When we bought him Laurent Blanc said that he was surprised because (and I'm paraphrasing and reading between the lines here) Obertan has some confidence issues that need to be addressed. It was like he was saying that he didn't believe Obertan had the mental strength to cope with the pressure cooker that is life at Manchester United.
That does appear to be the case because I've seen him play in the reserves in front of a relative handful of fans and he does the business. Stick him in front of 70,000 at OT and it's like watching a different player.
His touch lets him down, his decision making goes to pot, he's less mobile around the pitch (for the reserves, he often plays right across the midfield and even upfront despite his starting position being on the wing).
Looking at him today, it was like he either doesn't realise or is simply unable to take advantage of the incredible opportunity that he has been presented with.
I always want to see every player succeed at Manchester United but common sense tells you that they can't all possibly make it or we'd have a squad of around 100 players and I'm afraid Obertan didn't do his chances any favours today.
He is lightning fast and will beat any opponent in a straight race to the ball but having won it, I just lost any confidence in him doing anything with it and I think some of his team-mates felt this way too - not a good sign.
