Loved the Obertan magic on Ivanovic near the end!!!! He would have been great if he was coming through whilst Ronaldo was still here.. Seems like our lack of flair will make us anxious for him to be pushed through. To be fair to him though he seems very confident in his ability.

this thread needs a gif of his stepover-type move towards the end on the lefthand side of their penalty box, was knocked out for a corner. it was rad.

always cut in onto his right foot when on the left wing, noticed it today and against moscow

Shock horror, a right footed player cutting inside on the left. Where have we seen something like that before? Here's a clue, both Ronaldo and Messi do it as well. In fact, playing in an advanced right position, Messi absolutely loves cutting in onto his left after feinting the defender.

Didnt have much time to shine. But his build up play looked promising. Still need to see how much end product and goal threat he can produce. Im sure there will be more opportunities and we can evaluate his potential further.

I'm encouraged simply due to the fact that Fergie sent him on in the hope of changing one of the toughest and most important games of the season instead of the likes of Nani and Scholes. The belief in him is certainly there, and he's clearly got a fair amount of ability.

He didn't have much time to impress today, but he still showed signs of being a potentially class player.

I'll reserve judgement

We have yet to see him cross a ball. In fact we have yet to see much from him apart from the ability to run at the full back then pass the ball to someone else.

early days

It's early days for sure but the signs are there. Gonna be a star in my opinion.

How effective has that been though! Every time he's been on the pitch, things happen down his flank

I didn't think he should feature today, I didn't fancy him up against Chelsea away yet. But he looked the part, no doubt about that, during his short time on there

If Nani just did the thing you've underplayed there, he'd be twice the player

From his delivery on a corner it seems like he has a decent technique of striking the ball. He shouldn't have much problems crossing it from the flank, although personally i would prefer he run directly into the box or drive in a low cross.

Seen him whip in a good corner today. Then one poor one.

So you're right, we should reserve judgement, but theres nothing wrong with saying that what he has shown so far is good.

His corners looked good and his direct play and movement looked much better then what i've seen of Valencia this season, i would like to see him start from the off in our next league game

Exactly.

This whole "passing to another player" (on your own team) is actually quite a crucial part of playing football.

In one of the United magazines Fergie said that Giggs will be moved to the middle of the field later on this season. He said that he s currently playing there because it's early in the season and he s still "fresh"

This means that someone else will have to fill the left-wing slot and the choice is mainly between Obertan, Nani and Park.

What's great to see is how involved he's been straight away in all of his cameos.

I like Obertan from what I have seen so far, which is very very little. Presumably that's a good thing then. He has more pure skill than Ronaldo and Nani put together. What he did yesterday to go past their right back was sweet as. If he can work on his finishing I think he's going to be a real find.

Interview from manutd.com

Obertan: I'm ready for this test

United fans are good at recognising quality, and in Gabriel Obertan they see plenty of potential and promise. Speaking to ManUtd.com for the first time since joining from Bordeaux, the French winger discusses his love for the English game, reveals how he's settled at OT, and outlines his plans to become a first-team regular...

It must have been frustrating getting your big move then having to sit on the sidelines. Are you pleased to finally be playing now?
After four months of just waiting and resting, I’ve been really looking forward to starting my career as a Manchester United player. I wanted to feel part of the squad, part of the group, and be involved in the games. So I’m feeling really good right now.

Saying that, did the time out help you to settle in England?
I think there were definitely some positives to it, and even though I was frustrated at not playing I tried to look at it in a positive way. In my disappointment, there were good things I could take from it. I got to know everybody at the club, I could begin to understand how things work here and get settled in England.

What are your early impressions of the club?
Manchester United has made a huge impression on me already. I knew it was a big club, of course. Bordeaux is a big club in France, but you come here and it is totally different. This is a world class club and it’s a totally different organisation. The quality of the players is different as well. Here there are only international players. Everything is quicker and the quality of the football is unbelievable.

Did you see your move to United coming or was it a surprise?
I knew United were interested because Jim Ryan (head of youth development) came towatch me play four years ago. I knew there was interest there but I didn’t expect the move to happen so early in my career. But I felt ready for it, I knew I was ready for the challenge and the change in my life. It was like a new beginning for me and I am just glad to be here and have the opportunity to play for this great club.

What are the main footballing differences between England and France?
The quality at United is higher than I experienced in France. Also the amount of contact, there are a lot more physical challenges than in France, and the speed of the game – it’s so fast. It's much slower in France, where you have time to look for space around you or pick out a pass. Here, everything is in a rush, because if you don’t rush then you will be tackled and lose the ball.

You seem to have the right attributes to cope with that…
I’ve always liked English football. When I was in France I would watch English football every weekend. And I think you're right, for my qualities I believe this is the best league in Europe for me. I’m quite fast and I like to attack and be in one v one situations with defenders.

What was it like making your debut at Old Trafford? What was going through your mind as you were about to come on?
I felt proud to be here and glad to get my first real injury out of the way. Obviously I’d played in the Reserves and enjoyed playing against Barnsley in the cup, but stepping out at Old Trafford is something else because I’ve never played in a stadium like that before. I was so excited and just couldn’t way to play and get on the pitch. It felt like the first step. I was a bit nervous at first, but after five minutes it felt like I’d been playing here for three years or something. The fans really get behind you and it’s a great sensation.

The fans have taken to you really quickly, chanting your name at matches…
I am very proud of that. It gives you a huge push when you are playing and you hear people singing your name. It’s like you have other forces behind you. It’s also made me feel very welcome here, and if I hear the fans singing my name I just want to give them something back by playing well and keep working hard for them.

And what do you hope to achieve at United?
At first I just want to be part of the squad, be in the group that travels to all the games, and get a few minutes in each game to begin with. Then, if I keep working hard and show what I can do, I have ambition. So, why not aim to be a regular in the team? I might need a year to achieve that, but I hope I can do it.

We have yet to see him cross a ball.
No need. Rather than cross the ball, from a typically crossing position Obertan will instead beat the first defenderon the wing, then drive straight into the box. Where he will bamboozle a second man before playing a pass directly to the feet of a dangerously-placed teammate. Much better than crossing.

I would go so far as to say that Obertan > crossing.

Good interview.. Can't wait to see more of him in the coming weeks... I would like to see him play with the regulars more.. Ofcourse with the B team as well in the CC matche against Spurs coming up or the 2 CL matches we have left.. But I would much prefer to see him playing alongside the regulars.. I think that will kick him on further..

Hopefully Obertan will start the two remaining Champions League group games, the Carling Cup tie against Spurs and perhaps a few of the premiership matches before the new year. It's not clear to me whether he's worthy of a starting place for big games in the 2nd half of this season but he might be.

Very good early signs from Obertan, the most impressive being he seems to have a good footballing brain.

My only concern with him is playing in a 4-4-2 you have to be fairly disciplined in terms of your defensive duties and at this stage he doesn't seem to be.

If anyone's going to be criticised for being indirect and having poor movement it's Nani, not Valencia.

Hey i wont argue Nani is erratic but at least he tried forward balls, Valencia always looks back if he isnt in his 'knock the ball to the touchline and cross the ball' position, there was even a 1-2 at the box to play Anderson in and he opts to pass back to Carrick/Giggs

You know this whole 'knock the ball to the touchline and cross the ball' is actually quite a direct technique.

Being indirect isn't a problem for Valencia IMHO.

True but when's the last time his delivered a fed-x ball or even a decent assist from it? We haven't got the player for that type of play even if we did you would find him to be pretty wasteful...

I believe that's what wingers do when they have the ball in the wing, especially if that's their main attribute, they should sometimes cut into the center, true, but it's not always the best option when they have the ball since most of the times they would have to beat more than 2 rivals to get into a scoring position. I'm beggining to think most people here assume all wingers have to be like Ronaldo.

I also wonder why he passes it back for Neville to cross it, since Neville is a terrible crosser and O'shea has never produced a single goal from his crosses.

It must be said that he often has two rivals infront when he passes the ball back to the fullback (who is in great position to cross). Or what? Should he try a step over and cross it himself even if he ain't in the best position to do it and the fullback is?

Well Neville set up a goal from a cross against cska and oshea set one up against Sunderland and thats only the last couple of weeks

What the feck? Seriously, what the feck?

I think it is. I feel the one thing holding him back is his lack of variety. If he was a great crosser of the ball and did that everytime I don't think anyone would complain. But his crosses don't seem to have that loop to them, their either smashed in the general direction of the striker or dinked in the general area. If he could become a crosser in the league of an Ashley it would work much much better.

Even so IMO he needs to add some variety to his game. It's all very predictable. And while you'll never come away from a big game thinking how useless he was, he doesn't look like he'll ever stand out in them either. And I think he's better than that. With his pace he should be impacting games more.

But yes I do like that he's solid, quick and physically strong. He has a lot of things going for him too.

As for Obertan, there's something I like about him. There's something I 'feel' he has that our other wingers (apart from Giggsy when on form) don't. There's an ease when he's on the ball and his movement has impressed me. It's such a huge bonus when a winger has good movement.

'I got a feeling'
