Did anyone see Le Tissier (admittedly another ABU pundit) pass judgement on Obertan tonight? He actually said that he'd heard Ober had covered the most distance on the pitch tonight but that was due to him chasing his own first touch!!

I seriously doubted my own eyes for a moment so I was glad to see others on here agree he was pretty good in parts tonight, and never less than decent.

Seen it , and he calls himself an expert, god help us

He looked decent. Good first touch and his passing looks crisp too. Needs to sort out his crossing, though. But yeah, I'm happy with his progress.

I don't think he needs any sorting of his crossing, I rather think our forwards need to work with him to know where he will place the ball. When you work the probabilities, a crisp short and sharp pass across goal will most likely lead to a goal. Either an own goal or your strikers will get a tap in. I hate those high crosses when players get into the position Obertan finds himself time and time again especially since we don't boast of any tall or great headers of the ball.
I know Rooney will love Obertan's cut backs, lets wait and see how he will fair with Rooney.

He did hit quite a few crosses against the first defender in good positions. Macheda is good in the air, and attacks the ball well.

He needs work on his crossing, shooting.. very raw but alot of potential.

Obertan likes to get into positions B and C and prefers to pass than cross from there. This has always been my way of thinking and I like what he is trying to do. I have not been a fan of crossing, well except when Becks is the one delivering it.

 FANTASTIC.

I do agree with your points though, and I must say I like the look of this lad, Fergie plucked him amongst the Bordeaux quality as the most unlikely of suitors and he's looking the part... Gouffran, Gourcuff, Saivet, all could have been more likely signed but nope, Fergie knows

Are you suggesting that Obertan > Gourcuff?

Yes he could do to improve his crossing - every winger in the world must get bored of that criticism. But in fairness, a few of his crosses tonight were crackers, and a gambling striker would have scored from them. We could and should have been up inside a minute if Macheda busts a gut, as he has to, to get on the perfectly placed and paced cross Obertan puts round the back of the defenders

How much did we get this guy for, a few million? Laughable transfer fee based on what we've seen so far.

He was definitely the best player we had tonight - he was pretty much running the game in the first half. He was wasteful at times granted (youngster who isn't called Wayne Rooney or Lionel Messi in final ball inconsistency shocker), but he showed tonight why Fergie expects big things of him.

Doesn't really connect with his team mates yet, but looks promising all right.

Really? I think the link he has with Evra (Not because they're French, though i'm sure that only helps) Had been entertaining in the cameos they make together.

True that, but I was thinking more about what he does infield, crossing, central midfield, strikers and what not. But yeah, seems to work great with Evra, but who wouldn't ;)

Had some good moments but then had moments of being incredibility wasteful. He does seem very quick which is good to see, something we lack at times.

Yup. The one major positive on an evening full of 'meh'.

Certainly...That point where he suddenly burst through 3 players and struck a left foot shot towards the corner was a real "oh, he can do that sort of thing can he?"...moment. I know we're all being fairly knee-jerk here, but from a summer of transfer 'meh's' and a fair few 'meh' performances, his surprising instant impact (ish) has been quite a boost....No sign of those 'psychological issues' yet, touch wood, fingers crossed etc etc

Yeah, he's got that glide you associate with really top class players. Smooth.

All the "how he runs comparissons" seem to have missed the obvious (and cliched) one - Henry. He has the same languid, loose armed glide that Monsieur Theirry has.

The most exciting thing, or certainly the most sensible thing, is that he seems to know already when to release it and when to run with it. He hardly gave the ball away last night, which is something young players often get stick for...the fact he's already got this down shows the potential is ripe right now. Nani should be shitting bricks..

There was that one moment last night, when you could hear Phelan/someone from the crowd telling him to get out wide, the ball came to him in the centre, and he ran by about 3 of the opposition players. Showed his turn of pace, and strength. That impressed me more than anything yesterday

That's what I like most about him. He almost never gives the ball away, which is amazing for a winger who plays so quickly and directly and enjoys taking people on.

The only time he seems lose the ball is an obligatory moment in each game where he somehow tackles himself into touch.

What I liked about him is that he wasn't very "nervous" or anything close to it, confident on the ball and he was trying things he rarely did in France

Did you watch him much in France?

Has he improved massively since then?

Maybe this back injury really was hindering him?

Feck knows but I'm mystified as to how he didn't get his game at Bordeaux

...and when, if ever, are we going to see these psychological problems?...and what are they exactly?..Is he just very self conscious about the size of his head?

I didn't watch a lot of him in comparison to other players because he wasn't played often due to injuries and his youth. In the matches I managed to catch, he didn't really caught my attention like last night, of course he wasn't perfect and there are still many improvements to expect but he has something about him.A confidence to take the ball and try things, he doesn't look shy.
I sort of expected him to deliver these good performances for United, but not this soon tbh.If he improves then he should really get more involved with the first team?.Like you I'm surprised Bordeaux didn't even fight to keep him as I thought he was gonna have a big future for them, him being better than the likes of Bellion,Gouffran and Sertic

Yeh it was. Everyone at the pub just looked at each other and went "fecking hell!" at that point. He has shown a lot of consistency in his play up until now, but that piece of play came from someone with a lot of talent.

nice marchi...nice..

I'd like to see him be given a role in every game from now, like Ronaldo was. Whether it be a 15/20 minute cameo in every game for the next 5-10 matches, or if he gets a starting role and plays 60 odd minutes.

Its quite odd rating the performace of a frenchman then waiting for his autograph after when he is just over 3 months older than me. I've got close mates with more age difference

The few times I saw him play on TV he was too indecisive. He would get the ball, run, look around, run again, try something clever, get tackled and lose the ball (like Nani can be) and looked greedy. He still has that potential for indecision now but since he is a small fish in a big pond his greed is diminishing and playing with better players is obviously helping him.
He did well last night generally and I look forward to seeing him develop into a kidney-headed regular.

Nicely put...

Obertan is hungry for more...

...or so he tells the Manchester Evening News. Every time he's quoted I can't help but like this kid.

Obertan is hungry for more

Gabriel Obertan is hoping for a Carling Cup hair of the dog to cure a European hangover. The 20-year-old French winger emerged from United's Champions League disappointment with more satisfaction than most. Sir Alex Ferguson's faith in his next generation wasn't rewarded against Besiktas as the young Reds flopped 1-0. But once again £3m Obertan's raw contribution stood out. His chance could come again next Tuesday night with the League Cup quarter-final tie against Tottenham at Old Trafford. Fergie kept faith with his kids all the way to Wembley and success in the final against Spurs last season. He is likely to be forced to stiffen the youthful ranks against Harry Redknapp's free-scoring side but Obertan looks set to get a reprieve.

"The Carling Cup is a good opportunity for players who haven't played much and I hope I can take it if I play next week against Tottenham," said Gabriel. "It was a disappointing night against Besiktas. I really wanted to put in a good performance. I wanted to score and to lay on an assist and be efficient. I think I will have another chance and I will take it. I just want to be in the squad every game. Even a few minutes on the pitch is a bonus. I want to do more. I have not scored yet. I have not made an assist. I have put in some good performances but they've only been short appearances when I came on as a substitute. I want to do more than that. I think I could do more. That's what I am wishing for. I want to score and lay on goals. That is my target."

Obertan was an unknown arrival from Bordeaux during the summer and spent four months after joining the Reds overcoming a back injury. Now he's closing in on full fitness. "I don't think I am fully match fit yet. I worked hard for four months and did weights and running. I think I will be 100 per cent very soon. I just need some more match rhythm. The more I play the more that will come. I just want some minutes to play."

Inevitably, being a right winger with a few tricks in his locker Obertan has drawn comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo. But the French youngster dismisses that extra pressure. "I am not Ronaldo's successor. I just try to be Gabriel Obertan," he added. "There is no comparison for now. I have only been here for six months and I cannot do what he did in that time."

He may be another Van Persie type - obviously talented 20 year old, but with some question marks, hence his transfer fee was around 3 million.
