Signing Bale is not a bad gamble to make if and only if he will accept a pay cut. There is hardly any wide forward available today that is on his level. As a cushion I'd also sign Ozil on a bossman who can play as a wide forward too if Bale doesn't work out. Let's be real £60m in today's market is bread for a player of his calibre.
In January though I'd love to see us go for Mahrez, Goretzka and Sandro. Goretzka now because in summer it would be harder with the likes of Bayern lurking around. Sandro will be easier to sign I reckon if we pay up. I believe we have a relationship with Juve and I'd love to see us maximize that in this regard. Signing Mahrez in January on the other hand would require Mahrez showing that he wants this move badly.
In the summer, I'd love to see our starting eleven look like this:
De Gea
Meunier Baily Rojo Sandro
Goretzka Matic Pogba
Mahrez Martial Bale
Or:
De Gea
Meunier Baily Rojo Sandro
Goretzka Matic Pogba
Mahrez Martial Ozil
Or:
De Gea
Meunier Baily Rojo Sandro
Ozil Matic Pogba
Mahrez Martial Bale
You are probably asking, where is Lukaku? I really do think the fluidity of that front three would be very mesmerising and with the balance that the midfield trio would provide, I'd back this team to win the league next season. Considering what we are up against given City's form and likelihood to sign more players in the coming windows, we've got to show some ruthlessness in deciding who starts and who doesn't and also who we sign and who we resign.
I reckon Goretzka, Ozil, Bale, Mahrez, Sandro and Meunier would cost us around £260 in two windows whilst shipping out the likes of Shaw, Blind, Mkhitaryan, Mata, Fellaini and Darmian for around £60m.
If signing Bale is a bad idea then maybe we can look at Di Maria who I reckon would not look out of place under a manager that plays to his strenghts and allows him express himself rather than one that always insists on safe passing on top of playing him as second striker today, right winger tomorrow, left wing back the following day and then deep attacking playmaker the other day.
Bottom line is to make our attack more fluid, we need (not one but) two world class wide attacking players. If we were playing a classic 4-4-2 ala Simeone's Atleti or Ranieri's Leicester, then having a hard working Lukaku supporter like Griezmann would be ideal with Mahrez on the right and Martial on the left. Problem here is that you need a double pivot here and so having a Fabinho play alongside Matic rather than Pogba would be ideal and Pogba is the last person you'd want to shaft to the sidelines.
If we must build the team around maximising the abilities of Pogba and Matic then we need to sign two world class wide attackers. That's my case for us considering the option of signing Bale.
Apologies for the long post.
