he didn't play in the CL, if you purely take domestic leagues into account he's definitely in the top ten. He was also very good for Spurs in the Europa.

Madrid buy Bale for £85million utd buy ronaldo for £60million- united are £60million out of pocket and Madrid £25million. Utd have a 28 year old and Madrid a 24 year old.

Who gets the best deal?

He was still good in general play even if he wasn't scoring. Bale had a similar drought at the start.

Carrick.

I was talking about the awards, though that wasn't clear in my post. As for Bale's record in big games, let's actually take a proper look. He played Chelsea twice and didn't score or assist. This is using your flawed logic of looking at goals to say that he turned up, which is a bit absurd. In both games, I remember him looking out of depth, plus Adebayor was the best player on the field in the second league encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham. Against us, he scored one goal at Old Trafford - I'll give him that, but his performance was hardly impressive. In the second encounter, Jones and Rafael nullified his threat. Remember, Bale reverted to taking lone range shots (almost scored with one of them). Against Manchester City (away), he looked poor. Spurs were poor throughout. In the second game, he was immense (one goal and one assist). He scored two in two against Arsenal, one in the loss, and the other win in the 2-1 win. Make sure you remember the context, that I'm clearly referring to the awards (you know that now) so that means that some of these performances don't count...

He was still good in general play even if he wasn't scoring. Bale had a similar drought at the start.

And Bale wasn't?

Let's not forgot that he was playing in quite an inferior side to ours.

If we were comparing the RvP of 11/12 to the Bale of this season then it'd be a much tougher call but there's no way in hell RvP was as good as him this season. Bale was comfortably the best overall player in the PL. His goals were fecking ridiculous!
