Yeah he got burned the first time he encountered a wight at Castle Black when he and Ghost defended Mormont.

That bit was deadly tbf. Rewatched it a few times myself.Please god don’t let that shrieking and hollering at the screen during films thing cross the pond though. That would be the end of my cinema going days immediately.
Daenerys' psycho brother got burned with gold in the first season. The power seems to be random I think.
Shame we didn't get to see the night King in more action, all he did was ride around the dragon. Other than that the battle was superb as always.
Jorah the Explorer had some serious HP in that episode

The use of music in “that” scene was terrific. Such great telly.
A few tweaks to get a better episode:
1. Trebuches behind the trenches, guarded and controlled by a fraction of the unsullied. Everyone else up on the walls. Fire at the enemy until they reach the trenches, then light it up and keep firing. When the fire start to burn out, retreat and defend the walls.
2. Position the dothraki on a nearby height. When everyone have retreated to the castle they can flank the enemy and cut through them from the side. Would have been cool if they showed what they could do by cutting through the enemy once, but then at the return the WWs came on horseback and showed what they could do by destroying the entire dothraki army.
3. Dragons helping the dothraki until the fog came in, and night king shows up and blast a hole hole in the walls (which the unsullied btw. should have been able to defend excellently up until that point). Ensue the following dragon fight.
4. Many of the main cast could defend the opening in the walls Helmsdeep style, before realising they will get overrun. Here the unsullied could have had their big moment, allowing the remaining forced to retreat to the citadel or something.
5. Follow through with the rest of the episode. Escpecially the Arya line were brilliant. Maybe the Hound could have been put off by the NK dragon blast instead of the planned lighting of the trenches.

And Lyanna, her whole body crushed and every bone in her body broken pretty much, i would have thought ordinarily this would have paralysed her yet she still managed to move her arm to kill the giant. What a hero.
Tongue in cheek aside, great episode and superb effort. Bit disappointed the NK was killed pretty easy without having a chance to wield his sword, or to even hear him speak would have been cool.

Not all Targaryens are immune to fire (Viserys a good example) and he burned his hand in the book trying to save the Lord Commander from the wights. They even showed that in the show

It was a bit, yeah. My main gripe was that after all the years of building the NK as some sort of serious threat, he gets axed in one episode. That’s pretty lazy, but it was expected ever since the show no longer had the books to work with.
I was watching on Skygo and had to quit after 10 minutes and drive to my parents house. Watched it in HD there and thought the quality was still shit! Needed Ultra HD, which they don’t have, yet their TV is OLED. Expected better. Literally needed to go to the cinema to be able to see the true quality otherwise.

He was always getting taken out in one single moment.Realistic military tactics are more fun. GRRM heavily researched medieval battle tactics/strategies before writing the books and they reflect that, all the better for it. The early seasons of the show were the same, pretty realistic depictions of combat/battles/logistics etc and it benefited from that I think. Just because there are fantasy elements (flying zombie dragon) doesn't mean you need to abandon all logic elsewhere.
People just found leading the trebuchets unguarded dumb and an unsupported cavalry charge in to the darkness a bit stupid too, which you know .. it kinda was.

Horses aren't the most mobile on narrow modern structures. They hardly found it difficult to scale the wall anyway.
Horses charge. You're losing your units biggest strength allowing an enemy to come on to you. Besides, it's all justified in that epic scene.
Her magics have been inconsistent the entire show, and she was noticably shaken by the hordes of undead clawing their way towards her.

We had about 3 seasons demonstrating how awesome the faceless men, and Arya by extension, were.

That was a truly magnificent episode. I feel at this point, GoTs has lost its ability to shock, and so people are expecting something impossible to produce. The show couldn't forever be about political maneuvering, witty conversation and subtle plays. At some point we all knew there was going to be a coalescence of all the major characters in a big feck off battle. There needed to be a culmination of the bonds and relationships built over the last 8 years, and so a little suspension of disbelief is OK.
Looks like my TV settings aren't off after all, was really dark at times, guess they did it on purpose.

I mean the battle was decent... But it's not on the level of Battle of the Bastards or Hardhome... I mean i could barely tell what was going on for the first half of it with all the quick cuts/fog/dark etc... I was watching in HD so it can't just be me surely?
I also don't understand what their battle strategy was meant to be? (Could someone outline this for me?) What were the Dothraki doing? And what were John and Daenerys meant to be doing? Why didn't they start by setting some walkers on fire? In fact, why was John on a dragon at all?! He did literally nothing in this episode... Which is kind of bizarre.
Still, at least all the brown folk died first...
There were still some really cool shots and moments (lighting all the swords / raising the die) and the production level was obviously high... I just wish I could have made it all out/ followed it a bit better!

I watched it again tonight and set the TV to 'Dynamic' and it was much better. Also put it through the surround receiver which was better too.
She was really fecking old, and the amulet was the only thing keeping her alive. Her sole purpose was to defeat the Night King, and once that happened the Lord of Light had no more use of her.
I know. It’s just that it kinda felt cheap or rushed if you get what I’m saying. I would have expected him to be the reason for many more major character deaths but they decided to take the easy way out. We had this whole farewell scene in episode 2 and yet every single person in that scene survived somehow. So now we're on course for a boring Cersei v Danny battle, with a standard happy ending. We've also spent 3 episodes of this short season building up a hugely damaging battle.. only for Ed Tollet, fire sword guy and side character Theon being the main casualties.
But the show started to become very movie-esque ever since they stopped having the books to draw off of (of which blame lies with GGRM), so I'm not disappointed. Was a great 90 minutes of TV from a pure production point of view, but not so much the plot. I think anyone actually looking for a decent plot should wait for the books, but they're not likely to come anytime soon, so we're just left in a weird limbo of imagination.

I think they were supposed to be waiting for the NK to go for Bran and then they'd spring the dragons on him. But when Dany's horse guys got killed she went rogue and Jon followed? That was the "The NK is coming"/"The dead are already here" exchange they had.
Agree, even in a fantasy setting you need some grounding and common logic for the story to gel.
Horses don't charge with zero infantry support, unless you're talking about proper mounted Knights with lances/plate armour.
Light cavalry engaging in a frontal charge unsupported is suicide. They will be bogged down and cut apart as soon as they lose momentum. All effective light cavalry units throughout history harried the enemy with arrow volleys, hit the flanks, cycle charged and generally disrupted formations.
That plan was doomed from the start, but they had multiple competent commanders present and they should have known this. If they can't use the mobility of the cavalry then you may as well dismount and fight on foot.
