Gabriel Obertan | 2010/11 Performances

I thought he did okay when he was playing on the right. Most of Southampton's good plays came down their left wing, so having a proper right winger really helped put them on the back foot. I'm not sure why Fergie didn't change the system sooner. Gibson is rubbish when asked to play on the right. Does he play behind the front two for the reserves?

Nani came to us a better player but, there are few players that start off as good as he was at that age. Players take time to mature. Obertan came to us injured and took some time getting into the flow of things.

In the pre-season he looked somewhat decent but, then got injured and that kind of stalled him again. His decision making to me was what has been really bad in the games before Southhampton but, from that one game I thought it was better.

He shown good signs of pace and dribbling. Couple that with a little better footballing brain and he may still be a very good player. I don't see him being a super star but, a for good pacey / tricky winger seems to have the tools.

Those who watch the reserves apparently have seen more in him than those of us who have just watched his performances in the first team. Fair enough. He looks nowhere near ready to play in the prem.

Surprised at that if it's true.

I mean, I'd doubt my ability to satisfy Eva Green in bed, but I'd damn sure give it a go.

I am surprised.

But it is inevitable he has almost no chance of making it at United.

I'm not bothered. I never thought he'd cut it here and would leave sooner or later. He's got no chance of first team football here.

May or may not be true, but it rings true in terms of Laurent Blanc's comments about Obertan's psychological issues holding him back when we initially signed him.

Not to mention Obertan's strange comments about how he felt as though he had been forgotten about, after spending a couple of weeks out injured.

He doesn't come across as the most confident of blokes. He's a definite talent but might never have the mentality for United.

I call bullshit, I was just pointing out his mentality issues the other day. I hope he hasn't done something foolish...

Maybe he can go out on loan to a Championship club when the loan window opens for Championship to Conference. Which opens next week I think.

Nani wasnt good enough 13 months back
I'll have faith in his ability till our coaching staff does

That's not a fair comparison. Nani was an in-demand player whom a lot of teams were keeping their eye on, whereas Obertan is a player even his own (then) manager wasn't convinced was going to make the grade and who sent him out on loan because he couldn't get into the first team.

The same faith that has earned him a place in the squad time and time again the last two seasons?

Don't compare him to Nani. He's way below his quality in every way. Nani was better than him when he first joined.

Sure he might become good, but not in the near future and not good enough to be first choice on the right wing for Manchester United. We have Valencia, we have Nani and if we won't have them in a few years we will have money for a replacement.

I'm not comparing him to Nani in terms of ability

expectation levels are different. Obertan cost a lot less and I didnt expect him to become first choice anytime soon with Nani and Valencia looking great last season

The point it, having potential but not fulfilling it isnt something new. I trust the coaching staff to decide whether or not they can get more out of a player.
If they cant, he'll move on. Till then, live in hope
