Gabriel Obertan | 2010/11 Performances

He's not even convincing me he knows how to use the bloody thing in that photo

If you watch the video carefully, I think what happens is:

He suddenly has a brilliant and visionary idea of two songs to segue together. But in trying to select the new track, he loses control of his thumb, which goes far too fast and ends up several albums too far ahead of his brain, while his left hand, totally of it's own accord, changes the song he's already listening too.

This means he ends up listening to James Blunt mixing into The Wanted, so he takes off the headphones and puts in a transfer request.

Big drama queens. Obertan has been at the club for nearly 2 years, it's not like this is the first time he's sat next to Ryan Giggs.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, Dan, as it is pretty ridiculous to get upset at Obertan for not talking to Ryan Giggs at the exact moment the camera zoomed in on them.
Sure, had it been us, who got a chance to sit next to Giggs for a day, then we would bug the shit out of him, but to expect Obertan to ask Giggs questions 24/7 because he hasn't performed on the pitch is overreacting on a new level.

I don't watch football while listening to music, but I don't expect others to be like me. If Obertan wants to listen to music and change track every now and again, then he should be allowed to, no matter who he sits next to.

He is allowed to, but it doesn't imply the presence of the sort of "take every chance to learn and go the extra mile to develop your game" attitude that is required if you want to make it at United.

There's no way Obertan couldn't learn valuable lessons about the game from Giggs, but he's not even giving himself the chance.

To be fair, I think this is typical of a lot of young footballer these days - sense of entitlement 'n all that.

You're thinking waaaaay too black/white Dan. I honestly thought you were joking at first.

How do you know that Obertan isn't regularly asking Giggs questions and looking at his movement in training? You don't.

You can't honestly make a conclusion based on 5 seconds of footage.

Well why isn't Giggs bugging SAF? Does Giggs think he's got nothing left to learn?! Sack Giggs, sell Obertan!

He could be taking valuable lessons on the training ground you know?

I was exagerating about constantly bugging him, but I do think that listening to his ipod just shows that it's not even occurred to him that he could be using the experience more constructively.

OK, we all experience things differently, but I just can't see how listening to music while watching football is anything but a distraction.
I can't think of any time that I or anybody I've ever met or heard of listens to music for reasons other than:
a) to help make an otherwise dull experience more endurable - eg a journey
b) as an end to itself, when it is taking up your entire concentraion -eg club or gig.

Neither of those is really appropriate to a football match.

Yes, he could well and hopefully does learn in training, but there are reasons that non-playing squad members are expected to attend the match, and one is that it's a unique environment to observe the team's play and learn from it.

- Ryan, Ryan, do you sink 'e should 'av crossed zat ball?

He's not near enough to him!

Seriously though, Giggs isn't in a position where his career could go either way, and he needs to grab every chance to learn. I bet when he was that age, he was bugging senior pros left right and centre though.

For all you know it could be a voice message he's listening to. Either way it really doen't matter does it.

Mobile phones and headphones should be banned from players during games - not a good advert from players...understandable fans being pissed off with such attitudes.

Ole was a great example of how to watch, learn and analyse games.

I think Bebe's just texted Obertan saying "Hey, fancy sitting next to me for Chelsea, mate? This Giggs is a boring fecker!"

I can see why people would have a problem with it - Bebe and Obertan are the two players who absolutely should concentrate on games they're not playing in as every time they turn up on the pitch they make poor decisions and look far behind the rest of the squad in many aspects of their development.

Why do you think they're obliged to be at games they're not playing in, wearing the club uniform? There's a lot they should be getting from watching both United and the opponents and it's also about showing respect to their club and those that have been selected ahead of you and are out on the pitch. If they're just going to fanny around with their iphones they may as well have stayed at home.

I bet when Beckham, Giggs and Neville were coming up and giving it everything to get into the first team they sat and concentrated like hell on what those ahead of them were doing on the pitch.

What a dickhead. Sorry Gabriel, are we keeping you from doing more important things? At least pretend to show a bit of sodding interest

I'm getting fecked off with this bloke I'll be honest

This is how I interpreted it

Rio has said that the players listen to certain music in the dressing room, which has been specially put together to fire them up before they go out onto the pitch. Could well be that Obertan was listening to some of that. If it helps him then I see no problem.

When Giggs, Scholes and Neville were the same age as Bebe/Obertan smart phones hadn't been invented.

You're comparing two completely different generations. These lads come from a generation where constantly fecking about on phones is the norm. It's what they do. Bugger all to do with how good they are at football, or whether they want to learn anything from watching the game.

Besides, have any of you moaning minnies taken a moment to think that the ball might have been out of play at the time?

Mobile phones might exist now but that hasn't stopped them from being banned in lots of work places - including football dressing rooms.

I suspect they're contractually obliged to be there, and it's for a reason.

Edit: it's also irrelevant whether smart phones were around or not when Giggs or Neville were at that stage - the point is I'm fairly sure they'd have been fixated on the game to learn all they could from those ahead of them. Just because smart phones are around doesn't make that any less a good idea.

I can't believe so much is being made of this. They're kids. Kids listen to iPods.

If it was an issue do you really think Fergie would allow it?

Seems like moaning for moanings sake to me.

Kids dont get paid to listen to iPods, and actually they are Manchester United players, for the time being at least, not kids.

They're not kids - they're in a great position that thousands have tried and failed to be in, and yet they're hardly setting the world alight. In fact, they both generally amble around looking pretty clueless on the pitch.

If we get to the Champion's League final, will you be fine with them displaying that lack of regard for a match their team is playing in?

So had they looked good when playing, they could be sitting with their iPods when they are out of the team?

Talk about storms in tea cups.
