Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

Quite fecked off that this episode. I was far more interested and pumped up to see what was going to go down in Kings Landing with Tyrion, and to see what happened at the Eyrie with Sansa and Arya finally meeting up, and Sansas image change/Baelish etc.

Basically, they devoted an entire episode to a storyline which I wouldnt even have put in my top 3 at the moment, and have left us with 1 episode to give a satisfactory conclusion to the rest of the storylines until next season. Some secondary characters died, boo hoo hoo, and there was a lot of shouting, about 5 different people telling archers how to shoot a bow (which is apparently impossible with constant instruction), and Sam got enough screentime that I actually thought he might finally be about to die, only to be let down again.

At least they appear to have wrapped things up at the wall until next season so next week we can get back to the more interesting plots.

Just read a random review on a Metal Music website which listed 22 "Metal Moments" in the episode, quite an amusing read. We may argue but at least we're not "Metal".

"A smokin’ redhead gets tired of dudes sitting around, talking s—, and tells them to shut the f— up. Tough girls are metal."
No.1: At the Wall, in the calm before the fire-and-blood storm, Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly — a.k.a. Sam the Slayer — talk about compromising your values to score a hot chick. Which is metal. And human. And nothing gets to the heart of the human condition like heavy metal.
No. 2: In the wildling camp, a white-eyed warg magically swaps his mind into an owl. That is magic, and it is metal.
No. 3: A smokin’ redhead gets tired of dudes sitting around, talking s—, and tells them to shut the f— up. Tough girls are metal.
No. 4: Cannibal skinheads who look like they escaped from ‘Hellraiser’ are metal, though technically they’re hardcore, which technically makes them crossover, which counts. Technically.
No. 5: A great horn sounds doom in the darkness. Metal!
No. 6: A giant f—in’ fire spreading as far as the eye can see is metal.
No. 7: Fighting 1,000-to-1 odds is metal.
No. 8: An undervalued, plain-assed dude discovering his inner strength, stepping up and getting some play from a cooler girl than he might necessarily deserve? Metal.
No. 9: Mammoth. Giants. Giant mammoth. Giant riding a giant mammoth. M-m-m-m-metal.
No. 10: A giant with a giant longbow spearing a dude from 700 feet below is more metal than U.S. Steel.
No. 11: An enraged giant, the last of his race, punching his way through an impregnable gate, then lifting it and heading inside, ready to fight. Metal.
No. 12: As a small band of Night’s Watchmen gird up their loins to fight the last giant, being the sword in the darkness is about as metal as it gets — especially in a world with no electric guitar solos.
No. 13: A weaponized white wolf springing into action, in the middle of a battle, no less? Metal.
No. 14: The Thenn Lord smashing Jon Snow’s face into an anvil is literally and figuratively metal …
No. 15: … as is Snow ending the exchange with a ball-peen hammer to the cannibal’s head.
No. 16: Losing the girl you love accounts for at least 25 percent of all poetry. And love gone morbid is metal.
No. 17: DEATH BY GIANT SWINGING ANCHOR is metal as f— in every possible sense of the word.
No. 18: Future Album Art Alert: A dismembered hand posthumously clinging to a chain hanging from a frozen wall? Do you even have to ask?
No. 20: A barbarian leader with like 20 kills to his name still fights to the last, with three arrows sticking in his torso. That is metal, and we salute his gumption, even if he is a d—.
No. 21: Making it through a long night, living to fight again and walking boldly into certain doom is metal. The end.
No. 22: P.S. In the credits, Band Name Alert: Wolf Unit. Metal.

Overall Rating: Solid-sharp-bloody-steel metal.

The show has been hinting for absolutely ages that the real danger is at The Wall and that the squabbling in the rest of Westeros and subsequent lack of attention on the The Wall could doom everyone. If you weren't expecting a showdown at The Wall, you haven't been paying close enough attention. And it ain't over by a long way yet, whatever about Mance, the White Walkers are still out there.

I was shaking through half that episode. It was blooming brilliant! Yeah so there wasn't much plot gain, but not every episode has to be about pushing the plot forward. What we got was a terrific battle and more character deaths! While developing the characters that did survive.

You're not metal at all, you pussy.

Plus the episode was called 'The Watchers On The Wall' ;)

Yeah that's been the major thing all along for me, there's families at war, wildlings attacking the wall, but the Whitewalkers are the real deal and it may take another few series but they're coming, and when they do shit is going down.

It was great, the shows got to the point now where you have no idea who will live and who will die and when it will happen. So any character surviving a battle like that deserves some props! I was convinced Sam would get taken out by Slevsbitch, he didn't even get a scratch!

He's too big to miss, he was like feckin splinter cell sneaking round the black castle not being noticed.

Oh yeh, out of interest, who is Mance? I initially thought he was the big ginger bearded bloke but obviously he's been captured. I assume he is the wildling leader, but have we actually been introduced to him on screen yet?

Yeah he's been in it before, he's the oldish bloke with black hair. He's not been seen for a while though.

I expected a showdown, just not an entire episode dedicated to it. This is a season with 10 episodes, to dedicate 10% of the entire airtime to what is essentially just a glorified skirmish (I say this as they didnt actually "beat" the Wildlings, they just held off the first wave...there are fecking thousands of them) seemed....wasteful.

The season has had some cracking moments but on the whole I have felt like everything has been far more drawn out and more filler than previous seasons. Still head and shoulders above pretty much anything else on TV, but it almost feels like they are trying to draw things out a bit more, maybe to get an extra season or two out of the original material, to milk the IP for what they can.

The above probably sounds a bit harsh, but thats the general vibe im getting at. An entire episode dedicated to what wasnt even the most interesting story going on at the time? Meh. I was pumped up for tonight to see what happened in Kings Landing and at the Eyrie. The wall should absolutely have had some screentime - and if the battle was taking place, probably quite a bit over this episode and the finale next week. Its just dedicating an entire episode to a relatively meaningless battle that I cant understand.

As viewers, we know the white walkers and wildlings are a big threat, but so little attention has been given to any of them this season (in terms of characters perception in the show) that it doesnt seem as climatic or as big a deal as the likes of Blackwater. I appreciate it is deliberate that the characters in the show are more concerned with whats going on down south than the "real threat", but then it hasnt really been built up in the best way in terms of anticipation and excitement.

When it started I wasnt so much thinking "Ooooh some shit is gonna go down" as "Thank feck the wildlings are finally attacking the bloody wall, its only taken them 9 episodes to get round to it".

To do this when there were such interesting plots going on elsewhere is crueler than last weeks ending.

Edit: Just saw about next weeks episode being 66 minutes long. This certainly helps satiate my rage.

I would have hated to have seen that strung over two episodes just to break the story. I think it was fine. And I imagine shit will go down with Tyrion in the finale, which is what we are all waiting to see now.

Rome was a great show.

Christ some of you need to just sit back and enjoy it.

"But.. but there was a 2 minute scene that didn't advance the plot whatsoever"

Who gives a feck. Not every scene has to advance the plot. You don't know what's coming. You don't know what scene is relevant. People hate on characters way too easily in shows and I see nothing wrong with Sam & Gilly scenes. They're not the best of course but I think some of you are spoiled with the quality of tv shows nowadays. You expect perfection every week and pick out gripes instead of just enjoying it.

Most of you are fine but a couple of you are right miserable bastards.

Name and shame!

RN too. It's alright to not like it but to come in the thread and moan every single time? It's about as dull as he finds the episodes.

So that's what you have to say? Deal with it. This episode was shite. A lot of others would agree with me.

What happened in this episode that none of expected?

What happened that was exciting to see?

Half of the episode was focused on that obese unfunny Samwel and his cringe worthy cliched "I promise you I wont leave" dialogues.

The battle was confusing to follow itself. In most of the scenes brothers of the nights watch were dying but in the end, they are victorious?

This season has been the worst, but still had some good episodes. This particular one was low quality, repetitive trash.

I think you would be happier watching something else. Not sure what mind.

Remember this fella?

That bit where that random Nights Watch guy died didn't advance the plot at all. Terrible.

Right. Wouldn't this make you think that they (Sam and Gilly) are not just fillers and there will be something coming out of their character development? It's not like they're showing Brienne and Pod walk through the jungles making smalltalk or our self righteous Khaleesi and her army just marching around??

I would think that they've spent time on developing the story arcs of Tyrion/Jaime/Cersei etc etc over the course of the 4 seasons and they're spending time developing the Sam and Gilly storyline. I understand it is not as exciting as some of the other angles, but should they not have time to set it up and make it exciting?

Edit: this was in response to @Eboue's post : https://www.redcafe.net/threads/gam...-ban-real-death.366179/page-149#post-15821466

Edit 2:
Besides, as someone rightly pointed out earlier, as of now, Sam is the only one who's managed to kill a whitewalker. And in the previous episode we saw ginger not kill Gilly and the kid - how someone can just disregard these things as irrelevant is beyond me!

I like Sam as a character. I thought his storyline has developed well and he was great this week. We don't need any more pretty boy characters - there are a sufficiency already.

Wanted the wall to lose and the wildlings and co to take over and keep on moving. Shame.

The way may want the plot to advance we will have finished the entire thing by the end of episode 3 of the next series.

Well said mate.

Sam's got more depth than most, he has gone from a scared newb at the wall to playing an important role for the nightswatch against the wildlings. He's not meant to be a major player and yes he is daft and comedic in some ways but that's ok, not every character has to be super-serious and have a fate/Destiny.

Sam will end up somewhere but I don't think anyone is meant to care greatly, it's the characters we met at the start - the Starks, lannisters, danereys, the battle for the throne. It's called game of thrones not game of fat boy at the wall. It seems like people are so well invested in so many characters that when one is not as important or not as 'deep' as others they're resented because of it.

Maybe that's a back handed compliment to the show that characters mean so much that seemingly everybody has to be on that level. The only real problem with Sam is that he doesn't matter but like I say maybe he isn't meant to, who knows.
