All 3 United
His tinfoil hat protects him from the Glazers.
One of the few players tonight that looks a good prospect.
Did anyone see Le Tissier (admittedly another ABU pundit) pass judgement on Obertan tonight? He actually said that he'd heard Ober had covered the most distance on the pitch tonight but that was due to him chasing his own first touch!!
I seriously doubted my own eyes for a moment so I was glad to see others on here agree he was pretty good in parts tonight, and never less than decent.
He looked decent. Good first touch and his passing looks crisp too. Needs to sort out his crossing, though. But yeah, I'm happy with his progress.
I don't think he needs any sorting of his crossing, I rather think our forwards need to work with him to know where he will place the ball. When you work the probabilities, a crisp short and sharp pass across goal will most likely lead to a goal. Either an own goal or your strikers will get a tap in. I hate those high crosses when players get into the position Obertan finds himself time and time again especially since we don't boast of any tall or great headers of the ball.
I know Rooney will love Obertan's cut backs, lets wait and see how he will fair with Rooney.

Obertan likes to get into positions B and C and prefers to pass than cross from there. This has always been my way of thinking and I like what he is trying to do. I have not been a fan of crossing, well except when Becks is the one delivering it.
FANTASTIC.
I do agree with your points though, and I must say I like the look of this lad, Fergie plucked him amongst the Bordeaux quality as the most unlikely of suitors and he's looking the part... Gouffran, Gourcuff, Saivet, all could have been more likely signed but nope, Fergie knows
Are you suggesting that Obertan > Gourcuff?
Doesn't really connect with his team mates yet, but looks promising all right.
Yup. The one major positive on an evening full of 'meh'.
Certainly...That point where he suddenly burst through 3 players and struck a left foot shot towards the corner was a real "oh, he can do that sort of thing can he?"...moment. I know we're all being fairly knee-jerk here, but from a summer of transfer 'meh's' and a fair few 'meh' performances, his surprising instant impact (ish) has been quite a boost....No sign of those 'psychological issues' yet, touch wood, fingers crossed etc etc
All the "how he runs comparissons" seem to have missed the obvious (and cliched) one - Henry. He has the same languid, loose armed glide that Monsieur Theirry has.
The most exciting thing, or certainly the most sensible thing, is that he seems to know already when to release it and when to run with it. He hardly gave the ball away last night, which is something young players often get stick for...the fact he's already got this down shows the potential is ripe right now. Nani should be shitting bricks..
I would like him to take more risks. He seems to go for the safe option too much, cmon man you're sposed to be young and brash!
What I liked about him is that he wasn't very "nervous" or anything close to it, confident on the ball and he was trying things he rarely did in France

nice marchi...nice..
I'd like to see him be given a role in every game from now, like Ronaldo was. Whether it be a 15/20 minute cameo in every game for the next 5-10 matches, or if he gets a starting role and plays 60 odd minutes.
The few times I saw him play on TV he was too indecisive. He would get the ball, run, look around, run again, try something clever, get tackled and lose the ball (like Nani can be) and looked greedy. He still has that potential for indecision now but since he is a small fish in a big pond his greed is diminishing and playing with better players is obviously helping him.Did you watch him much in France?
Has he improved massively since then?
Maybe this back injury really was hindering him?
Feck knows but I'm mystified as to how he didn't get his game at Bordeaux

He did well last night generally and I look forward to seeing him develop into a kidney-headed regular.
We've been without one of those for far too long.He did well last night generally and I look forward to seeing him develop into a kidney-headed regular.
Obertan is hungry for more
Gabriel Obertan is hoping for a Carling Cup hair of the dog to cure a European hangover. The 20-year-old French winger emerged from United's Champions League disappointment with more satisfaction than most. Sir Alex Ferguson's faith in his next generation wasn't rewarded against Besiktas as the young Reds flopped 1-0. But once again £3m Obertan's raw contribution stood out. His chance could come again next Tuesday night with the League Cup quarter-final tie against Tottenham at Old Trafford. Fergie kept faith with his kids all the way to Wembley and success in the final against Spurs last season. He is likely to be forced to stiffen the youthful ranks against Harry Redknapp's free-scoring side but Obertan looks set to get a reprieve.
"The Carling Cup is a good opportunity for players who haven't played much and I hope I can take it if I play next week against Tottenham," said Gabriel. "It was a disappointing night against Besiktas. I really wanted to put in a good performance. I wanted to score and to lay on an assist and be efficient. I think I will have another chance and I will take it. I just want to be in the squad every game. Even a few minutes on the pitch is a bonus. I want to do more. I have not scored yet. I have not made an assist. I have put in some good performances but they've only been short appearances when I came on as a substitute. I want to do more than that. I think I could do more. That's what I am wishing for. I want to score and lay on goals. That is my target."
Obertan was an unknown arrival from Bordeaux during the summer and spent four months after joining the Reds overcoming a back injury. Now he's closing in on full fitness. "I don't think I am fully match fit yet. I worked hard for four months and did weights and running. I think I will be 100 per cent very soon. I just need some more match rhythm. The more I play the more that will come. I just want some minutes to play."
Inevitably, being a right winger with a few tricks in his locker Obertan has drawn comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo. But the French youngster dismisses that extra pressure. "I am not Ronaldo's successor. I just try to be Gabriel Obertan," he added. "There is no comparison for now. I have only been here for six months and I cannot do what he did in that time."
