Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

I'm kinda nervous how Season 8's going to go. Ever since the show overtook GRRM's books, you can see the drop-off in quality. The dialogue isn't as good and the twists aren't as good, and you get the feeling that there's that big 7 characters who since Season 6, you know they've got plot armour and won't die unlike between Seasons 1 and 4 where you don't know what the fecks going to happen.

There is a sense of fan-fiction at times with D&D's writing.

I really hope they don't release a full Trailer at all, just want to see with fresh eyes. That promo trailer I don't mind because no doubt it's not a scene from the show but you guarantee if they release 2 minute trailer you'll have all the boffins out with speculative heads on weeks before the first episode. Sky will show it non-stop in between their adverts aswell, be near enough impossible to avoid when watching the football.

Yeah I'm the same managed to avoid everything so far, a bit gutted that Jon's statue was mentioned on the previous page and hoping it is just the promo shot

Definetly just promo, if you haven’t seen it when you do it’s pretty obvious it’s just promo from the way it’s shot and what else is in it.

Yeah I won't be watching it anyway but cheers for clearing that up

Dissect University had a field day yesterday despite there not being much in that promo. Give these muppets just a few seconds of promo footage and it's enough fuel to keep them going for weeks.

Dialogue defo isnt as good, but I also think now that we are at the end game, twists arent needed, and I think the plot armour will be lifted. 6 episodes left so im certain its not gonna be build and just be blockbuster episodes.

I've just taken a look at the betting sites and they have Bran Stark as a massive favourite to rule at the end.

Its a noticeable drop alright, its hit walking dead levels of writing the last couple of season but at least its getting done. It feels much more disjointed and rushed since For The Watch for sure but I think its the only way to get it finished without taking something stupid like 15 seasons or pulling a GRRM and giving up while pretending you are going to get it finished.

I'm more worried about the ending. Them feckers tends to leave some olive branch hanging for "future exploitations" and leave the series hanging.

I do wish they end it clearly and not in some sopranoes kind of mess. But i doubt GOT would be finished neatly with only 6 or 7 episodes.

They’re making it up on broad strokes given by Martin. They’re doing a decent job (it’s not brilliant I agree) in my view and people forget that most tv shows get worse in quality as they go.

Book 4 + 5 are fecking shite anyway. The quality drop off started with the author.

I think their “future exploitations” (if I understood you right) will take place in the past or in different times anyway. Although it would be impossible to finish all the storylines (in books as well as in series), so it would be rushed through like LOST.

Sopranos end was a mess? How dare you.

Martin/DnD wish they could write television like that.

I’m hopeful that the White Walkers aren’t just some plain old antagonist at the end for everyone to team up and beat. I don’t think it’ll be the case even by D&D but it’d be outright stupid if that happened.

One of my theories at the moments with the White Walkers is that they’re attacking to protect themselves as they’re endangered (not many actual WWs are seen) and see the Wildlings as an annoying fly that won’t go away and the Nights Watch and therefor Westeros not fulfilling their end of a deal that once had. All the early season scenes of them sending messages to the Nights Watch using Wildling and NW corpses could saying ‘Please leave our territory’, then when they see the NW and Wildlings team up, their suspicions are confirmed and that they’ve broken the deal or they’ve teamed up to the WWs annoyance.

So Jon Snow could have been the one who put the WW into full on war mode instead of the ever increasing intimidation tactics, with teaming up with Mance Rayder being the straw that broke the camels back.

Moving away from the weirdness or quality of the statues, I think every Stark does not get a statue there. Only the important ones from history get one. So does that mean all three are deemed very big players of the Stark future or would make some remarkable achievements in the war with the Others.

Then what about poor Bran? is he no longer considered a Stark? Or maybe hes going to be the one coming in that they are scared off

WARNING LOADS OF SPECULATION
I’m going to go with.
it’s Sams baby they are after and the only reason they have breached the wall is due to that baby and a touch of what you’re saying. The baby was promised to them so they could replenish their numbers or continue living as who knows if they are immortal or not.

What I think is going to happen which is a little weird is
so basically the North and Dany’s Troops are going to fight the whites, lose Winterfell, head south, and be sandwiched between two armies, except the golden company will have joined them upon discovering who Jon is and the red woman and her army to boot, they defeat the whites turn around and go after kings landing and I fear this will be rushed as seems like a lot to fit in, in only 6 episodes even if most are more like 80 minutes long as reported, more than likely 5 episodes as I can’t see the whites arriving till the end of episode 1 and even that seems rushed.

Just got the fear it’s not enough episodes to fill in everything without massive weird time jumps like the last series creating just a bit of a mess.

Quite interesting.

Im wondering, what needs to be wrapped up / happen:

-Jon meeting up with Arya (Stark kids reunion)
-reveal of who Jon is
-Jamie joining Dany? hmmm
-Yara going after pirateman
-Pirate man and Cersei planning
-War between Wights and Danys army - war of the dragons...
-Danys army war with Cersei

Does seem quite a lot for 6 episodes

The only thing I’m sure of in season 8

episode 5 of season 8 will be the best battle in the history of tv. It’s being directed by Miguel Sapochnik

Yeah, the one thing they’ve still managed to do brilliantly since the drop-off in quality after S4 is battle sequences. Hardhome, BotB, Spoils of War...

S8 should have at least one greatest-of-all-time candidate battle.

Just rewatched season 3 episode 10

the foreshadowing of Walter Frey eating his sons in a pie is unreal, it’s even bran telling the ghost story to hodor et al. There’s also some heavy foreshadowing that Arya will be the one to kill cersei

I started a re-watch last night, watched 3 episodes. Can't believe how much has happened in those first 3. Completely forgot about that.

Lots of time travel and an overly fast pace. The first few seasons weren't as great as the latter ones.

The 3 nights watch men got from the castle to somewhere the WW roamed and then made it to winterfell in the space of three scenes

But clearly months have passed since then. There's no scene anywhere in between that indicates it was a short amount of time.

The first season had time jumps, yes, but not time travel. The seventh season was full of time travel.

Yeah, some people struggle to understand the difference between time passed and time travel for some reason.

And some people pull out the time travel card instead of finding a way to tell themselves it was just time passed.

The beyond the wall party had enough food and supplies for a month and beric was lighting fires for days. Gendry got plenty of rest on his marathon run too.

Yeah they were just sitting there on that rock in the middle of a frozen lake, surrounded by zombies for a few months. Suddenly, after months, the lake freezes over eventually, and the zombies start walking up, and coincidentally, after leaving weeks, maybe months ago, Dany arrives at the exact same time, again, after weeks/months of riding.
