Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

I think some of my underwhelment (don't get me wrong - I don't think it's bad or anythign like that - I think it's been largely good... I just wanted more from Joff's eventual death) comes from the fact that I heard a fair few book readers tell me the fallout from Joffery's death was AMAZING ... where as I don't think I'd class what we've seen in Kings Landing or with Littlefinger as amazing...

Obviously, stuff can still play out... we'll see.

Joffs death resulted in:

Iron Bank giving Stannis backing
Stannis capturing some of (all of?) the Wildling Army saving the North
Tommen made King
Obe died
Shae died
Tywin died
Tyrion has fled Kings Landing
Varys has fled Kings Landing
Baelish has fled Kings Landing
Sansa has fled Kings Landing
Pod fled Kings Landing
Brienne left Kings Landing

What more can you want? Cheeky fecker!

Filler.

I, for one, can't wait for another season of truly exciting fleeing. The "The Sopranos in Middle-earth" tag will be changed to the more apt "Prison Break in Middle-earth".

The point is, the majority of this could have been achieved without Joff dying... especially as most of it consists of people buggering off.

Also, Baelish and Varys have left - not fled.

And lets be fair... who really cares about Stannis?!

I care about Stannis!

Did Varys flee, I thought he was just waiting for the ship to leave. I couldn't imagine him leaving King's Landing.

I make up words too.

Amazed at how deeply people are thinking about Shae and Tyrion. For me it's pretty simple - Shae really did love Tyrion and to her, with different values than your average Westerosi, sending her away was the ultimate act of betrayal rather than a good deed, and the fact he tried to pay her a huge hunk of money to go was just the icing on the cake. So the perfect chance for revenge was to become Tywin's whore.

Basically this

Underwhelmedness?

I was thinking the other day (scary, I know), there should be a word called whelmed. Not under or over whelmed, just ... whelmed. Largely pointless and utterly meaningless but I feel it should take off.

"That's Stannis Baratheon, the rightful king of Westoros, son of Robbie Coltrane, father of Santiago Munez and neighbour of whothefeckcares."

I'd totally be on board with all things Stannis if he was played by the hero that is Jason Statham.

Though I always thought they should have got Paddy Considine

I make up words too.

Don't deny that it fills an important word gap in the English dictionary. We need this.

I'll second this

You know what has always irked me about Ned being this 'honourable man' how does he end up having a son with a random woman. I do like Jon Snow, he Arya and Brann have a big part to play. I think one of them will die before this whole thing is up though.

I thought he did, I should probably rewatch the episode. But I thought he left the boat and was walking towards the castle when the bells started tolling and he was like "oh shit!" I better vanish! "quick on to the boat!!!".

They say you always need a woman after a battle. Catelyn wasn't around at the time of Robert's Rebellion.

Who do you think the mother is?

He did leave on the boat - but it looked more like he thought "Hmm... shits kicking off here, not sure I can be arsed with this" ...

There looked to be no reason why he couldn't stay in Kings Landing if he wanted to.

Well Priestess Porn Demon Snatch Lady gave Jon a long lingering look. Although I think Jon and her will probably get it on considering he has a fancy for redheads.

Suppose so, I took the reasoning of that scene as "feck I'm going to be caught here, let's get the feck outta here."

I mean it did seem very late in the Evening/Morning for him to be walking around in the docks so shortly after Tyrion escaped. Doesn't take a genius to put two and two together.

Stannis was apprised of white walkers threat at the end of last season and he showed more interest in that info that any one else. But I think to maintain an element of surprise they did not give any hints of his plan the whole season. Ideally they should have showed him having discussions about going North at some point

Seems like a deus ex machina, there's no way we could've known that he was planning a raid north of the wall, let alone the coincidence of his timing. Was a very clumsy episode, though, they tried to move all the stories along in one episode.

I agree they should have offered a scene somewhere in previous episodes that hinted toward where they were going after the Iron Bank. One moment looking into the fire (ages ago) wasn't enough. Then again I think they wanted the impact of a massive surprise appearance to get Jonny Snurr out of shit.

Looks like I'm not the only one who didn't pick up on whatever "hints" the others say were dropped regarding Stannis' march to the wall..

I wonder if the book readers would've predicted Stannis' march to the wall while they were still reading the books..

..

I expected Stannis to show up north of the wall - it had been mentioned when he got that letter about the north, Melisandre immediately said he must take his army north, and we basically hadnt heard from them since. Obviously they were trying to keep the element of surprise.
....

I hate to be the one to tell you this Cina, but you just invented an 800 year old word. You donkey.

whelm
[hwelm, welm] Show IPA verb (used with object)

1.
to submerge; engulf.
2.
to overcome utterly; overwhelm: whelmed by misfortune.
verb (used without object)
3.
to roll or surge over something, as in becoming submerged.

Origin:
1250–1300; Middle English whelme, apparently blend of dial. whelve ( Old English gehwelfan to bend over) and helm2 (v.) ( Old English helmian to cover)

Agreed with the less column but I would add Hodor (god), Melisandre, Davos and Mycroft Holmes in the More column.
