Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

I normally like the evil/bad people not being killed off, as they are so vital to the story & make the show, entertainment-wise. However, Lysa was just annoying. Wonderful ending to that episode. Hope her son is next.

Tyrion and Oberyn steal the show again, that whole scene was brilliant - much better than the trial one, I think. Tyrion's face when Oberyn told him of the story about him as a baby almost had me in tears, I must admit. Felt a wobble. :nervous:

Oberyn is fantastic. He would destroy The Mountain.

Really enjoyed that episode.

First time I've watched on Sky Demand and the runtime was only 51 mins. Could've sworn the episodes were longer in previous seasons?

I think the last season had episodes which were slightly longer, like 56 minutes or so. None of them have been over an hour I'm sure

Saw an interview with Aidan Gillen where he was talking about the voice he puts on, apparently he was trying for a John Huston in Chinatown type vibe. Not even close.

Has The Mountain got an obvious weakness the way The Hound has? I don't remember anything getting mentioned on the show so far.
I thought just from the look of him he'd be slow but Bronn said he's quicker than you'd think.

Oberyn is fecked.

I don't think so - he's not really been explored much, as a character. We TV show watchers don't know anything about him yet, bar his fire incident with his brother. Perhaps that makes it more interesting? Regardless, Oberyn already has a slight advantage (many will disagree) in that he is desperate to kill his opponent, & it is completely personal. He'll be up for it, & i'm sure he won't mind to resorting to a dirty trick if it is indeed his style.

That's the thrust of my idea. I bet the Dornish do things that the rest of Westeros don't.

Jaime said to Brienne that there's three men that might have a chance against him. I assume one is The Mountain (with the other two being Barristan and maybe The Hound). Any other TV show and you'd 100% expect Oberyn to win.

Indeed. I'm backing Oberyn to win this one, but it is Game of Thrones. It seems the good guys don't get cut much slack. However, I won't be surprised to see The Mountain lose - he's being built up as, ehrm, quite the mountain, and everyone knows of his abilities. Oberyn's skills have not been displayed so far, & there has been no talk of his fighting prowess at all. He is also quite average in his build. Perhaps we should expect an absolute masterclass in dagger-wielding. That, or The Mountain will just chop him in two before he even knows what happened. Who knows.

He seems too important (and brilliant) a character to kill off, having not explored even a tenth of his potential - that said, I thought the same of Ned Stark. That didn't work out too well.

Stop reminding me of the fact that George RR Martin just kills off who he wants! :( I didn't care much for Ned or Robb, but I would be horrified to see Oberyn go.

I hope Oberlyn kills that horrible incarnation of the Mountain before he spits out "I'll be baaack"

Honestly I really didn't think he was that bad, and size wise that is what I expected the original one was pretty pathetic, (I've only read the first book, as I don't want to spoil the TV series for myself *please don't ban me!*)

It's been a while since he twisted the knife on us.

Oberyn is A. Likable and B. Seems to have honour (wants to avenge his sister's death plus he is, or his family is, apparently taking good care of Cersei's daughter despite hating her family).

Likeability and honour, that's basically a death sentence in Westeros.

Don't want to risk a ban or anything so I'll spoiler the whole of my speculation:

I agree. They're portraying him as a nice guy and in this season, I don't think we've seen a 'nice guy' die. So I'm afraid he'll have to go!

But what I'm unsure is what will happen if he dies?

Or may be he wins against the mountain but then gets killed by Cersei or someone?

Agree to some extent with VP, I don't think it'd be too bad but literally no one gets where they are meant to be going when you think about it! Will arya and the hound actually make it to the vale, highly doubt it! Will the wildlings actually ever attack the wall? Doubtful! Now Brienne is off on her travels, will she actually find the girls? zzzz Khalesi was doing well, you we're thinking she was getting ever so close to actually crossing the sea and maybe doing what she set out to do in the first place....but noooooooooo! off she goes all the way back again!!!

And to top it all off you've the most boring off all the a-z scenarios Bran!! Sorry even writing his name almost sent me into a coma!!!

:mad::devil::mad:

I don't know what to spoil anymore, probably everything, what's the rules about speculation here?
I think there must be one major fight in the season, usually at the end, and right now there are only two options - Stannis or the wildlings, and the wildlings already have an army that is going to the Wall.

There's nothing to hate about him, is there? He could easily be the protoganist of the show, if it was that sort of story.

That part where Tyrion was tearing up as Oberyn told his story. :(

He is so modern - he looks like he's from 80-s, not from the middle ages. Free love, tolerance to the dwarfs, et cetera et cetera. We don't hit little girls in Dorne too.

P.S. about his fight versus the Mountain - I'm pretty sure that Tywin or Tyrion named him one of the most fearful swordsman in Westeros in this season - it could be a simple flattery, of course, but I don't think so.

Oberyn

The scene with him and Tyrion was my favourite of the season so far.
Brilliant acting by both.

Really hope the lil' flesh wound from that bite doesn't lead to an infection and an early demise for the Hound. That'd be some bullshit and viewers would riot.
Hmm I see what you mean but I still stand by what I said. That looks like "The Way" to the left and it looks like they've decided to take "The Detour" to the right.
I agree that Brienne and Pod took the road to the Vale. Since they were already on the road headed north towards The Wall, the road on the right would represent east. Could lead to an interesting reunion of sorts if Arya/Hound and Sansa/Littlefinger and Brienne/Pod all met up at the Vale.
Sansa is the only innocent one left on the show. She's a genuinely good character who always carries herself impeccably, mostly due to the fact she's a bit of a wet blanket and doesn't know how to bark back.
I actually think Sansa's character has a chance to turn really dark due to her circumstances. Sorta saw that when she slapped her teat-sucking cousin. When she learns to use her womanly charms and harness the power of what's between her legs, we could have a possible Cersei-type character conversion on our hands.

That's a great observation about the east/north roads, you're probably right here.

Speculation regarding the duel -
The thing is it is not just about Oberyn dying. If he loses and dies, so does Tyrion.

Finally someone said it! Oberyn is a great character but I won't be too bothered if he dies, Tyrion is by far the best character in the show though. If they kill him off I'll be gutted not just on a "oh I like that character and don't want him to die" level but mostly on a "well the show just lost 75% of its appeal" sort of way.

So you are saying there is no way Oberyn can lose?

This is probably what I am thinking too, and it would make most sense to the plot

Tyrion can then strut his stuff and Cersai/Tywin cant do shit about it

Good point. It is looking more and more likely, but for the sake of Tyrion's role on the show, I think he may just have a chance. I really hope so - excellent character.

Thought that was a very good example of a placeholder episode - a lot happened in the last episode and this one just had to move things nicely along without having the big hits that the last episode did (bar right at the end...) - and it did a great job of this I thought... good, interesting scenes with some excellent dialogue exchanges... especially that Bronn and Tyrion scene, which was brilliant I thought.

Also, no speaking role for Samwell Tarley and no Bran also added to the overall quality of the episode.

I also liked how, after having the audacity to show a naked mans arse, the show restored the natural order by having Mellisandra be totally naked for an entire scene, for no other reason other then a crap joke about a bath! In most shows, that water level would be well above her tits, in reality, it'd be around half way down... but in Game of Thrones, you clearly only need a low level of bath water.

Any concise review of GoT would be incomplete without a passing reference to Littlefingers accent... Yarghhh, Whatttt the Feccckkkk.

I thought a lot of people have said that there is a chance that Oberyn will die.
I guess they'll find a way to kill the mountain (he's been nowhere around for about 2 seasons now - it's an out of the blue appearance for him) and then also kill Oberyn. One way for this to happen is Oberyn kills the mountain in the combat thereby setting Tyrion free and then Cercei or someone else (Tywin perhaps?) kills Oberyn 'cos Oberyn hates Lannisters and might potentially cause problems for the king something like that.

Are we allowed to speculate in spoilers?

I thought we were allowed to speculate only within the spoilers

EDIT:

But then wouldn't the whole thread be spoilered with only a few 'review' kinda posts?

I would think if its just the show watchers speculating the shite out of the show, we should be fine with speculating without the spoiler tags...

Mods?

I think people need to remember that Tywin is actively seeking to end the rather costly war, having the prince of dorne embroiled in a trial by combat isn't an ideal situation politically. As Tyrion said, the whole trial by combat wildcard was a big blow to him. The option of Tyrion going to the wall was more preferable to put it mildly.
