Player of the Year winner Bale ready to commit to Spurs
Gareth Bale will be crowned the PFA's Player of the Year tonight. And Arsenal's Jack Wilshere will be named Young Player of the Year at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel event.

And there's cause for a double celebration for Tottenham fans as Bale, their 21 year-old superstar, is ready to confirm his commitment to the White Hart Lane club.

Despite signing a contract extension until 2015, the 21-year-old has been linked with a host of European giants leading to fears Tottenham could cash-in if they fail to secure a top four finish in the Premier League and a place in next season's Champions League.

But Bale said last night: "I am happy at Tottenham. I only recently signed a contract extension. Does that suggest I'm looking to leave the club?

"The thought has never crossed my mind, not at this stage of my career. I owe a great deal to the club and I firmly believe in loyalty."

Not at this stage, so well probably in the summer

We don't need him, and he is not worth the 60 million it will cost to get him.

Obviously it's not Bale's fault but this shows the folly of voting when they do for footballer of the year. He's not done enough to be considered the best player in the league in the last few months yet he's going to win it at the expense of the likes of players who have been really good for most of that period.

I think he's overhyped but Iall things being equal 'd also have him at £30m as he's going to get better and he suits the English game.

I think he will simply because Spurs won't sell coupled to the fact that we won't bid anyway

Don't listen to those mugs. They said the exactly the same about Berbatov. As much as Bale doesnt deserve this award, I'd still have him here :D

Bale isn't coming here muppets.

I don't think they will sell any one of the top trio of Modric, Bale and VDV because if they don't make the UCL next season, it will a nice challenge for them to get back in it and it might spur them to perform better next season. All this talk of Tottenham competing for the title is not going to happen anytime soon.

Once Bale loses a yard of pace he'll be shit. Do not want.

A bit of an exaggeration, but I know what you mean. Pace is a massive part of his game.

He reminds me a bit of Lee Sharpe. Sharpey developed other aspects of his game - he became very good in the air, pretty good in front of goal etc. It remains to be seen if Bale can add more to his locker, which at the moment consists mainly of a lot of pace and a good left foot.

He's a left footed, slightly less effective Valencia, but with a British passport.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave this summer, Levy has already suggested they'd have to consider big offers (iirc he said around £30m, didn't he?) and if Spurs don't finish in the top 4 he could well want out now he's had a taste of CL football.

Bale may be overrated by spurs fans, but he is underrated on here. He is easily one of the best wingers in the league at the moment, and is only going to improve. Anyone who thinks he wouldn't massively improve our squad is kidding themselves, him on the left and nani on the right would be unstoppable.

We've got Valencia and Nani who are both young and as good as anything available at the moment, plusthree or four adequate back ups.

I don't think out wide is an area where Fergie will be looking to spend big money on a player. If he does it'd have to be someone who's either significantly better than one of either Nani or Valencia, or who has the potential to be on the same level as Ronaldo/Rooney...Bale is neither of these things.

Sure I've said this before in this thread, but if we do have money to spend, why blow it on an overhyped winger who's barely better than what we've already got (if at all), when we're in desparate need of something extra in the middle of the park?

He's already added the Robert Pires art of being a cheating cnut to his locker this season. Ronaldo style tantrums to follow.

Nani & Valencia pairing > Nani & Bale pairing - pretty comfortably in my opinion.

The only thing about Bale is that there are just so few left footed wingers out there right now, and with the sad fact that Giggsy will be off soon, we'll have none, won't we? All our wingers are right footed. But getting a left footed winger is not worth 40m or whatever it would be.

Nani is perfectly capable with both feet, and he's more effective on the left wing than Bale will ever be, he's so ridiculously unpredictable that he ties fullbacks in knots no matter which side he's playing on, he can cut inside and shoot, or cut outside and cross, or do both and really feck you up.

Hey, don't get me wrong here, I think Nani is a far superior player to Bale and if there were any justice in the world he'd have won the POTY by a mile, but maybe it works in our advantage, keep Madrid away from him.

I'm only saying Bale's biggest advantage, that's all. I think he's vastly overrated apart from that.

He's way over priced. It would get boring also during the season when the build up for every game would be 'Is Bale going to be fit?' as it seems to be each week with Tottenham.

A player who depends to as large a degree on his pace as Bale does, is always a risk as pace is the first thing injuries knock out of a player. Or at least it is what it usually hampers. If Bale's pace took a hammering he's nowhere near the same player.

I think the same, in a sense, could be said for Owen. Injuries made him lose a yard or two, if not more. Whilst still competent in front of goal, nowhere near the same player as he was as a younger man.

Players who don't rely on their pace as much are less susceptible to this decline.

Yea that's fair :)

Bale isn't underrated, the media have created this amazing bubble around him and claimed him as one of the Worlds best.....which he is far from being and that is what I think makes it seem that way. Redknapp hasn't helped him either with some of his comments, much like Martin O'Neill claiming Ashley Young "As good as Messi".

Trouble is if you get touch tight on Bale, when he recieves the ball. He struggles with the opposing player being so tight and his main asset (pace_ is nulified. The lad is a good passer, crosser and strong in a tackle. Trouble is his main form of getting past a player is pace, he hasn't got the skills to get past players when they get close. Teams against United close us down quick and it would work against him, yes I can see Rooney pinging a cross field pass in behind an opposing left back, with Bale skining them for pace and being in. Nani can do that now, as can Valencia.

The £40m odd, it would take to bring him in and in a position that we already have filled with Nani whom has been a much better winger consistantly over the last 18 months than Bale. We would be much better using that cash getting a player that we actually need in the middle of the park.

His pace isn't "nullified" if he gets it to feet or knocks it past you. You also then have to stay touch tight on him despite the fact that he might move all over the place. Much easier said that done.

You make it sound simple - but the likes of Maicon (the "world's best right back") look cumbersome agains him. He also gave Ramos plenty of problems despite only being half fit. Its one thing knowing what you have to do to stop a player - its quite another actually doing it, and all three goals he scored against Inter were virtually the same.

The fact is no full back likes playing against a pacey winger, let alone one with the stregth to push past you and get in a pin point cross. Being able to sling in a decent cross might seem like a staple for a winger but plenty of PL wingers can't so it with any consistency. He's also often "doubled up on" by teams - very difficult to do against United because there are players all over the park who hurt you.

Bale might be overhyped - he's young and British so its no surprise. Doesn't make him any less of a potential star. He's clearly not the finished article but he has all of the attributes to be a really top draw player and is still only a young lad. With the right handling there's no limit to what he might become over the next ten years.

Rafael popped him in his pocket and didn't let him out.

Rafael popped him in his pocket and didn't let him out.

Exactly. It's as if people have been sitting in dark dingy rooms watching the Inter games again and again and again.

Bale is a good young talent, but that is all. He isn't setting the premier league on fire and standing out at all.

Uhmm...yesterday shows that he's easily the best player in the league:angel:

I can see it now. Bale on the left wing. Nani on the right and Valencia in the right forward position with Hernandez on the left and Berbatov with Rooney in the Centre.

VDS
Rafael Vidic Rio Evra
Nani ....................... Bale
Valencia Rooney Berbatov Hernandez

We would kill any team!:drool:

Maybe so. He's a good player and had a very good game against him, doesn't make Bale any less of a player in my opinion. Not having a great game against a team top of the league is hardly unusual - especially when United carry such a threat going forward.

Wayne Rooney's been crap against loads of sides this season, mainly before Christmas. Doesn't mean he's not a top player.

I'm surprised that he won it to be honest. Vidic has been fantastic this season and even with "United bias" he probably deserved it for me.

That said it seems that people in the game very much rate him, or he wouldn't have won.

So you cite fullbacks struggling and when it's pointed out that someone contained him it's because Bale had an off day?

I think Kompany was as good as Vidic, but that's for another time I guess.

Nani > everyone this season anyway.

That team would get raped through the center.

Break the bank for the greatest player the Universe has ever seen!

I agree with some of that - bale IS overhyped by the media, but he would still be a great addition to the squad. His first touch is good enough that staying tight isnt always going to work - as he showed at times against Madrid.

Within our team, nani generally performs better on the right than the left. I think the combined total of bale on the left and nani on the right is a fair bit better than nani on the left and Valencia on the right. Nothing against Valencia, and having all three would be us sorted on the wings

Perhaps. He's a top player - Vidic would maybe would shade it for me over him purely in context: top of the league with a supposedly weak squad, and without Ferdinand alongside him for a few spells and has still been immense.

Nani will never win anything voted for by players or fans until he stops rolling around on the floor.

So you cite fullbacks struggling and when it's pointed out that someone contained him it's because Bale had an off day?

No. Read my post again. Rafael played very well, and is also a very good young player who on the day had the best of the battle.

I do happen to rate Gareth Bale and for the most part have been very impressed in the games I've seen him play. A young player who in his first season in the CL did very well against good sides and I think that deserves a certain amount of respect, largely because very few players step up that quickly at a young age (the last one I can remember being Wayne Rooney on his CL debut). I don't see how that's particularly controversial.

I don't happen to think that for a player to be a good prospect he has to play well every single game. You could point to pretty much every player in the world and find a game where a particular player bested him.

To my mind Bale's main weakness is that he is injured or half fit too much of the time.

Left footed winger, player of the year. If Spurs miss out on the top 4 you can see the top champions league clubs queueing up for him.
