Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

Speaking of accents, Littlefinger gets a new one every few episodes. I think he's going through a Welsh phase at the moment.

There was definitely an Irish twinge this week.

The Wildling ginger woman's accent is still the worst on the show though for my money.

Perhaps it was just the bit I saw.

There was some blonde woman on a boat with loads of what looked like barbarians, and a couple of dragons. The dragons looked pretty cool, but the boat itself and the sea looked quite terrible.

Then it cut to some woman in red being a bitch, and she just wound some guy up until he got hauled off, and then finally it cut to a woman getting out of a carriage and going into a temple and talking inanely to some kid for ages. Thing is, neither herself nor the kid were capable of acting. That scene was cringeworthy. I forget the rest because it made no impact on me whatsoever!

My main problem was with the CGI, though. What's wrong with actually building and making sets nowadays? All of the backgrounds (the boat, the sea, the inside of the temple) were so artifically-brilliant and over-saturated. The people were in normal tones and colours but the backgrounds were practically glowing; it looked disappointingly fake.

I get that this is a really popular TV show, and my girlfriend loves it (that said, she loves Wheel of Time too, which is hardly known for its excessive quality), but it just didn't grab me whatsoever. The impression I got from friends who love the series (in both its formats), too, was that GRRM is a bit Tarantino-esque in that he uses the like Tarantino does; as a vessel for his love of sadistic torture porn.
Probably budget. It might just end up being cheaper to CGI the set as opposed to building it. TV show budgets are a lot smaller than film budgets in any case.

Cat kind of breaks out in Irish now and then as well.

Exactly.

I am not sure if films are cheaper pound for pound though. Remember that GOT is estimated at taking 9 series to complete. Each series is around 9 hours of filming. With such a large ensemble cast the actors wage bill will not be cheap either. Apparently GOT has a budget half the size of the HBO series Rome. Rome was cancelled due to being unable to turn profit.

It would be interesting to see the balance sheet for a series like GOT. See what the revenue streams from TV and DVD are like and place them against cost of production.

She's meant to be doing a northern acent... but it's terribly over the top.

Not sure what Scottish people you're hanging out with!
The wildlings are the northern-most people so should have the northern-most accent! I've noticed that Arya's accent has gone from cockney to slightly northern.

Also Littlefinger's is the weirdest. Even in The Dark Knight Rises his American accent was strange.

Rose Leslie is Scottish but of the posh variety, so I'm not sure what her normal accent is.

Edit: Posh southern accent

Well that's definitely not a Scottish accent. Must have gone to school dahn sarf.

Funny that you northerners should spot her crap accent. Always sounded ok to me. Takes one to know one, I guess.

Agree that Aidan Gillen's accent is all over the place. Not sure the southern tribes are supposed to have much of an accent though. Just generic BBC English, as far as I can work out.

I didn't realise she was actually Scottish... I've just heard he speak with a posh southern accent and I assumed she was from somewhere down south.

Aye, I know they should... but it's a terrible version of a Northern accent! It sounds like a southern person doing an over the top impression of what they think a northern person sounds like...

Didn't realise he was Irish (which is why I always hear Irish! I assumed American for some reason...) but yeah, his accent is a constant source of entertainment...

Who else... oh the Greyjoy speaks irritates me... not sure whether thats an accent thing or just the way he speaks. Same goes for Samwell Tarly... those episodes where he'd talk about that girl made were incredibly irritating.

That might be intentional. She was a bit cockney back when she was pretending to be Arry.

I wonder if they've just been told to do a generic "grim oop north" accent? It's obviously not set in England, so would be pointless getting them to nail down the subtleties of a Lancashire or Yorkshire accent.

Can see why it annoys you though. Winds me up when Hollywood movies go with a one size fits all "Oirish" accent.

Her folks are landed gentry and after primary school she went to posh finishing schools and London drama colleges and the like I think.

The worst Irish accent I ever heard was here in Oz where they got an obviously Aussie bloke to do the voiceover for some St Paddy's day related radio ad. It wandered from comedy Irish to comedy Pakistani via North Queensland. It was truly cringeworthy.

And it isn't exactly hard to find a real Irish person here.

Thats a fair point actually... probably a good way for them to go about it as well.

I do occassionally have to remind myself that it isn't England from time to time. Suppose thats the good thing about a fictitious place in that they can invent their own rules/whatever. (I always like how characters in GoT can just say random words like "I invoke Sumai" and we all just nod are heads and go "Ah yes, Sumai, well played sir... well played").

Perhaps Westeros is actually just a place of very eclectic accent's and these actors are nailing it to a tee.

I wonder if they vote conservative.

The only accent that confused me was Lord Baylish. I just thought that he was trying to sound like some sort of sinister fellow, he does that very well. Considering that Westeros is a continent set in a mythical world: there is room for artistic license on the accents.

Is it me or is the whole thing is getting really boring, when are we gonna see some real action!!!

Yea I was trying to work out who his saviour was - a random stark banner man or perhaps the bastard of Bolton? I did enjoy the arrow to the face from a yard away.

Wasn't it the same bloke who helped him escape? I just assumed it was him...

Really? I think apart from the occasional slip up, she's passable for Leeds scum in the show.

Edit: I may just be the worst judge of accent ever though

Probably is to most folk... but (as Pogue said) being Leeds scum myself, it annoys me! It's just too... gravelly... or some other word that describes what I mean.

I think some of the gravelliness is actually in her voice, not her performance. I'm from Huddersfield myself so not a million miles away from Leeds.

Aiden Gillen sounds ridiculous in the show, especially at the table in the last episode where his accent was varying every three words he spoke.

Although, I'm not sure how he's ever qualified as an actor, he couldn't even pull off an irish accent in Love/Hate without not sounding Irish despite him actually being Irish.

Do we know who the guy is that caught Jamie and lobbed his hand off?

Not sure exactly but hes clearly devoted to the north.

Whoever has the balls to deny all the wealth you could dream of, and then chop of tywin lannisters golden boys hand, you know hes definitely on your side

Yeah it was the same guy who freed him.

Well yes, its the same guy who freed him however his accuracy with the bow and his "winter is coming" warning leads me to think there's a be a bit more than meets the eye but perhaps I'm reading a bit too much into it.

right now all we've heard is Roose Bolton say "I've sent my best hunters after him"

I was wondering about this too. Thought he might be a Stark spy or something.

True that, I was thinking he was the Bolton bastard at first but maybe not.
